In the House of Assemblr, this fsrenoon, Mr. Crawford asked the leader of the Government what action the Government intend to take on a numerously signed petition from the inhabitants of the Third and Fourth Electoral Districts of Queen's County, with reference to granting a sub- sidy towards the construction of a Bridg across the Hillsborough between Charlotte- town and Southport.

In reply, the Hon. Mr. Sullivan said it | was very desirable that a bridge should be built across the Hillsborough, and *he

believed that such a bridge would benefis the residenta of both sides of the river. But the Government have not been placed in possession of suflicient data concerning | the project. This would | utimately lead probably to aline of rail- | way from Charlottetown through Belfast | to Murray Harbor.

A Party without a Policy. Mvcu of the time of the House, for the last week, has been taken up by the Oppo- | sition, in making speeches in opposition to | the grepeal of the Assessment Act. But, | strange to say, the Bill for this purpose | has passed throngh the House (with the | exception of the third reading) without a | division. Messrs. Yeo, Farquharson and Perry have, therefore, voted for the repeal, | notwithstanding their long, windy and non- sensical speeches against it. If these mem- | bers believe that the Assessment Act should not be repealed, they would have | placed their votes against it on record. If | they are right in voting for its repeal, then | they should have had sutfgient regard for | decency to have spoken consistently with | their votes.

The Government demanded that the | Opposition, if they did not approve of the | Government policy on this question, should move an amendment, setting forth their | policy. But n» amount of badgering could | force them to take this manly and straight- forward course,

The truth is that the Opposition have no policy on this or any other question. The estimates submitted by the Government have been most satisfactory to the House, showing, aa they do, that the repeal of the Assessment Act is justifiable, and that there is good prospect of a small surplus for the present year without direct taxation

The Debste Last Night.

During the debate on the Assessment Act, yesterday, Mr. Farquharson, with his usual bad taste, referred to the conduct of the Conservative members in leaving the Coalition Government, in 1878, describing them as ‘‘ traitors’ and insinuating that Mr. DeBlois was guilty of ingratitude to Mr. L. H. Davies, in leaving his Govern- ment, after receiving the office of Pro- vincial Secretary at his hands. Before the discussion was over, the member for West River, avd certainly some of his present colleagues in the Opposition, had abundant reason to regret that they had not allowed ‘*sleeping dogs to lie.” Mr. DeBlois noto aly exposed theabaurdity and meanness of Mr. Farquharson’s iusinuation, but carried the war into Africa,and showed the House most conclusively that Mr. Davies owed much more to Conservative members than they did to him, and that Mr. DeBlois so far from being indebted to Mr. Davies for the Provincial Secretaryship, it was with great reluctance that he accepted office, and his subsequent action in resign. ing when he could no longer remain in the Government with honor to himself, or ad- vantage to the country, fully demonstrated

his unselfishness. But Mr. Gordon’s speech was, probably, the most. pun- gent delivered during the present

While expressing warm personal friendship for Mr. Davies, he declared that, on looking back over the crisis of 1878, he was proud of the step which he, in con- junction with his Conservative colleagues, had then taken. Mr. Davies had been in- fluenced by a number of reckless men, who ruined his Government. Mr. Gordon declared his conviction that the Province was better off to the tune of $200,000 by the dissolution of the Davies’ Administra- tion. The member for Georgetown wei¢hs his words, and his utterances are therefore entitied to great respect.

The Toronto Mail says: Senator Power's efforts to stir up denominational ill feeling for political ends concluded in a fizzle. ** Promises,” he said had been made to his co-religionists before the Jast elections, and these had not been kept. The late Gov- ernment, he aflirmed, had treated the Catholics with a greater degree of justice, and he thought that the gentlemen now in oliice were open to censure for their neg- That is the proposi- tion he set out te prove. When pushed by the arguments and facts of Sir Alexander Campbell, Senator Power was forced to wake an admission which took all the sting out of bis attack asa partisan move. The report of his second speech says : ‘‘ Senator Power said he had no complaint to make against the Government.” He began an attack upon the Government, but before the debate closed he was found ting that they had acted honorably and honestly towards the body of which he had constituted himself the champion.

Now, what was the stutement which com pelled Senator Power to change his attack into which was really a defence—his cen- sure into what was praise of the most valu able kind—the praise of a converted eppon- ent. Sir Alexander Campbell simply gave the figures, which showed that while the Government did not believe in consideriny an applicant’s religion, but his fitness, yet, asa matter of fact, the record of higher appointments showed that, since the pres- ent Government came into power in Nova

Without knowing the fact, we instanced Massachusetts as really having the position he assigned to this Island, and we now find by the Montreal Star that we were suite correct—that State having, at the present time, one mile of railway for nearly its every man, woman and child—having no less than 2,675,807 miles. —Summerside Journal.

It is on Dominion finances that the Journal is greatest; as for instance when i: says that last year Sir Leonard collected $4,000,000 more from customs than ever he did before, and that he had raised last year from that source §22,- 500.000. To send ‘* Trade and Navi- gation Reports” to a paper like that is like casting pearls before swine, with the difference that swine seem to have sense enough to knew that they are not using the gift. —Chignuecto Post.

In arecent suit against a railroad for damages the plaintiff recovered £5,000. The case referred to was tried at Leeds assizes. and the jury gave the above verdict against the rathroad, not because of the personal in- juries the plaintiff had sustained by the railroad accident, but because he had lost substantial profits which he had been accus- tomed to earn in various ways. The plain- tiff was a plumber, a painter, a paper- hanger and the landlord of the Providence inn. He had also established his reputa- tion as the champion comic singer of Lan cashire and Yorkshire. In the West Ruding of Yorkshire there was a great demand for his branch of art, and he earned a considerable income by his engagements. His counsel presented sta- tistics before the Court which went to show that his client’s voice induced many customers to enter his inn and drink fabu- lous quantities of beer. But about a year ago the plaintiff was unlucky enough to be in a railway accident at Normanton, and sustained the injuries which usually result from such accidents. He sang no more, and, as he could not sing, the men of Leeds could no longer drink beer at the Providence Inn. The consumption of malt liquors deciined, and the little income of $2500 a year which he was wont to put together by dint of his various accomplish- ments came toan end. The company did net deny their liability, but they doubted amount of plaintiff's income. The jury, however, awarded the plaintiff the amount asked for.

A case of sore interest to railroad men was tried at Belleville, Ontario, recently, being entered Couch vs. Midland Railway. ‘This was an action by a mother for the loss of her son, who was killed while in the em- ploy of the defendants as a brakeman, by a stick of timber projecting from one of two cars which he was coupling. His Lordship told the jury that the amount which the plaintiff should receive if the defendants were found to be liable would be computed ior a period to be afterwards determined at whatever rate per week they found she ought to have. A number of questions were submitted to them, and their answers to some of them were favorable to the com- pany, and to others adverse. The rate per week to which they found the plaintiff would be entitled to, if anything, was $2. A third action against the same company is yet to be tried.

Hanlan is very much put out about it, and is afraid its non arrival may jeopardize to some extent his chance of winning.
