Gold in Cape Breton.
Apropos of the account of the find of precious metals on Cape Breton, recently published in THE ExAMINER, we purpose telling a little story :—
Three seasons ago, this coming December, we made a voyage from Boston to Charlottetown iv the 8.8 Carroll. The voyage was a fine one, the weather like summer, permitting the | passengers to remain on deck all day to epjoy the warm sunshine avd the balmy salt air. It was a most enjoyable time ; and this may easily be believed when we say that the present staff of genial, | jovial, attentive, capable officers, who {now sail the ship, were then on board | {ulfilliog their duties as at present. At Port Hawkesbury we were joined by two or three gentlemen /deadheads) bound to Pictou. One of these gentle- men carried carefully under his arm a basket which proved to coftain aup- posed ores and geological specimens of curious colors aud uature. Everybody was allowed to examine the specimens as much as they pleased, but there was an air of mystery about the whole affair, All the gentlemen were very reticent, and the gentleman owning the | basket was very genial, but he appeared to have somethicg important locked up in his breast. His companions, as well as | the leading officers of the boat. seemed aware of the secret. Now and then a word would be dropped about a com- pavy in au undertone, aud then again the words “crnshing and analysis,” might be heard. Before we got to Pictou we found that the gentleman with the basket was on his way to Boston to have his specimens examine by experts. The gentleman owniug the specimens had been for many years a general trader on Cape Breton. In his intercourse with the fishermen and farm-
time broughthim many odd geological specimens; and as his penchant for collecting increased, the more specimens were brought him. Many stories were told him of places where queer looking recks were to be seen. At length, hav- ing found leisure to prospect himself, he set out with his little set of tools slung over his shoulder in a_ bag. He visited mountain top and hillside; cliff, crag, crany and crevice; run,gulch, and cavern. He found specimens galore. Of course he made many expeditions to accomplish what we have stated. He made, as he supposed, two or three lucky finds. He showed the specimens, and as he now considered himself something of a mineralogist, began to talk a little learnedly about the specimens to his in- timate frievds,and he seemed to have im- pressed the importance of his finds upon their minds. He did not divulge the secret of thespots whence the precious specimens were taken to any one. It did not take much urging to cause him to proceed to Boston, especially as the aclive trading season was almost over. After our return home we _ waited patiently, with our hand behind our ear, for months, for the burst of news of the great find of precious metals on Cape Breton ; but there was no burst. We have since learned that the owner of the specimens has,ever since his return home that same December, been assiduously and industrously dealing out goods to his customers,and that he is now satisfied to be contented with the legitimate profits arising from the sale thereof.

A Trip Through Cape Breton.
One would think that a country so richly favored by nature as Cape Breton is, and lying as it does in the very track of commerce between the old world and the new, would be one of the first to have all its natural resources and geo- graphical advantages made known and utilized. Inexhaustible stores of coal, silver, copper and gypsum, are fouod on every hand, and the Bras d’ Or Lakes give easy access to every part of the Island. Yet the mountains still hold their treasures awaiting the hand of young Canadian enterprise to demand their surrender to the uses of mankind.
I have already written to you some- thing about what may be seen on the way to Whycocomagh. Perhaps a glimpse of the sights to be seen on the way to Sydney may be of interest. Let me here digress for a moment into re- marking on the practice of the Steamboat Company plying between the different ports of Cape Breton, of ruvning their boats during the night. It is very incon- venient avd annoying for tourists and looks like a “ job’ between the Company and the hotel-keepers.
However, on the trip between Baddeck and Sovth Sydney, by a feat of early rising, I partly defeated their conspiracy. The ‘Marion’ had left Baddeck at 3 a.m. and ata little after daybreak I got on deck. We were then steaming up the Big Bras d Or, as the long narrow pas- sage between Boularderie Island and the

