And the old arms wept round the young neck, and the old eyes and the young wept together in the silence—the silence hroken only by the hiss ofthe keitle on the stove, the tick of the clock on the mantle, and the feet of the storm beating their wild way every where without.

‘ Toot’s so tired, sister, can't we sit down josta tiny minute now?’

They were half way up the hill beyond which, a quarter of a mile, stood the warm little home of Harry Knowles.

A Horrible Crime.—The London Times gives an account of a horrible crime for which John Stanney has been tried at Man- chester. The prisoner and his wife had been married for about a year, and lived at Oldham ; and it appeared that from five weeks before the offence was committed, up to the very day previous to it, there had been some jealousy on his part, and that on one occa- sion he told her tuat he would ‘ make her so as no one would look at her, by throwing oil of vitro! upon her.’ Upon the day in question (the 15th of March last) the two were to- gether in the house, and the prisoner, who had purchased the oi! of vitrol an hour before, went into a back kitchen and poured it intoa basin. It} was the most painful spectacle he ever ré- collected seeing in a court of justice, when the poor woman got into the witness box,and no one could entertain the slightest sympathy with the prisoner, who, in the statement which he had read, had not expressea the slightest contrition. He sentenced him to penal servitude for life. The sentence met with tokens of approbation from a crowded court, which were immediately suppressed.
