The heavy task of dealing with the thousands of photographs that were obtained, discussing them and deducting the sun's distance, has re- cently bcen completed at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. The snn’s distance (largest radius 0f the orbit of the earth) is found to be 93,005,- 000 miles, with an uncertainty of 10,000 miles. The hitherto accepted distance has been about 92.S50,000 miles, with an uncertainty of 50,000 ttiilcs.

Hospital Appeal

This week, on Oct. 1, 2 and 3, the annual col- lection for the Prince Edward Island Hospital will be taken in Charlottctown. lt should not be necessary to make any detailed explanation of this demand. The work of our hospitals, should Ipublic benefactions fail, would necessarily have to be carried on by the Government entirely. We ‘could scarcely call ourselves a Christian com- munity if we ignored an appeal of this kind. The P. E. I. Hospital is functioning very eco- nomically, but it cannot operate without the cpn- tributions which are bcittg asked for this week. A prompt and generous response, such as has been given in the past, is cxpcctctl oti this oc- casion. Plaintiff alleged, in fact, that he suffered damage by reason of the state- lments made by the defendant to the amount of $5,000. He asked for judgment for this amount. ‘The Court found that there was no proof of the provocation which defendant, who was on the {witness stand at the time, pleaded in justifica- tion of the statement he made to the plaintiff.
