Results of Confederation.

We depreeate, as useless and merely vexatious, the efforts of certain journals and persons to make the people of this Island disloyal to the Confederated Domin- ion of Canada. For better for worse, for richer for poorer, our destiny is linked with that of this great nationality. And what is the use of whining abort our lot! Domestic broils are never productive of good. Nothing can be gained by inveigh- ing against the more influential Provinces. Better, far, to quit ourselves of our duty to the Union like men, and show that we are able te bear the crosses as well as to enjoy the advantages of our changed condition. And, truly, it is passing strange that jeurnals and persons who supported the ‘‘ dashaway policy ” which necessitated our union with Canada—that those who built the railway branches which drained our Treasury, and forced Messrs. Laird and Haythorne to staré for Ottawa in the silent watches of the night ; that the very men who would have accepted terms less favor- able to the Island by $25,000 a year than these under which we entered the Union ; that the self-same individuals who support McKenzie and Cartwright, who constantly maintain that the Island received terms far too favorable and who are most determinedly oppose: to the payment to the Island of its share of the Fishery Award—certainly, it is exceedingly strange that these are the

‘‘ Fairplay ” will see, by referring to a handbill lately issued by the Department of Fisheries. that under this law the Morell, Midgell, Dunk and Winter Rivers have been ‘set apart” for the propogation of fish; and, consequently, anyone who “‘fishes therein without written permission’ is subject to a fine, etc., ete. a Tracadie Notes.

A grand picnic was held at Corran Ban Bridge, on Tuesday, the 8th inst., in aid of the new church now being erected here. The day was favorable ; the location the grandest in America for such a gathering— close by the placid waters of so noble a bay. It is said some $300 was netted from } the sale of cake, syrups, etc. Three danc- ing booths were tastefully erected and well patronized during the day, and in each of which ceuld be seen, at all times, a very great number of young ladies ond gentle- men “tripping the light fantastic toe” in that style and manner which can only be successfully carried out in this place, in- fluenced by sweet music from the violins, which are the property of the district. Say they, times have been bad. We should like to know the spot of earth on the civilized world where the times have been good. How has Confederation made the times worse than they would have been had we remained out of the Dominion! Is it by enabling us to purchase the Proprietory Estates ? Isit by maintaining the Railway ? Is it by enabling our merchants to buy goods in Moutreal, Toronto, Halifax, St. John, ete., and to import them here with- eut laying out one cent in the payment of duties ! It is incumbent upon;the croakers to show how and by what means the union brought about hard times—er forever hold their peace.

Again, they say the public burdens have largely increased. Well it is true that the tariff is higher than before Confederation. But it is true, also, that the prices of imported articles have very materially cheapened. Take almost any of the dutiable articles and compare the prices paid for them in 1872 with those paid now, and it will be found that what we state is true. Has the public burden, then, been increased 2 We do not wish to press this fact too far, because it is undeniable that there has been a sarinkage all over the werld. But we submit that it is not likely prices would have been kept so low as they have been in this Province-—where we have | no home manufactures and are absolutely dependent upon importations— had it not

been that, through the Union, goods from Canada, upon which no duties were paid, came largely into immediate competition with duitable goods imported from other

countries.

Again, it is said that duties are more rigorously collected then before competi- tion? But is it not true that the ante- Union system was most vicious in prin- ciple--most unfair to honest dealers who had to ‘‘ bear the brunt ’’—and that a re- form was required ? Few, we venture to say, except those who used to profit by the systen—at the expense of their neighbors —mourn the reform effected in respect to the collection of duties.

Again, it is said that we have been in- vaded with adventurers from the Upper Provinces, and that our officials have been place! under a disability. This is, in pat, true. Under the rule of the Grits, the Islanct was not fairly treated in respect to officials. If officials were sent to the Island from Ontario, it was but right that Island- ers should be sent to fill offices in Ontario. If officials received a certain salary in the other Provinces, it was surely only right that officials en the Island, of the same class, should be paid the same salaries, But

Tuer: is a bell, says the Quebec Chronicle, on board of the barque ‘‘ Moselle,” of Charlottetown, P. E. L, Captain Daniel Carew, now discharging cargo in Quebec which could tell a strange tale. As the ac- count goes, it was sent from Rome to the Roman Catholic Chapel in Louisburg, Cape Breton, in the sixteenth century. When the British attacked Louisburg, the capital of the colony, under French rule, the bell witha number of other valuables was thrown into the si. At the commencement of the present century, during a raging storm, the bell was cast up again, and frightened the fishermen by ringing among the rocks during the night. From thence it was sent to Antigonish, N.5S., and placed in the tower of the old Roman Ca- tholic Chapel” there. When a large new church was built, the old bell, with all the metal fittings was sold to a Pictou tinman, from whom Captain Carew bought it. It is over 15 inches in height, 12 er 13 inches across the mouth, and has a beautiful sound, It bears the following inscription :—

Tue Brennan ease was concluded in Hali- fax on Wednesday, The prisoner pleaded not guilty, and read a long statemeut expressing himself ready to prove the case to be pure blackmail. He demed Porter's statements in every particular, and saul every means had been used to extort money from him even to the extent of bringing in names of respectable citizens. He said his business had been in- jured through this purely malicious prosecu- tion, and as regards threats made on his life, he read an extract from a letter said to be from Miss Porter, in which she said: ‘Since writing this letter I have heard from express ottice that my trunk was stopped in Halifax by you. If there is anything miss- ing from it when it comes here I will go back to you and kill you, just as soon as I see you, so help me God.” He also denied the allega- tions regarding money alleged to have been detaimed by him from his creditors, and said he was prepared to prove, at the proper time, where he got means with which he purchased back his stock. He promised to show the public the true position of Miss Porter. De- | cision was reserved for one week.

