And away rumbled the wagon into the mist aud twilight.
It had hardly disapppeared when a little laud arrived with a note for Hetty.
It’s from Papa, said Hetty, hurriedly opening it und reading aloud the follow- ing brief message :
“DEAR GIRLS :—Old Eldwood is very bad, and I shail probably be detained all night. Lock up the house as usual, and don’t expect me until I come.

“Oh, dear,” suid Hetty, blankly; ‘aad what is to become of Dakin’s child?”
“[ never suw such a child as as you are, Hetty,” suid lovely Sibyl, with a pettish eontraction of the brows. ‘You're al ways shouldering other people’s troubles. What is Dukin’s child to us, I'd like to know ?”
But only think of it, Sibyl, suid Hetty, elasping ber hands, a dear little baby suffocating to death, all for the want of the simplest remedies,
