Take it first, materially. The world grows better from century to century because God reigns supreme from gen- eration to generation. ‘There are pro- gress and improvement everywhere— in material conditions, in social rela- tion,s philantropic endeavor, in Chris- tian growth. ‘Take it first, materially. think of the time, and not far back in the years, when there were unknown all the present uses of steam and elec- tricity or mowing machines and sewing machines, of grist mills and saw mills, of railways and steamships, ot tele- graph and photograph, of telephone, and autophone, of post office and news- paper, of printing press and typewriting machine. A hundred years ago our citizen knew nothing of sanitary con- ditions. In 1867 the money in the United States was $20 per capita, to- day $36. Money in circulation then, $18 per capita, today, $21; national debt, then, $69; today $13. Think of the Siberian railway, 7,500 miles long. Say not that the former days were bet- ter than these days, materially.

Take it educationally. Compare this day, of public libraries, public schools, widely diffused knowledge, with the days of Magna Charta, when only three of of the twenty-six barons that signed that document could sign their names; of the time when the king of Northumbria gave 800 acres of land fora small history. It was not until 1796 that vaccination was known; not until 1846 that anaesthesia was in- troduced; not until some 20 years ago that there was a science that touched antiseptics and bacteriology. ‘The medical scierce is butone of the many sciences whose whole character has been lifted and whose whole sphere has been enlarged by the glad and glorious day of intelligent triumph.

Take it politically. There is about as much corruption in p.litics, but things are getting better even in this direction. Lecky tells us that Walpole, {the prime minister, bribed his govern- ment with a hundred thousand pounds. In the United States there is less loss of money under the present adminis- tration than under any president that has guided the destinies of that nation. Over 80 controverseries between ciy- ilixed powers have been settled by ar- bitration duiing the present century.

More and more the political conscience of the people is becoming a1oused for the resistance of wrong. More and more we are seeking to raisethe body politic from the low, Cisgraced air gen- erated by ward politicians into the pure translucent atmosphere of exalted citizenship.

Take it morally. How much lottery in the past, of which we do not hear thday; how little of the use of liquor as an article of commonsale. Once strong drink was used in the dedication of chiitches, ordination of ministers, services at funerals; but today these things have given away before the logic of sober reason and educated conscience. And regard for human love and respect for human rights have greatly increased with the evolution of the ages. Some 2,000 years ago our word love was unknown. Study today the hospitals for homeless orphans and deserted infants, for the poor, dumb, blind, insane, imbecile Thank God for the day when in theland the speak- er represents fifty institutions care for 6,000 deaf and dumb, 35 _ institutions minister to 2,500 blind, while rr insti- tutions watch tenderly over 2,0co idiots and imbeciles. London charit- able institutions spend annually $3,- 000,000. Such a day as our’s never dawned before upon women and children, from whose eye has gone out light, from whose cheek has faded bloom, from whose soul has banished hope.

Take it religiously. Never was there such growth, progress, culture, attainment, in connection with the Christian religion as today. It is re- markable how, in student life, how our young men, as never before are accepting Christ as Sovereign and Saviour, and the Word of God ‘as man- ual of devotion and oracle of faith.

BANNERMAN’S OPINION.

The liberal leader in the house of commons, Sir Henry Campbell-Ban- nerman, speaking at Glasgow on the attitude of the opposition towards the South African question, said it was for the government, who had allowed the war, to deal with what is left be-

hind. The members of the oposition, he added, were only onlookers and critics. The two conquered republics

must in some form become states of the British empire, and while the suc- ces of the army relieved them from anxiety, South African affairs still de- mand intense watchful interest. ‘The happiness of the Free State, Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman said, could best be effected by a return as near a_ pos- sible to the government it had before, so that the people might experience the least possible change. “There is only one royal road,” he continued, “toconfidence, and that is to gain it through confidence. The liberal party is strong enough to apply these liberal principles from which the power of the empire sprang. The two republics must be given those rights of self- government which gives life and vigor, as well as contentment and loyalty to the colonies. It would be impossible to find an enduring settlement in a tissue of limitations which would be a standing symbol of rejection. Ther? isno need, however, for a_ hasty set- tlement, as there will be a considerable period of military occupation.”
