the short-lived Derby Ministry. When again in Opposition, he came to the front as one of the ablest assailants of the Derby-Diaraeli Government. Oa the

accession of the Gladstone Ministry, he ba- eame Chancellor of the Exchequer, and bore a leading part in the promotion and defence of all the Liberal measures of that period. He was subsequently elevated to the peerage. He married first in 1836 and again in 1885, after he had attained te the ripe age of seventy-four years. As us- ual, his name was not often mentioned after he entered the House of Lords.

Our Manufactures.

Tue Opposition Party would not admit that any mistake could have been made by the census enumerators in respect to the population of Canada, They ure, conse- quently, barred from taking the position that any mistake has been made by the enumerators in respect to its manufacturing industries. This being so, they must per- force admit that there has been, in the past ten years, an immense and a wonderfu) addition to the Canadian output of manu- factured goods. Some of the figures of the census returns are presented in thisday’sissue of Taz Examiner By reference to them it will be seen that within the decade there has been in some towns an increase in the output cf manufactured products from nothing to upwards of a million and a half of dollars worth. In other towns the out- put has been more than doubled. In al- most all there has been a substantial in- crease. Montreal, Toronto, St. John, Halifax, all our more important towns, exhibit marked improvement in respect to manufacturing activity. This marked improvement could not possibly have come hand.in-hand with the ruin and decay which the opposition party assured the country would result from the operation of the National Policy. The country has

been and is, upon the whole, prosperous. A great deal of money has been invested in manufactures in cons: quence of the advan- tages to homeindustries which the National Policy affords Makiog full allowance for failures here and there—resulting for the most part from extravagance and mis- management——-we may say that the results have been in « high degree satisfactory.

Dairying the Specialty for P. E. Island.

Tue undoubted success of the Dominion dairy station at Three Rivers proves be- yond a doubt that we have found the spe- cial line of industry for which our Island is best adapted. While the Northwest pro- duces grain, California fruit, the Scuthern States cotton, Nebraska and Kansas corn and pork, China and Japan tea and silk, and Newfoundland codfish, we can make cheese and butter of a quality that com- pres favorably with the best from dairy districts in any part of the world.

The advantage of this business is that a small outlay for milch cows at the begin- ning gives an almost immediate return. The farm also begins to be more fertile from the first day. The experience of Ia- jand cattle men is that two years of pas- turage leaves a field very much improved. Then there is no danger of overstocking the market withsuch a class of dairy goods as the factory system enables us to make. The parts of the world which are adapted for this industry are of very small extent, and but little of them are inhabited by people fitted by either nature or training for dairy farmers. Odaly a few races of mankiod ean do anything with milkcows. Fortunately, our Island is inhabited by representatives of the most successful dairy nations.

The conditions, then, being all in our favor, may we not confidently expect a great and wide-spreading interest among our people in that excellent creature, the milk cow. The result of this season's oper- ations among the Three Rivers’ farmers tells them that they have many very good milk cows, and by a wise use of bulls of improved breeds their herds can in a few years be developed to the utmost ex- tent of usefulness.

Young men who are looking for a calling should rot neglect examining the advan- tages they can derive from taking a few mouths’ course of instruction and training at ihe dairy station. Next season pro- bably a dozen or more cheese manufac- turers will be required to take charge of che new establishments which are certain to be started here next June. The posi-

tions are first-class in every way. A cheese manufacturer is at least as important a per- son as 4 railway conductor, and the psy is as good as that of either a conductor or en- gineer, with the advantage of permanent residence. The capital required for the building and plant will be a sure invest- ment, with three times the interest now obtained from the banks. No matter how we lock at this new departure, there are grand results in view.

Memorial Service.

A Vancouver paper reports :—‘‘A special memorial service was held in Mount Pleas- ant Baptist Church with reference to the death of the late Jacob Benjamin Docken- doft. The edifice was crowded to its utmost capacity, the Mount Pleasant Lodge 1. VU. VU. F., of which Mr. Dockendotf was a mem- ber, attending ina body. At 7 o'clock, while marching into the church, the hymn, ‘Solemn Strikes the Funeral Chime,” from the funeral service of the order, was sung, after which all! j>ined in singing :

Are like an evening gone. Portions of Scripture were read from John xiv, and 1 Thess. iv. Fervent prayer was offered fur the bereaved widow and friends. The hymn, ‘Forever With the Lord,” was sung, and the choir rendered touchingly,

Pastor Banton preached on appropriate sermon from the words, ** Bat I would not have you _to be ignorant, brethren,concern- ing them that fall asleep; that ye sorrow not, even as the rest, which have no hope.” (1 Thess. iv. 13, R V.) The three leading points in the sermon were : (1) Concerning them that sleep; (2 ) concerning them that weep; (3.) concerning the rest; the first, endeavoring to show the blessedness of those who die in the Lord; the second, comforting those who weep: the third, warning those without hops. At the close Mr. and Mrs. Banton sang with great feel- ing the beautiful hymn, ‘* The Morning Land.” The coagregation joined in sing- ing ** Asleep in Jesus,” and the benedic- tion was pronounced. The Oddfellows withdrew in order, and the large congrega- tion dispersed.

As neither the President nor the First Vice President of the Caledonian Club has made an explanation to the public as to Mr. Me- Phee’s resignation, as requested by a corres- pondent inour issue of Wednesday last, Mr. McPhee desires to state that he will give his reasons for resigning in THe EXAMINER of Wednesday next.

