A Terribly Fatal Fire.

work On th 6th. The scene of the fire was one of the wildest excitement and

terror. The streets in the vicinity were thronged with people anxious to be of

service, but owing to the rapid spread

of the flames, they were helpless to render aid. Terror-stricken parents rushed frantically round searching for their children and wailing over their The firé-dvpartment was of no avail agamst the mad rush of the surg- ing flames and in one hour the entire building was a mass of ruins.

The follewing from Belleville gives thrther particulars of the burning. The convent was known as the Institute of fue Immaculate Conception, and was conducted by the sisters of Notre Dame. The fire was the most destructive to life and property tha® Belleville has ever experienced. A visit to the scene on the 6th showed the firedepartment still on duty endeavouriog to quench the flames to as to preserve in recognizable shape the bodies of the victims. When the ruins were sufficiently cooled a volun- teer corps went to work to bring ont the bodies. It was a terrible sight. At times searchers would find two or three charred masses huddled close together as if the victims had sought the advanc- ing flames. Two bedies were found io the rear partof the building burned into an unrecognizable mass, but the majority were found beneath where the dormitory was situated. They seemed to have sought shelter in this room too late to recognize that it was impos- sibleto’ escape from it. The flames beneath eating away the supports let down the floor into the seething vortex offire and smoke. The loss of life is much greator than estimated on the 5th, Instead of two, as at first supposed, the total known deaths is twenty-seven, twenty-two pupils and five sisters. Among the latter is the sister superior.

The human pulse has rather a wide range,but the general average has been put about as follows:—At birth, 140; at two years, 100;as from 16to 19 years, 80; at manhood, 75; old age, 60. There are, however, great variations consistent with health. Napoleon’s pulse is said to have been only 44 in the minute. A case is also related of a healthy man of 87 whose pulse was sel- dom 30 during the last two years of his life, and sometimes not over 26. Another man of 87 years of age enjoyed good health and spirits with a pulse of 29, and there is also on record the curi- ous instance of a man whose pulse in health was never more than45,and to be consistent in his inconsistency,when he had fever his pulse fell to 40, instead of rising, as is usual.

As the express train from Mulgrave, Antigonish, N, S., reached Afton station one day recently, Conductor McKay, when coming off the rearmost platform was amazed to See & man With his hands and feet around-the truss of a car ahead, his appearance clearly showing that he had been there for some time, Had he loosened his hold, he would have been instantly crushed. He had ridden there from Mulgrave, about 20 miles.

EXPERIENCE.

The Rev. Z. P. Wilds, well-known city missionary in New York, and brother of the late eminent Judge Wilds, of the Massachusetts Supreme Court, writes as foilows:
