A Wisconsin mink rancher re- ports that he has developed a new type of dark ranch mink with a "deep blue underfur and jet blue- black guard hairs.” He is D.w. DeHart of the Northern View Mink Ranch of Berlin, Wis. Mr. DeHa.rt states that he has been working to produce this new type of dark mink, which he has named Blu Black, for a number of years, and that he was successful for the first time last year. He says he has en- ough of the new variety to begin pelting this year and the first of- fering of Blu Blacks will be in January at the United Mink Breed- ers sale at Lampson, Fraser an Huth. Inc. Mr. Deliart has been ranching mink for twenty years.

We are giving a few fur farm facts from a. report of Willard B. Shelden. statistical director, who spoke at the 9th annual meeting of the National Board of Fur Farm organizations . . . Mink ranching is getting to be quite a business in this province and we tnist that it will continue to grow in volume. For those who are estaiblished and have good strains and can buy their feed at a reasonable price there appears to be a future here. The matter of feed is one of the

IRON

Iron was known to man in pre- historic times. Ancient people re- ferred to it as "metal from heav- en", which would indicate that they had found it where meteors fell. and that they considered it very rare and precious. some of the earliest relics are beads made of iron found in a cemetery in Egypt, believed to have been made about 8,000 years ago. Iron wedding rings were great- ly prized in early Roman times.

Archeologists refer to the age of bronze as prehistoric, but the poems of Homer would indicate. that the transition period from bronze to iron or the coming of the iron age in Greece corresponded with the late stages of the prehistoric bronze era and the beginning of history in that country. The use of iron spread in Europe from south to north and the iron age only reached the Scandinavian countries about the beginning of the Christian era. The first iron implements in Scandin- avia. were quite different from those used by the Romans, but by the middle of the period, marked Ro- man characteristics appeared in the iron weapons, implements and or- naments. The decorative designs of the iron age were quite different from those of the bronze age.

Characteristics

The chemical symbol for iron is Fe. (ierrirm); its atomic weight is 55.85 and the metallic chemical ele- ment has a specific gravity of 7.84. Pure iron is white with a bright luster and is very tough and much softer than ordinary iron and is a chemical curiosity, obtained by re- ducing pure oxide of iron. at very high temperatures, by charcoal or hydrogen. Its melting-point is so high that it will burn (oxidize), it an attempt is made to fuse it in air before it is melted, Crude or pig iron contains many impurities which protect it from burning be- fore it reaches the melting point. some of these impurities are car- bon, sulphur. phosphorus and sili- con. but there are many others that occur in minute quantities, in- cluding copper, calcium. arsenic. manganese and other metals. Malleable or wrought iron is hard and will take a high polish, its tex-

The first record concerning the manufacture of iron occurs in Gen- esis 4:22, which mentions: "Tubal- cain, an instructor of every artlficer in brass and iron". There was an old rhyme that said:

There is no record of how prim- itive man first succeeded in extract- ing iron from iron ore. It has been suggested that perhaps on some occasion his camp fire happened to be on a spot rich in iron ore. (A not fire and the charcoal embers would extract the oxygen from the ore and crude iron would be form- ed). In this or some other way man increased his supply in addition to that secured from meteors, and he learned to shape implements, tools and weapons to meet his needs.

While some have claimed that man made use of iron as early as 1350 B.C., it was not until about 1350 A. D. that there is an histor- ical record that he finally succeed- ed in constructing a furnace that would withstand temperatures high enough to melt iron ore, and con- tainers that would hold the molten metal. Tho extra heat was secured by forcing a blast of air into N18 fumace, and one of the earliest of these furnaces was developed lll northern Spain. and was known as the Catalan forge. The Spanish ironmakers were driven north by the invasion of the Moors. and some reached the mlley of the Meuse in Belgium. This area be- came a. centre of the iron industry, and there is evidence that it was there that the blast furnace was fully developed from the Catalan forge.

While police were dragging the river for the body of the drowned woman, I man who clalrned to be the woman's uncle suddenly ap- peared on the river bank. He carried a loaf of bread in one hand and a tall taper in the other. sticking the candle in the loaf of bread, he went down on his knees and offered I brief prayer. Then he told the police to float the lighted candle out on the river. "When the candle topples over, there you'll find the body" he told them.

Sterling w.t.g Annual Meeting

The annual meeting of Sterling W. 1., Stanley Bridge, was held at the home of Mrs. Lorne Macliiwen on November 11th.

The meeting opened by singing "0 Canada" and repeating the Creed. The president, Mrs. Elmer Fyfe. read a poem in keeping with Armistice Day.

Fifteen members answered roll call by paying membership fees and four new members were wel- comed. Minutes of the last annual and monthly meetings were read and approved.

The president gave a. splendid re- port of the year's work, and the secretary-treasurer also gave her report showing receipts for the year to be S58326; expenses 3363.28, leaving a balance of s2l9.98.

The visiting committee gave their report. Thanks were expressed by membeis present for treats received. The school committee also reported.

All officers were re-elected, with the exception of the vice-presi- dent, as she had moved away. Mrs. Alban Bolger was appointed and the one new director in place of Mrs. Bolger was Mrs. Woolner and assistant secretary, Mrs. Vernon MacLean.

The correspondence was read and discussed. Mrs. Green, Red Cross secretary. gave her report of the year's work. it was decided to send for more work for the coming year.

There are three definite compounds of iron with oxygen: First, ferrous oxide, (Feo). this is the base of the green or ferrous salts of iron; sec- ond, ferric oxide. tFe2 03). this is the base of the red or ferric salts. and the third. magnetic oxide. (Fell 04), which is black, and is re- garded as a compound of the other two. It is formed when iron is heat- ed in air or in oxygen.

The most important ferrous salts of iron are the carbonate, the sul- phate. the phosphate and the silic- ate. The peroxide of iron or ferric oxide is known as Rouge or Crocus of Mars. It is used for i)011-Shin! glass and jewellery, etc. The im- portant ferric salts of iron are the
