folks starting out in the Great World should have this feeling in order that later they may learn how little they do know. That feeling is called self-confidence. Those having it usually get along faster than those who do not have it

Young Toad

Young Toad was born in the Smiling Pool. of course. That is where all our Toads are born. He was very tiny when he left. the Smiling Pool. He was born in the spring. He had a long tail then and. no legs and he was called Tadpole by some, and Poilywog by others. Baby Frogs are also called Tadpoles and Poliywogs.

Then he was more like a queer fish, but he soon grew legs and his tail grew shorter and shorter until he had no tailllctt. It was then that he started out in the Great World, turning his back on the Smiling Pool and going hop- hop-hippity-liop he knew not where. When jolly. round. bright Mr. Sun was shining Young Toad kept under leaves or grass or anything else he could crawl un- der. You see he connot stand having his skin dry out. When the dew at night made every- thing d-amip. tiny Young Toad moved on. He travelled on rainy days too.

So at long last he reached Farmer Brown's garden. There he decided to shay. There were other Toads living there among them Old Mr. Toad. who had lived there more years than he could remem- ber. Young Toad admired Old Mr. Toad and tried to do the things that Old Mr. Toad did. In that way he learned fast the many things that Toads should know. He had grown fast, but he was still a. small Toad. When he saw Old Ml”. Toad dig in and bury himself for the winter Young Toad did the same thing. Without knowing why, he dug deeply and there he slept all winter. When he came out in the spring he was a. year old. He saw Old Mr. Toad making ready to leave Farmer Brown's garden.

”Where are you going?” asked

Young Toad. "To meet Old Mrs. Toad at the Smiling Pool. as I do every

spring." replied Old' Mr. Toad, and off he went hop-hop-hipcpity -hop.

For some reason. he didn't know just why. Young Toad didn't want: to go bapk to the Smiling Pool. He was quite content to stay in Farmer Brown's garden. He was still there when Old Mr. Toad returned in, the middle of the slimmer. From then on they

were fast friends and Young Toad followed Old Mr. Toad about learning from him what not to do where not to go. It was from him that he learned of whom to be afraid and of whomi not to be Ifraid.

Now in his second year, Young Toad felt there was very little more for him to learn. So far he had had no very great adventure and he had begun to think that there really was no one of whom he need be in great tear. Perhaps when you have been greatly fright- ened you have felt the perspir- ation break out all over you. Something like that happens with a Toad. and this is a form of protection for it is very disagree- able to an enemy who may pick up a. Toad in his mouth. Flip the Terrier had once picked up Young Toad. and had dropped. him in I

Two of the most favored teams locked horns on this board. When first played, South opeifed with one cluib and eventually landed at three notrump doubled. West led a heart, and. since the doc- larer made the wrong guess for the club queen, the penalty should have been 800 points. East-West however made hash of the defense. and the actual outcome was only a one-trick defeat. South's opening bid at this table was certainly light, and whatever calamity befell him was of his own doing.