Mr. Mercier denies that he is sick as stated by the papers In conversation from Tourouver over the _ telephone, he said: ‘* Sick, no indeed. I never felt better. Why, for the past two days I have been working like a Trojan getting in my hay crop, and the exertion, though severe, has not affected me. 1 am all right.”" The ex-Premier, however, it is understood, is taking extremely good care of himself during the hot weather.

Harrax, July 28.—Captain Hamilton and cfticers of the flagship Blake, gave an ‘tat home” and dance on board tonight. The ship was gorgeously decorated. ‘The weather was perfect. The youth and beauty of Halifax and many visiting Am- ericans were present. After visiting Char- lottetown the Blake will return to Ialifax, and after a“week's stay will sail for Quebec Qa her return from Quebec she will remain until she leaves for the Weat Indies for the winter. j

The Pylsdes, when she returns here, will sail soon after for the West Indies to re lieve the Tartar, which will coms to Hali- fax.

The Canada will goto the West Indies to relieve the Tourmaline, which comes to Halifax to await the arrival of the Spartan, which comes direct from England.

Merprorp, Mass., July 28.—Blanche Bar- rows, aged 4, daughter of William K, Bar- rows; Roland Cushing, aged 5, son of Walter PF, Cushing; Eddie Rendall, aged 5, son of K. P. Randall; Albert Lewis, aged 6, son of T. A. Lewis, m'‘ssing since 1l a. m., were found in a closet under a sink in a new house in process of construction, where they had crawled some time during the day. The door shut in some way, snapping the catch and making them prisoners. Ihe three boys died from suffocation, and the little girl was slow- ly sinking, but alive.

Hauirax, July 28.—Rev. G. J.. Bond, brother of Colonial Secretary Bond, tele- graphed the authorities at St. Jolin’s re- garding the startling statements made in Halifax by Capt. Hopkins, who took down a cargo of iood stuffs for the relief of the victims. Mr. Bond to-night received the following cablegram from the editor of the Royal Gazette :

There was no call by the relief committee for voluntary labor iu usloading the relief steamer Havana, as it was felt that in the de- moralization of the labor market, through the fire, it would be much better to give employ- ment to those needing relief than to give relief without labor. This action of the committee has been misconstrued, and has given rise to these damaging reports. The committee desire to encourage a spirit of self-reliance amongst the distressed people, and are glad to have an opporianity of giving any enploy- ment that will save them from the demoral- ization of tree distribution of material or money. Since the night of the fire there has been a perfect absence of any attempt at pil- fering or looting. Al!l the reports about in- cendiariem started from the fact that one woman, half-demented, tiied to set fire to her house,

Hopewe tt, July 28.—The new Egerton gold mining company has recently made another rich find at Fifteen Mile stream, (Pictou County, N.8,) A two inch lead of good paying ore has been struck fifteen feet from the surface, and a yield of ten ounces was given for the first ton of quartz crushed. This is the best paying lead that has yet been tested in this gold region, and it looks as if miners were only beginning to find out the wealth that is stored away in this isolated region.

ANNAPOLIS, July 28.—EKarly last week, while De. Primrose, of Lawrencetown, was driving on a lonely road in East Dalhousie, he was held up by a couple of. colored high- waymen, who demanded money. The doc- tor, whois a powerful man and a handy one, was bundled up and asked to be al- lowed to alight in order to get at his poc- kets. The robbers were willing enough for him to do this, but they made a mts- take, for the doctor, as soon as he got his feet on terra firma, proceeded tu knock both the villians down, and then got into his carriage and drove off. The meu were evidently green in the business and made a sad mistake in their man.

Curcaco, Ill., July 26.—This hot spell‘is longer than any term of 90° weather Chi- cago has had for many «. year, and the longer it lasts the more destructive it be- comes In July, 1887, there were three days of just such weather, and over one hundred psople died of sunstroke. The fatalities thus far are alarming, and there is no reason to believe that death will not cut as broad a swath this time as it did then, although the thermometer has not reached sohigha pointas it did five yearsago. Up to noon nine deaths had been reported from eunstroke. Joseph Walsh, Thomas Harrison and John Kehoe, laborers, succumb- ed to the sun god. Mrs, Mary Armstrong, 70 years old, died this morning, and Thomas Harrison, 78 years old, gasped his life awa at noon. Among the fatalities are five chil dren, all under 6 months. The heat was so great in the furnace room of the Great North- ern hotel that fireman James Kirk was over- come. Mrs. Pauline Biggs was prostrated in Justice Keisteri’s court room. Adam Smith, a teamster, fell from his waggon; J oseph Turner, a pedlar, was overcome; and Miss Jennie Jamison became a victim while shop- ping. Over 100 cases of heat prostration were reported to the police, the majority of which will recover. Many cases of prostration never come to the knowledge of the authori- ties until death resulta, and physicians say there are hundreds of people in Chicago con fined to their homes by the excessive heat. Laborers on the street were overcome, and the men on the docks suffered the most ctf all. Dead horses, stricken by the heat, and dead dogs, killed through fear that hydrrophobia exciting weather might make them a menace to human life, lay here and there all over the city, the extreme mortality having evertaxed the dead animal bureau and contractors.
