To beat the contract West must win the club return at trick two with the queen of clubs. East must then overtake the queen with the king and return a club for West to ruff.

This defense is not as hard as it seems. West should assume de- clarcr has either the king of dia- monds or king of clubs for his four spade bid. South is far more likely to have the diamond king, a known value opposite the dia- mond bid. than the club king. an unknown value.

As further evidence there is, the fact South did not play the king on the club return by East. the simplest reason for which might be that he didn't have it.

if West wins with the ace and returns the queen It is not at all difficult for East to read the situation and overtake with the king. if west had more than two clubs it would make no sense for him to win the first club lead with the ace instead of the queen. Hence. the A-Q play must signify a doublelon.
