One of the features of the hygenic exposi- tion at Berlin has been the offer of prizes to the authors of the best suggestion and plans for the preservation of health and safety in the construction of theatres. There were nine- teen competitors, and four have received prizes amounting to somewhat over $2,000.

CorrecTion.—By the exchange of the word ‘‘twenty” for ‘‘seventy,” the dimensions and power of the steamer ‘‘Summerside” were made to read seventy feet six inches broad in- stead of twenty-two feet six inches broad; aud twenty horse power instead of seventy horse power. Those who have a slight knowledge of printing can see directly how the mistake occurred.

Every young man (with few exceptions of slight importance) on reaching twenty, must go into the army. If he has a college degree or can pass a certain examination the period of service is limited to one year ; otherwice he is a soldier for five years.

The New York Times’ London despatch says the dissatisfaction expressed by the Conservativs Unions at the weakness of Northcote’s leadership has resulted in his proposed resignation. The reason assigned is ill health, but it has been apparent for months that the party requires a more active leader. He is evidently enfeebled,
and cannot stand the strain. session after session. The real reason is, no doubt, that he is becoming
conscious of his imcapacity to lead the party. The Conservatives are in a dil- emma as to where to find his sucvessor and an active private diecussion is proceeding as to the merit of Cross, Gibson, Churchill, Lord George Hamilton, and Stanhope. Churchill is the favorite in some quarters, but his chronic ill health is an objection. The same objection applies to Stanhope. Hamilton has no official training. Gibson has only a limited parliamentary experience. Mr. Cross is a weak debater, and a man of narrow intellect, but possessing parliamen- tary experience, and he well most likely be adopted as a last resource if Northcote is forced to retire,
A collision ogeurred at three o'clock on the 25th off Eddystone light, in the English Channel, between the French steamer ‘‘St. Germain,” bound from Havre for New York, andthe steamer ‘‘ Woodburn,” from the east by way of Suez Canal. The ‘‘ Wood- burn” sank immediately and eighteen of her crew were drowned, The ‘St. Germain” has arrived at Plymouth disabled, where she landed her passengers and those who were saved from the ‘‘Woodburn,” It was a fine starlight night and the sea was calm. The ‘‘Woodburn” was being towed; she was'struck on the starboard quarter. There _was no time to lower her boats and only eleven of the persons on board were saved. Those who were drowned were sucked into the water, caused by the sinking of the steamer, and became entangled in wreck- age. The ‘St. Germain’s” bow was com- pletely stove in and her fore compartment tilled with water. The greater portion of her passengers were transferred to the tug-boat Recovery The St, Germain had 462 pas- sengers on board, including fifty nuns on their way to Texas, and a crew of 122 persons. The captain of the St. Germain, finding that the water was pouring into the forehold with fearful rapidity, ordered a sail to be rigged over the damaged portion of the vessel, in order to check the rush of water and reduce the pressure on the bulk- heads, The officers of the St. Germain sighted the tug-boat Recovery, which was towing the Woodburn, at 2.30 a.m.) and vhorkyny se wes thy onty which t

| was necessary to clear. the St. Germain's | helm was parted in order that the steamer | might go under the tuy-boats sterr. They had no idea that there was arhip astern in tow. The St. Germain will go into dry dock for repairs. From the marks on her bows it is apparent that the St. Germain went right through the Woodburn, literally cutting that vessel in two. A _ panic en- sued on the St. Germain after the collision and her passengers insisted upon being transferred to the tug Recovery.

Suddenly at his home, Brudenell River, near Georgetown, on the 2nd inst., Mr. Peter McLaren, shipbuilder, aged 78.
Fer a period of nearly sixty years, he had been continuously engaged in adding to the mercantile marine of the Maritime Provinces. Having built several vessels at Brudenell, about the year 1836 he removed to Richibucto, where some cf the finest ships of that day were constructed by him for Mr, Jardine of that port Subsequently he returned to Georgetown, where he still maintained, up to the time of his death, the reputation of a faithful master builder.
