Conflict Maintains Doctor

“Psychiatry and Religion are not at variance” stated Dr. Jonn C. Theriault of Charlottetown in his address to the Basilica Lay- men‘s Association at their first communion breakfast held at the Community Centre Sunday.

In his talk entitled “Catholic- ism and Psychiatry” Dr. Theri- ault said. that though some schoOls of psychiatry ignored Religion and God, this by no means was true, of psychiatry in general. “Psychiatry”, he said. “is that branch of medicine that deals with signs, symptoms, caus- es and treatment of the mentally and emotionally ill".

“As such", he continued, ‘it is the'product of the ages, and no one school of thought ShOUId be equated with the word phy- chiatry”.

zance of the fact that the pat- ient’s moral and religious values must be considered in treating the individual as a total person--- a spiritual person as well as a biological being.

Briefly touching on treatment, ‘he continued that all treatment in medicine mus-t have in mind “the basic teaching of the church on man, his nature and destiny." ‘ Dr. Theriault discussed some of the changes, sociological and 0th- ewise, that appear to the de- veloping more “character and personality disorders”, though the incidence of mental illness generally does not seem to have increased.

“Is it any wonder then that in this helter-skelter existence that man is turning to psychiatry on help?”, the speaker continued. “But psychiatry has not the final

Windy weather hampered fish- ing operations in most parts of Prince Edward Island during the week of October 12-18 states a release from the Department of Fisheries, Information and Educational Service, Maritime Area.
