litit Luncii Program For Rural Schools

Several schools in the Pro- vince are taking part in the Red Cross Nutrition education project tilts year. Since its organization last April Red Cross Nutrition Services has been carrying out a moat. effective program,

The Red Cross Nutritionist. the Director of Education. the School Supervisors and the Red Cross Nutrition Committee working to- gether evolved o plan in which three schools were ‘- in each Wllllty. where a school lunch pro- gram could be organized and the establishment of good eating hab- its encouraged through nutrition flit-IMHO". as a part of the health and other school courses. The De- partment of Education also sup- ports this view,

The Nutritionist, Miss .1, E5. telle Halnes. visits eac-ii of these schools one day every third week. hel-ping with problems. bringing ideas. and reports of progress from other schools and providing any other service possible.

Much has already been accom- plished in establishing those good health habits that assure better health, better work. and more happiness by working with chil- dren.

Owing to the difficulty tn pro- curing the necessary ecluipment, a few of the project schools have lint as yet got a lunch program underway. In almost all cases the Jr. Red Cross Branch has un- dertaken the organization of the branch project in the school. The co-opcration of the Women's In- stitutes, the trustees and the parents contribute to t-hc success of the plan.

At Union, New Perth. Lower Montague and Greenvale, cocoa, a variety of soups, and vegetables served on toast have found their place on the menus. Baked beans. stews, and many other interest- ing dishes have been suggested as future possibilities.

The manner in which the chil- dren in these schools under theii uvn direction organize their hand- trashing, the serving and eating of their noon-meals. washing the dishes and tidying the class-room form a sharp contrast to the hurried disorganized lunch period common in many of our rural schools today.

The equipment used and the type of service and quantity of food may vary greatly but two basic principles should br- the same for every lunch room.

First that t-he child receive an adequate lunch in supply at least one third of the day's require- merit.

And. second. that the child not only receive food. but also that he gain in knowledge through the school lunch program.

Food in sufficont amount. and of a certain quality is necessary for the growth and physical dc- velopment. of the child.

These should be the goals in all lunchrooms, and the alert lunch- room manager will continually he seeking ways to measure her suc- cess.

In connection with this Inlnch liian a meeting of the teachers concerned was held at the Red Cross Rouse, Charlottetown. op Saturday. January 4th. at 9 a. m.. when the following program under the direction of Miss Haines was discussed. '

1. How can the lunch program be run most smoothly?

2. Are all children getting good lunches at noon?

3. Can part of the noon meal be prepared in the average rural school?

4. How can nutrition teaching be part of the school program?

5. How can the community be encouraged _to take part in the lunch program?
