Canada's Elements

The Dominion Bureau of Statistics gives a. survey of the distribution of Canadians by races as shown in the census of 1941. The figures re- leased by the Bureau show that half the people of Canada are of British origin, that is, have OOme or are descended from those who have come from t-hc United Kingdom of Great Bri- tain and Ireland; that the ratio of those of French origin is 1 in 3, while Canadians of other European descent are in the ratio of I to 6. The records also show a. slight decline in the British ratio, and s. slight increase in the French during the decade since the last census was taken.

Here are the percentages as shown in the latest census returns: From British Isles 49.7 per cent as compared with 51.9 in 1921 ; French Can- adians 30.3 per cent as compared with 28.2 ten years ago; other European races 17.8 per cent against 17.6 in 1931. Asiatics show a dc- cline in ratio, these races now constituting .6 of the population as compared with .8 ten years ago.

last census, 5.715904 persons of British Isles origin in the present population of Canada, and 3,483,038 of French origin. The respective figures for 1931 were 5,381,071 British as com- pared with ZQZTJJQO Frcnch.

It is interesting to note that there is a larger eletncnt of British origin in Prince Edward Is- land, where it stands at 82.8 pcr ccnt, than in any other ]11‘o\'i111‘(’. Nova Scotitfs proportion is 77 per cent. Mr. Nicholson, reviewing the case 1n the House, urged the Posunaster General to change the system which puts postal appointments under political patronage. "A de- feated candidate," he said, “causes s11 this confusion in a conurtunity. It has affected the war savings campaign and the Victory loan campaign. . . .
