Seeing and Believing.
It is an old and a wise saying that ‘‘see- ing is believing,’’ yet everybody knows that very often what we see and therefore believe proves to be not really true at all. As we grow older, finding that qur eyes have so frequently deceived us, we are of- ten not satisfied with the evidence they give us until we have verified it by touch or smell or hearing or taste, or by looking at some doubtful thing from different points of view or under a different light- ing.
We are not willing to believe that a con- jurer actually draws rabbits from a man’s ear or coins from the tip of his nose just because our eyes tell us such tales. Some- times our deceptions are so lasting that things must be made wrong in order to look right, which seems rather contradic- tory. If we look at the letter § or the fig- ure 8 as carefully as we can, the upper and lower halves seem to be almost exactly the same size. If we turn them upside down, thus, s, 9, the difference in the size of the loops is quite astonishing, and we wonder how we could have been so mistaken. Taken in connection with a recent statement of Professor Oliver J. Lodge we can well believe that the lighting system of the future will be little short of marvelous as far as the generation of the light is concerned. Professor Lodge, who isthe head of the department of experimental physics in University col- lege, Liverpool, says that ‘‘if mechan- ical energy can be converted entirely into light alone, one man turning the crank of a suitable machine could gen- erate enough light for a whole city.’’ Puluj claims that his lamp fulfills this condition, and he is working hard to bring it down to a practical basis.
To produce light without heat is to perfect a system in which all of the pro- ducing energy will be turned into light. As our electric lighting system now ex- ists only from 1 to 3 per cent of the encrgy is expended in light. The rest of it passes off in the form of heat. It is this imumeuse waste of. energy which makes it necessary for us to employ steam engines, dynamos and expense creating apparatus of all kinds in pro- ducing what is after all but a mere re- siduuim of illumination.
Puluj’s lamp is not operated by dy- namos or storage batteries. It operates with a different kind of electric cur- rent. It is lighted by means of an in- duction coil or a glass plate electric
as lightning. The lamp of Puluj can be operated even though only one terminal of the induction coil (the negative pole, for instance) is connected to it. The lamp itself is shaped very much the same as an ordinary Edison incandes- cent lamp, except that the wires lead- ing into the lamp do not extend up the neck from a socket. They extend di- rectly through the side of the bulb. They are made of aluminium. The neg- ative pole, or cathode, ends in a small reflector shaped disk. Hanging from the point, or apex, of the lamp globe is a small square sheet of mica. The piece of mica faces the reflector disk or negative pole and is painted with sulphide of calcium, an extremely phosphorescent substance. When the negative pole of the lamp is connected with an induc- tion coil, the current is, as it were, con- centrated by the little disk in the lamp and a stream of radiant electricity flows
This is Puluj’s lamp as it exists to- day. The heat evolved from it is so small that it can be neglected. Nearly all of the energy put into it is convert- ed into light. Itis therefore the nearest possible approach to cold light that has yet been made. But it is not in its pres- ent stage available for general lighting purposes. Puluj is experimenting with a view to arriving at a solution of his problem. He is carrying on a series of investigations to the end of producing a chemical lighting system. Not the pro- duction of light through the consump- tion of chemicals, but, as far as can be ledrned, the development of ethereal
