—MRS. DAVID BOYLES - The furlersl service for the late Mrs. David Boyles of West Devon was held from her late residence on May 28th. There was a short ser- vice at her home conducted by Rev. C. O. f-lowlett who was as’ sisted by Rev. W. G. Dickson, end then the service was held in the West Devon United Church. the Minister. Rev. W. G. Dickson was chairman and the message was brought by Rev. C. O. Hewlett There was a very large turnout of friends and neighbors and loved ones mm had gathered to pay their last respects to one who was so universally liked. Rev. Mr. How- lett spoke about the fact that Mrs. Boyle: was a great sufferer, she was blind and almost ccmpletely deaf. yet she was possessed of great fortitude and courage and her strength was always in the old Rock of Ages. she was a gocd wife and a faithful mother, and she will be missed in the Com- munity. ‘Iihe choir with Mrs. Charles Mar earl as organist. rendered the sip cial hymns of the deceased. Interment was ln the family plot of the West Devon Baptist cemetery-O

Recital Ami Concert At Long illvsr

-A packed house - greeted the pupils of Miss Frances Wells-and other performers at 14m: River Hall on Wednesday evening. June ma. when s. combined recital and variety concert sponsored by Mar- gate. Irishtcwn. long River and Park Corner Women's Institutes was staged before an appreciative audience. Through the efforts of Mrs. Harold Laird interest was a- roused in the obvious need for early musical training among our young people. The result was the organi- zation of a music project. spon- sored by s music club on behalf of Kensirlgion High School and eleven W. I. groups an behalf of rural schools. All accomplished musician. Miss Frances Wells, who is a graduate of Mt. Allison Uni- versity was engaged to leach th" rudiments of vocal music in the schools.

The venture was one previously

untried here, and there were many obstacles. One was tile problem o! transportation which proved espec- ially difiieuit, due in part to the extreme weather conditions exper- ienced in the winter oi’ i948. The question of an adequate salary made it necessary to include so many schools as the dcparunent of education makes no provision for the teaching of music -and the entire amount had to be made up by the Women's Institute and by a music club organized M. Ken- sington. However Miss Wells not only undertook the task of teach- ing vocal music in the schools. but fulfilled io the best of her ability, the great need for a teacher in piano, by taking up to sixty pup- ils. in various parts of the di ict. Even so. many would-be pupils were disappointed. The work was begun in Septem- ber of 1947. and in spite of bad weather and road conditions. and the fact that only one lesson a week could be given at best. Wed- ilesdsys recital. by pupils who had in most cases received no previous training. clearly showed what could be accomplished by regular train- ing, given as Miss Wells said in her remarks. e1: least twice a week. A grant from the government to supplement local funds. would make it possible to divide this dis- trict of 12 schools into smaller groups, with more than one teach- er. but without such financial ss- sistancc. the Institutes. and the Music Club at Kenslngton have made an auspicious beginning. Re- citals are being held in other parts of the district and if all pupils have grasped this opportunity. aa did those performing at Long Riv- er, the experiment has been well worth while. ' ‘ During the evening, Miss Wells gave a constructive talk on the project, designed to assist its fut- lire development, although, to the great-regret of her pupils, Miss Wells will not be returning after vacation. '

Mr. William E. Jolmstone presid- ed while the following program was carried out. Each number re- ceived wholeheartcd applause and in many numbers, an encore was demanded.

GOOD SURFACE NEEDED

Before paint is applied to an in- terior or exterior, make sure the surface is thoroughly dry and clean. If the old surface has a gloss, use fine sandpaper’ on it so the new coating can find a ‘toe hold."

Scrape off loose or cracked old paint and hammer down any nails that may be sticking out. Nail holes and cracks should ‘be filled with putty but only after the first new cost has been applied! _.

An old wax and polish must removed. With practically all fur- niture, first turn it upside down and paint the legs. Then place it right aide up and do the top and sides.

Be sure to allow each dost to dry thoroughly before applying the next.
