THe A BORIGINAL AMERICANS.—The Amer- rique Indians, who were visited not long

go by Mr. J. Crawford, State Geologist of Nicaragua, occupy a hilly region of the rich gold mining section of La Libertadt, Nicaragua. These Indians are 6 feet 6 inches to6 feet 8 inches tall, active and apparently strong and healthy. They are dying out rapidly, however, and are now estimated to number not more than 275 or 300 individuals. They live in pathiess forests, and their chief occupation is to tap certain trees for rubber, which they carry on their backs to traders 100 miles away They have cleared some ground for corn, planting this in heles made with pointed sticks. A few lamps of melted gold are found among them, anj it is inferred that the Indians cf this locality mined and melted this metal before the discovery of Nicaragua by Columbus. They believe in a mighty prophet, who appeared in their territory in very ancient times, and whose form has been seen on a mountain top by some of the older Indians.

Miuitary Pigrons.—Since the success of the carrier pryeon service during the seige of Paris in 1870 71, European governments have given considerable attention to the rearing aud training of pigeons. In France, according to Lieut. Col. Da Rochas, most of the fortresses now contain dove-cots, end 47 depaitments have private svucieties for pigeon-training, the total number of trained pigeons in the country being about 100,- 000, and Paris alone hasing 8,000 trained and 10,000 untrained pigeons. In Ger- many there are about 20 military pigeon stations, and in 1888 there were 73 private societies with 52,24) carrier pigeons. In Italy there sre dove-cotes at 23 military stations.
