i Trotting Races at Cardigan.

Tho residents of Cardigaa and adjoining | settlements enjoyed a grand day's sport at Cardigan River, on Thursday, 20th inst.

The ice was in good condition and the day was fine, and consequently a large crowd assembled to see the sport. The entries in the several races were promptly made, and the arrangements throughout were all that could be desired.

Messrs. Hugh L. McDonald, George D. Alley and Thomas Garland were, appointed judges, and Mr. Patrick Cain acted as atarter. Patrol judges were also appointed to see that no running took place.

The heats in the several classes were ‘closely contested, in some instances the winning horse coming in under the wire barely a length ahead.

The first race was for horses under three years. The entries were Ewen McGregor's black colt Hughie, sired by Buchanan's

This was the most interesting race of the day, as Lottie C. had distanced her oppo- nents at the races in Georgetown some time previously, and had shown good speed. McGregor's Hughie, however, was too fast for the filly and took the race in three straight heats, with Rosa Nell third and — Bissett’s filly fourth.

/Death of Mrs. William Lawson.

(Halifax Herald.)

The Herald deeply regrets to announce the death of Mrs, Wiiliam Lawaun. A lady of marked individuality, character, and business and literary ability, foremost in every religious, benevolent and charitable work—she was one of the few women that Halifax can ill afford to spare; and her death will be sincerely deplored by all classes of the community. The deceased

cancer, aud had undergone one or more painful operations. But these only served to prolong existence for a short time, Some months ag: it became patent that the life of this estimable lady could not be pro- longed for any length of time. Since then, though suffering great bodily pain, she calmly awaited the transfer to the higher life. Mrs. Lawson was known all over the Dominion as one of Canada’s foremost literary women. Her contributions over the initials M. J. K. L. were not only gladly welcomed by the local press, but frequently graced the pages of papers in various parts of the Dominion ; aud were always wideiy read and greatly appreciated. Articies or poems from her ready and soul stirring pen appeared in all, or nearly all, the special editions of the Herald or Mail during the past ten years. Mrs. Lawson was a lady of broad views and great energy, and the fact that she was actively connect- ed with an enterprise or undertaking en- sured success, No one was more successful at raising funds for institutions in want of assistance. Her latest efforts in this line were on behalf of the Church of England Institute and the Art School.

The Archbishop’s Investment.

The Halifax Mail says: For some time past negotiations have been pending be- tween Archbishop O’Brien and Dr. Butler, son of the late Hon. James Butler, for the purchase of the Butler homestead on Dres- den Row. Yesterday a sale was effected to the Archbishop for a sum said to be consid- erably over $10,000. ‘It is not known yet whether it will be used fora glebe house or a private residence for the Archbishop. The stables and all surrounding land be- longing to the late James Butler are ‘includ- ed in the purchase. Possession will be taken, it is understood, at an early day. The house is one of the largest in the city. A few years ago the late Hon. Jas. Butler enlarged the premises, and made extensive alterations, fitting it with all modern im- provements.

I gives me great pleasure to be able to ex prees my obligations to the representatives of the C. P. R, wherever I had to come officially in contact with them, From Shanghai to thie beautiful city of Toronte, the courtesy and friendly attention of all the agents of the Company were all thet could be desired. And though travellers must find some cause of grumbling, never did J] hear any other then language of praise as to the conduct of officials on both land and sea, When the new steam- ers are on, I can conceive of no route to the Far Kast with more of the comforts desired, and less of the unpleasantness dreaded by travellers than this one. The cooking on the dining-cars was surprising for excellence, only in a less degree than the magnificence of the scenery west of Calgary. It is certainly a mistake to rush through that portion of the route. Guide books treat with enthusiasm of the scenery about North Bay, and expecially of that on the northernshore of Lake Superior. It probably is striking to one journeying west- wards, but to us coming from the west it ecemed of comparatively little consequence. Most of us would bave been fully satisfied had we seen only the Cascade Mountains with their innumerable streams tumbling down the almost precipitous heights, and the roaring, foaming river furiously leaping down its rocky bed gt their foot. But when the grandeur of these proved to be only introductory to the almost terrific grandeur of the Gold, and e+- pecially the Selkirk range, the brain became siinply stunned, so that when the proud calm- ness of Mt. Stephen looked down upon as it appeared only as a matter uf course, scareely deserving a note of sdmiration. The traveller should take at least four days instead of two in crossing those dread mountains, From my reading I thoughtit would have been proper occasionally to teel highly nei vous; but this was impossible, as the road everywhere is solidly constructed and the drivers so careful.