The great talk in Montreal, on the inst., was about a duel between Captain Kirwin, Editor of the r Evening Post, and Mr. Savage, which did not come off. A fair idea of the whole matter can be gath- ered from Captain Kirwan’s statement, which is as follows :—‘‘ There were a num- ber of dances held here during the past winter, supposed to be attended by the best families. { applied for admittance, and was refused on the ground that L was a stranger. I replied that I could furnish any introduction necessary, and receives a reply that there was no room. ro this 1 said { was refused on account of the position [ had taken in the Orange business. That position I aim prepared to stand by, and [ ealled all men who refused me liars and cowards, on ac- count of their conduct in the matter. Mr. Savage, Secretary of the Committee, took this as a personal insult, and thought the terms ‘‘liar” and ‘* coward” applied to himself. but the offended party (that was myself) had no idea of offending: Mr. Savage personally, becanse he was well known to be a liberal man ; but the men that the offended party wished to reach were R. A. B. Hart and J. B. Abbott. He could only reach this through the Secre- tary. An appointment was made with Savage, and we met in St. James street, on the 7th, to fight a duel. Fred. Henshan The ground was measured off and everything was ready. Only those in possession of the se- cret were present, (when, in the cofrse of a few words of conversation, they, learned the quarrel was not between the two prin- cipals, but between one of the principals and another man who was behind—the Secretary of the organization. With a few words of conversation between the seconds, the difficulty was settled to the satisfaction of all. No apology on either side being given or asked. Explanation from both was tendered and accepted, the explanation being satisfactory to all par- ties concerned. No retraction of any kind was necessary. We left the rooms and came to town, and celebrated the bloodless victory by retiring to an hotel. In_ the evening I met one of the persons from whom the insult originally came, on James street, and struck off his hat, and told him it was with him and not with Savage that the quarrel was, and I regarded him as ‘oth a coward and a cur. Another chal- lenge is said to be in order, and there is some sympathy for Kirwan, as one of the parties he is after, is a notorious snob.

While General Tom Thumb was sailing in a yacht on Assawampsett pond, near *Middle- boro’, Mass., recently, the vessel capsized. His party were picked up by a passing boat.

The London ‘‘Times” says that we have learned this much, at least, from the Afghan campaign, that we have Generals of capacity and ofresource, and an army ready for any- thing, and far more likely to complain of too little than too much work.

A correspondent at Berlin draws a gloomy picture of the state of Russia, owing to the Nihilists, the failure of the crops, and the ravages of the corn-beetle, though thousands of roubles have been appropriated to exter- minate the latter.

The French Chamber of Deputies has passed the first six clauses of M. Jules Ferry’s Educa- tion Bill, The debate on the principal clause against the Jesuits was to have taken place on Sunday. The petition against Ferry’s bill now has 1,643,000 signatures.

THERE is a good deal of excitement in Con- stantinople over the escape of ex-Sultan Murad from the Tcheragan Palace, where he has been @ prisoner since Sept., 1876, when be was de- posed. What complicates the matter is that Murad was never formally deposed, his capa- city for reigning being on!y suspended in con- sequence of his mental condition.

The Brown-Blake fight is not yet over. The Kingston Whig declares that one of the prin- cipal causes of the recent Keform success was the work done by Mr. Edward Blake. ‘*The great Liberal party of Ontario,” it says ‘‘will any time foliow the lead of this great tribune of the people to victory and power. What he has so signally helped to do in Ontario he will soon follow up as he did before, by the capture of the Dominion citadel from the Tory enemy.” The Whiys proposal is nothing short of open rebellion against Mr. Brown’s authority.

Tue following is probably the invention of an enemy of monarchial institutions: The Governor General of the Dominion has a foot- man whose dignity is quite too awful. When the Marquis and Princess were inspecting the Kingston Penitentiary; this sublime flunkey asked a prisoner, ‘‘Aw, my man, what are you in heah faw?’ The prisoner, remembering a venerable story, said that he had _ been ar- rested for stealing a saw mill. ‘‘Ah, weally, for that?” said the surprised servant. “Yes,” the prisoner said, ‘* but they did not mind that much. It was because 1 went back to steal the dam that they went for me.” The flunkey said it was very extraordinary, and left an agitated aud astonished man.

for salvage claims, which Messrs. Hunt & Co. had to advance. When the vessel arrived here, Messrs. G. S. Hunt & Co. had her at- tached to cover that amount, and she was sold at auction by Deputy U.S. Marshal Smith, yesterday, to T, McCarthy, of St. John, N. B., for $2,710.
