—The Patriot has changed ita ground. it now sees something in the tariff changes to commend, and asks that Mr. L. H Davies, M. P., shal] receive credit for it. The Patriot would have the Government condemned for that which the Government does wrong, and the Opposition praised for that which the Government does right The justice of the Patriot is peculiar. Admitting the Patriot’s claim Mr. Davies’ behalf, surely the Government are entitled to just a little bit of credit for accepting hie advice. Those “bloated manufacturers” and interested protection- ists are not, it appears, all powerful with the Gevernment. The Covernment is still open to conviction when the farmers’ rights and interests are represented by such a man as Mr. Davies. Great is Davies and the Government is his tool. This at least is the Patriot's implication.

He said ; The privilege does not apply to a case like the present, and the witness must answer all questions regarding this $1,000 which is the subject of the suit, but he is not bound to, and must not disclose any account of a depositor. The questions ‘and answers must be confined to the actual sum io dispute, which the complainant ia endeavoring to trace and ear mark in the defendant’s possession, The witness then answered the questions and the case pro- ceeded, and is now going on. SATOLLI AND THE LIQUOR TRAFFIC.
According to the New York Wor'd shbishop Corrigan has written a very important letter to the editor of the Wine and Spirit Gazette, in which he makes an authoritative statement with regard to the decision of Mgr. Satolli, effecting Roman
| Catholic liquor dealers.

The Archbishop’s letter was called for by an editorial recently published in the Gazette, which says of Mgr. Satolli’s de- claration: “Will it be enforced in the eities of the country? Fully two-thirds of the retail dealers of the country are Roman Catholics. Seme of theese are litr eral contributors to the church funds. We voice the sentiments of a large major- ity of the liquor dealers of this city and in Brooklyn in saying : We dare Archbishop Corrigan to enforce in letter and in spirit the decree against the liquor traffic just issued by Mgr. Satolli, the papal delegate.”
The Archbishop’s letter is in his own handwriting. In it he says: “I reply to your expressed wish. I have the honor to say that I loyally accept the principles laid down by Mgr. Satolli, both in their regard to the letter and spirit. More than this, no Catholic can refuse to accept them. Please remember, however, that acceptance of principles is not to be con- founded with the blind application of the same on all occasions and under all cir- cumstances. Signed, M. A. Corrigan.”
The editor of the Gazette, P. J. Smith, bas this to say about the Archbishop’s letter:
“The answer does not entirely meet the issue. It is nota question of accepting « principle laid down by the head of the church, but of the courage to carry out in letter and in spirit the principle just proclaimed in the face of seemingly ad- verse public sentiment. The is: ‘Will the Archbishop give orders fuse admission to Roman Catholic ies to anyone engaged either as principal or agent in the manufacture or sale of in- toxieating liquors, and will he in-truct the clergy to deny the rights and privileges ot the church to liquor dealers who sell on Sunday? The declaration of the Arch- bishop seems to justify the conclusion that, in the discharge of hie duty, he will enforce these principles, although he dues not say so in his letter in distinct terme. Future developments will show how far this conclusion is justified.”

THE DROWNING AT MOUNT STEWART
Some Additional Particulars of Mr. Gor- man's Courageous Act,
Your information in regard to the sad drowning of Miss McLean at this place on Mondav last was slightly inaccurate where it stated that Mr. James Gorman had hold of the girl in the water and was after- wards obliged to let her go
The facta are: Mr. Gorman. who so gallantly rieked his life to save the little girl, was, at the time ehe fell into the river, at work in his forge about two hun- dred yards from the scene of the accident. On hearing the screams of her little com- panion for help, he quickly ran to the spot, and, having no time to divest him- self of his clothing (not even his boots), sprang pluckily into the swift- running current. As might be expected he at first sank to the bottom and on com- ing again to the surface saw the unfortu- nate girl sinking for the last time. He then made a determined effort to reach her and had he been a few seconds sooner in the water would no doubt have succeeded in saving her. But the cruel waters clos- ed above and she sank beyond the reach of human aid. :
The tide being then running out very strongly and being heavily loaded down by the weight of his clothing, it was, with great ditliculty he reached the shore him- sclf in safety.
Mr. Gorman deserves special praise for his plucky and heroic effort to save the little girl’s life and in sodoing ran a nar- row chance of losing his own.
Such acts of heroism should not pass unrewarded. Medals have before now been given for less deserving acts of bravery.

Information has been received in Lon- don which leaves no room for doubt that the Wellman Arctic exploring party is safe. Carl Siewera, the Norwegian arctic enthusiast, received a telegram from the Erling, a Norwegian sealer to-day, at the island of Tromsoe, Finmark, Norway. The captain of the sealer said in his de- spatch, that near Amsterdam island, the Erling spoke the Ragnvald Jarl, the | steamer which conveyed the Wellman or American arctic expedition tothe edge of the pack ice. The expedition Ragnvald Jarl in reply to signals asked to be report- ed st the nearest place the Erling touched at, saying thatall was wellon board. The signal from the Ragnvald Jarl was: “Please report nearest touching place. All well on board the Ragnvald Jarl and full of hope.” The Ragnvald Jar), the captain of the Erling telegraphed, had been beset by pack ice which had delayed her pro- gress considerably, but, the sealer captain added, Wellman and hiv party were then free of pack ice. and they should now be weil on their way to the north pole.

Father Burke Explains His Action on the Occasion.

During the hearing of the case of Mac- donald vs. Father Burke, Dr. Murphy and W. P. Reid, yesterday. the court was crowded to the doora and the greatest in- terest was manifested by the people who mgke the case their own.
Attorney-General Peters appeared for the defendants and pleaded want of juris- diction of the court and full justification of the action of the defeuce. The court allowed Lawyer Thomas, of Moncton, to appear for Macdonald.
On the stand, Father Burke explained his action in the matter. He was satisfied of the presence of the itinerant whiskey peddler, and was satisfied, upon advice,
that the worst results would be brought about by the sale of the liquor. He laid information for a search
warrant with a magistrate, and was told to proceed to take possession of the liquor. In the face of threats of violence he and the other co-defendants went to the place, forced open the door and secured the whiskey, and nothing else being possible in the exigency to save baneful results, they broke it upon the street,
The law makes no provision for such cases, but the Attorney-General pleaded that sections 27 and 44 of the code, taken in connection with other sections, justified
