in the September 23rd issue of the Saturday Evening Post is an article entitled - New Yorkers Are Really Hayaeede. ft is the story of Roosevelt Raceway which opened in the summer of 1040 with racing under the lights, and the struggles and losses its pro- moters had to make it popular. In 1942 they lost 8200.000. In 1019 they conducted 147 nightly pro- grams, drew 2,281,534 customers and over 395 million went through the pari-mutuels. In 104-0 the paid customers for the entire season was 75,175 and one night last year Roosevelt had 30,535. In ten years Roosevelt Raceway has become the biggest harness horse opera- tion in the world. offering more races, drawing more customers. handling more money, distributing more in purses than any other trotting track anywhere. A great deal of its success is attributed to its president, George Morton Levy and the part he has played is well featured in the write up. A two- thirds page reproduction of a rac- ing scene at Roosevelt . Raceway shows the mobile Starting Gate moving ahead of the horses and the stands filled with spectators. Third from the rail driving in- dian Land is Joe O'Brien. Then there are pictures of the stables at the track, Mr. and Mrs. Levy, etc.

A visitor to the Charlottetown race track will see a wrecking gang busy tearing down the lit) horse stalls at the southern side 01 the track. not that there is any- thing wrong with the stalls, many of them are comparatively new- built in 1932 to 1938 - and all are in good repair: but the government is taking another slice of land - in fact has cut so deeply into the Exhibition property that many of the stalls are so precariously perched that a really heavy wind would blow them over into the cutdown portion at the back. We asked secretary-treasurer Com- mander G. H. Buntain how they proposed to house the race horses and he produced a plan for new stables, two of which are to be started at once and. completed this fall. These will be replicas of the recently built stables at Roose- velt Raoeway, considered the lat- est in modern race horse barns.

Each stable will hold 20 horses and the stalls will be ten feet by ten feet, back to back with a ten foot awning all around. At each end will be two tack stalls and two feed stalls and there will be an alleyway all around them which will allow horses to be walked un- der the awning in rainy weather. Clay is being taken, out of the cen- tre field and hauled to the east end. of the track to make the fill foundation for the new barns and room is being left for a paddock where all horses racing at night will be brought to be hitched prior to being brought out on the track.

modern barns which when com- pleted wili compare favorably with those at Roosevelt, Maywood. Sara- toga and other top night racing plants. They will have running water and electric. lights. The old show horse barns on the Kensington Road have all been de- molished and will be replaced with a chain link fence to make the property more attractive in appearance.

The trotter Baron 2.11. has changed hands and is now in the ownership of Frgn-k Daniels. Law- reneetown. NS. The writer felt badly about selling, because in all my experience I have never had a more reliable race horse, with per- fect manners on the score, never making a break and always doing his best. He has a great deal of intelligence and knew just about how much warm up he needed in preparation for a race. After the race when he was being cooled out he would hunt around waiting for his lumps of sugar and he could spot me even in'a crowd and come up and nudge me in the back. He was brought here ori- ginslly by the late .1. Pope Clarke, through many hands since. Joe O'Brien had him at Foxborc night raoing plant the first year it was operated and Bu-on made good there, in fact every owner has had succus with him and we trust Mr. Daniels will .also. Having sold Baron we suc- cumbed to temptation very quickly jnd bought the pacer Buddy Clegg no so, from Iowan! Cole. ills- field. Buddy is a five-year-old geidliu by Abner T. Clell. hll quite a flash of loud and we horn will give us as much pleasure as Baron did.

An admirer of Worrell Lewis writing on September Dtth from Sydney informs us thatitha Cape Breton horseman has already

scored as first. 35 seconds. 23 thirch and 3 fourths and in a tilt with Veila La Vella had won with Crusader Chief in 2.10 3-5-(prevl- oua record 112) in the first heat. The next heat was a photo finish with Veils getting the decision. It was a great battle. Last year Worrell was top driver of the Maritimes and from the way he is going it looks as though he may land there again.

' Cold weather, particularly K it is windy, may slow a trotier or pacer. up as much as six seconds and it certainly has not been Warm any night the past couple of weeks, yet when we look at the summaries of the races under the lights at Truro we note some mighty good performances such as happened on Monday night September 25th when Aubrey Bud- long won the third race in 2.12, Doctor L. B. the sixth race in 2.13. T en again on Monday night Lady A er (Cyril Smith) won a classi- fied in 2.18, Seven Up Direct (L. Walker) a classified pace in 2.113-5 -the fastest mile of the evening -with Gay Law (A. Allen) sec- ond, Sing-le Streak (.1. Conroy) third and Miss Knox (L. 0'Meara) fourth. A previous heat with the same starters was won by Single Streak with Seven Up Direct sec- ond. ' The classified trot was won by Nelda Hanover (C. MacLeod); Baron, making his first start in the ownership of Frank Daniels, was second, time. 2.17. Jennie Kal- muck (O'Donnell) won both heats of a classified trot and pace. the first in 2.15 and the second in 2.14 245. Good time has been a feature of the racing at Truro this year and it has been due largely to a thorough covering of new loam given the oval by the an- agement last Spring. They ent to a great deal of trouble and ex- pense to get the right type of soil and it has certainly paid off.

