N and after Tuesday, May 13th, the new steamer ‘Heather Belle,’”’ Hugh McLean, master, will run as follows :—

Every Tuesday morning, at four o'clock, will leave Charlottetown for Orwell Brush Wharf; leaving Orwell Brush Wharf at seven a. m., for Charlottetown, calling at China Point and Halliday’s Wharves; leaving Charlottetown, at three p. m., for Haliday’s, China Point and Brus Wharves, where she will remain over night.

The delegates were received with every attention at Washington, where all the

Questions concern- ing the working of the order, said Mr. Underhay, will be submitted to all the sub- ordinate lodges in each Province and State, for discussion and their decisions, will be returned to their respective Grand Lodges, and by this means the Grand Lodge, when in session, will have before it the opinions of exch subordinate lodge on these various matters and be able to reach more satisfactory results. It is also stated this will create in each lodge a greater interest in the work in hand, as each individual member will feel that he has an influence on the action of the super- ior body. A small money grant was made for the assistance of the brethren in Maine, in fighting the proposed modification of the Maine liquor law, as it was considered very necessary to avoid defeat in that State. It was especially desirabie as Maine wes the first State to adopt a prohibitory law. It has been said that the Maine law is a fai- lure, remarked the speaker, but 1 can assure you it is anything but a failure. The State has its detectives placed everywhere—some of them in the lumber woods even, in the guise of workmen, for the purpose of fer- reting out any illicit trade that might exist there. Prince Edward Island has adopted the Canada Temperance Act—the vote in St. John, though a defeat might be looked upon as a moral victory; when the question ix again tested the act will be carried bya handsome majority, It is always harder to carry these acts in large cities than in the rural districts, but when carried where they are easier to enforce. Mr. U. expressed his regret for the absence ef Mr. Chisholm, and thanked the Good Templars for their many kindnessess.

Mr. Underhay continued his remarks to considerable length, and at the close was laudly applauded.

J. R. Pidgeon, G. W. C. T., made a brief address, thanking Mr. Underhay and Mr. Chisholm for the manner in which they had advocated the interests of the order in New Brunswick at the R. W. G. L., and hoped that the time was not distant when the order here would be in a position to reciprocate.

attend to private affairs connected with the estate of his late father.

Investigation is being made of the alleged bribery case in the Massachusets legislature. It is said $5,000 a piece was paid for several votes im the defeat of the water gas bill.

A young man named Randolph committed suicide by hanging himself to a small tree in the bushes near Paradise, Annapolis County, N.S., on Surday morning. When found he had been dead for some time. The will of the late Samuel W. Sweet, of Jamaica Plains, distributes $240,000 to a number of local charitable and religious in- stitutions, including $60,000 to the Massa- chuseits general hospital and $10,000 to the Harvard medical school. The residue of the estate, which is estimated at $500, - 000 is to be divided equally between the American board of foreign missions and the Massachusetts home missionary society. The American board also gets $10,000.

Some days ago the Government steamer Canadian ran into and sank a brig in Gaspe Harbor. The brig, which was owned by « local fishery firm, wasat anchor when the collision occurred. An investigation was held by Capt. Scott, R. N., when it was shown that the steamér was altogether to blame, Consequently the sailing master of the Canadian has been dismissed and the sailing master of the Druid appointed in his stead, It is probable the owners of the brig will bring an action against the Government to recover the value of their vessel.

. Atthe meeting of the Synod of the Ke- formed Presbyterian Church, at Pittsburg, Pa., on the 26th May, the report of a com- mittee condemning the liquor traffic licens- ed by government and providing for the excommunication of such church members as deal in spirituous liquors and rent pro- perty to tavern keepers, was after a heated debate unanimously adopted. The Chicago Tribune voices western public opinion as well as public sentiment in Canada when it says :—‘‘The treaty con- ditions between the United States and Canada bearing upon the extradition of criminals are grossly defective. Nothing but indifference and neglect upon the part of the United States authorities seems to stand in the way of their improvement. The Canadian Government is re- presented as willing and ready to agree upon a scheme of extradition which shall provide for the return of persons ac- cused of embezzlement, swindling and otber offences not included in the existing arrangement. Canada is probably dis- gusted at being the Botany Bay for the de- taulters and confidence-men of the United States. Extradicion between the two coun- tries ought to be~placed upon precisely the same footing as between the several States.”

The general assembly of the Presby- terian church met in St. James square church, foronto, on the 4th inst. The opening sermon by Dr. Cochrane was a brief and pointed description of the wants and hopes of the church. The want of the church was not so muck. speciel reason of revival as the steady quiet work of God’s spirit. The reson why the church does not enjoy this continually is that the members do not prize the ordinances of religion as highly as they ought. But God has prom- ised ylorious things to His church, The preacher closed with an earnest appeal to his brethern to strive after greater personal holiness, 2s one of the importent causes of ministerial success.