mainland, is call'd. By the time the mouth of this strait was reached the sun was justrising from his ocean bed. A thin bank of red clouds lay along the horn, through which the sun appeared as if seen through a smoked glass. But these clouds were speedily dispersed, avd with them vanished the chilling ocean- mist that hung around. After Point Aconi was rounded, and Cranberry Point of stormy memory was left behind, the sea became smooth, and we soon saw several tall chimaeys, not far from the shore, pointing out ihe place where the miners were at work be- low, day and night alike. The galleries from some of these mines run far out under the ocean, even under the track of the steamers sailing on the blue waters above. South Sidney or ‘the Bar,” as the people of South or old Sydney call it in derision of its modern origin, is in the heart of the great coal region of Cape Breton. Its fine harbor is filled with vessels of every description, from ocean steamers to fishing boats and coal schooners. Old Sydney is on an arm of the sea about four miles further from the ocean, the intervening coast being enlivened with the sights of the vessels lying at the long piers connected by rail with the different coal mines ix the interior. Old Sidney is a quiet healthy Jittle place. It was one of the earliest settlements made by the French in old Acadia. Some earthwork remains still mark the place of their camp. With Old Sidney as his headquarters, the traveller may, if he has sufficient time, make an excursion to historic Louisburg. I was ‘much disappointed in not getting there. A coal train with a passenger car attach- ed ran formerly between Sidney and ‘Louisburg, but the road went out of ‘repair, and the trains on it were stopped ‘some four or five yearsago. *°
| By returning home by the East Bay ‘mail route, [ saw a pew section of the country. It-was a beautiful moonlight night when the mail coach left Sydney for East Bay, a distance of twelve miles. The road for the first few miles lay with- in sight of Sydney Bay or “The Forks,” ,as the head of the bay is called, after which it passed a chain of fresh water lakes, lying at the foot of a range of high hills. Standing for a moment at a com- manding situation near their eastern ex- tremity, the whole silvery chain cou!d be seen stretching in an unbroken line to within a mile or two of East Bay. On the retarn journey through the western part of the Bras d'Or Lake, I had an op- portunity of seeing many _ sights that [ had previously passed in the darkness. Nothing can be im magined more beautiful than this part of the Lake ; there the islands lie so close together, as to make, to a_ novice, navigation seem impossible. In one place in particular, the steamer seemed fairly land-locked. For some time no exit from the basin in which she was, large enough for a capoe to go through with- out grazing, could be. seen, when suddenly, an unexpected turn revealed a passage through which the steamer glided in safety. After 4 pleasant trip.the St. Peter’s canal was reached, and with many regrets, I bade adieu to the Bras d'Or Lakes. c

The Treatment of Lunatics.
Tue Montreal Herald says: It is never safe to trust men or women with arbitrary power. The temptation to abuse it is exceedingly stropg and it is seldom resisted. Bui the power in the bands of managers of lunatic asylums is almost without limit. They can do what they please with the unfcrtunate lunatics without fear of complaint or exposure from them. They need super- vision. This supervision must necessar- ily be exercised by those who are outside the asylum. It must be strict and it must be constant. Nothing is surer than that if the managers of lunatic asylums are not well looked after they will abuse their authority. They will both neglect and ill treat these who are so entirely under their control. It is time that a rigid enqniry was instituted into the manage- ment of the Provincial Asylums, and it is the duty of all humane men, and of the Press particularly, not to cease agiteting until it is perfectly plain that the unfortunate insane who cannot shift for themselves are treated in accordance with the teachings of the most enlight- eved humanity.
Tue ‘‘Myrtle Navy plug” correctly re- presents the whole plan upon which its manufacture is conducted. There is not a fractional part of a cent expended upon it for mere appearance. It is aeither wrapped in tin foil nor worked into fancy shapes, nor put in any fancy cases, nor subjected to any kind of expense merely to please the eye or captivate the fancy. The manu- facturers rightly believed that tobacco was not purchased for ornament, but for smok- ing and therefore all extraneous expense wasavoided and added to the quality of the tobacco. The public have testified jn kn case that they prefer paying their money |for a high quality of article than for orna-