The climax to the night racing at Truro Raceway will come on Saturday night. October 7th, and on .Monday afternoon - Thanks- KIYUIZ Day - the season's racing Will end with a big flashy pro- Eram featured by s two-mile trot -four times around the oval - with eight or more of the best trotters racing in the Maritimes taking part. There will also be a Free For All. the first dash for 3300 at one mile and the second dash for 3400 with the distance one and one-half miles. Besides these there will be seven classi- fied dashes. Our congratulations to the urbane manager, Carl Mac- Kenzie, and President Fred Lahey. on their promotion of so many worthwhile races at the Truro oval this season.

A correspondent asks what has happened to George Lewis, who was so successful with the Harry Hirsch stable last season? Our answer is that George holds a very important position with the Domin- ion Coal Company and had leave of absence last year, which could not be obtained this season. We all mised him as he is one of the best drivers in the game ind I gentleman on and off the track. We understand that next season or possibly the following season he will be back in drlveris togs again and will certainly be welcomed by his host of horsemen friends and spectators.

A writer in a New York paper compares the runners with the harness horses as follows: "Riding runners, thundering thorough- breds, requires skill, equilibrium, some horsemanship, courage, and strength. Today's crop of Jockeys, on the whole. does not measure up to that of yesteryear. A lad gallops horses for a few months, then is sent forth under silks. Like a monkey, he perches pre- cariously over his mounts with- ers. standing in the stirrups, clutching the reins in the manner of s straphanger on a streetcar. After a few seasons. a rider may have won gold and glory, or he may have hung up his lack. due to increasing weight. The age of the average jock is estimated as being in the early twenties. Driv- lrig hsirness horses, those stan- dard bred trottera and pacers. calls for much ability. a great deal of horrernanshi . nerve, good judgment of pace and strong arms. A driver isn't developed over- night like a jockey. For year-rand years, he must be around steeds, working with them. taking care of their gear. ibulng thorn in warm- up spins. and the like. Launching into full swing this afternoon at twoo'clock over Mem- orial Field. 108 contestants will take part in the annual Provincial Interscholastic Track and Field championships. The leading event of its kind in school athletics each year, the present program is ex- pected to produce a high calibre of keen competition. when the thirteen schools who will be rep- resented at the meet, will vie for leading Island honors in a total of some 19 events. . I

Postponed from last Saturday because of rain, officials feel that the week's delay will only tend to make the competition that much keerier and closer today. as it has given the respective competators just that much more time to train and condition themselves for im- proved performance.

Also scheduled for this after- noon. at the S. D. U. gridiron, the first rugby contest of the season will be held there when the newly formed Charlottetown Abegweit squad will clash with the senlaor saint Dunstan's University ag- gregation in an exhibition match. Made up of many well-known loc- al players, most of them ex P. W. C. and S. D. For those reasons, both squads will be "unknown quantities” in the way of strength when they meet today. which should make the contest doubly interesting as to the final outcome. for attending rugby fans. With nothing more than the glory of a victory at stake, it will he a great opportunity for both squads to test their strength for future competition this season. and It is expected that plentv of rugged action will be .the. result.

The Provincial Junior baseball champlonshln finals will be the feature snorting attraction on Sun- dav at Memorial Field. when the Knights of Columbus and the iunior Curran and Briggs teams battle it out there, commencing at 1:30. It will be the decidlnit feature of their best of three series for the Island junior title. .

The junior curranites will be the top dogs. going. into Sunday's bat- tle as the result of their 14-13 victory over the Knights in the series opener at the Western Cap- ital on Wednesday. Whether the Sunday feature will be a double- header or not, will depend entirely on who wins the second game. If the C and B boys come through it will be all over. But if the Ryan- ooached Knights come out on top it will tie up the series and send into a third and final game to de- cide the title. If a third game is

The meet was originally schedul- ed to take place last Saturday, but had to be postponed one week due to unfavoursble weather conditions.

Fall Golf Tourney Today

A very large crowd is expected at the Belvcdere links of the Char- lottetown Golf club this afternoon for the first annual fall tourm- ment, -which will be the final big tourney of the season.

Play will get underway at twi o'clcck.

The 18-hole, net, medal play match, should festure some very close competition as each compet- itor attempts to play to his handl- cap.

Quoii Tourney

Gordon Garnhum and Price Thompson captured the second Division championship in Pro- vincial Quoit Tournament play held at the Parkdale Quoit Club last evening.

They defeated George Ayers snd Gordon Mutlow two games to none in the final round.

Third division play is expected to get underway next week at the Bracklev Quoit Club.

For over twenty years it has been my bu.sinesa,to keep teb's on the ducks before every opening date and I can truthfully state that never bi all my years of duck check- ing have I seen them so scare as they are this season.

I am. not going to try and give the why s.nd the wherefore of the present short local duck crop. I do know that biologists employed by the Department concerned at Ot- tawa are worried over the situa- tion. Informstlon received recently indicates that the sister Maritime provinces (N.s. and N.B.) are not much better off than we are our- selves. We have some sizable con- centrations .. . . several that I know of bold around five hundred . . . . , but what are they among so many hunters.

Initial reports seeping in from the West indicates that there is no shortage of Mallnrds on the prairies. The season in Alberta is now open and several western hunt-' ers of my acquaintance bagged their limit of mallards during the first hour of shooting. one friend wrcte: quote ". . . ..
