Curious Circumstance.

his folly preyed upon his mind. His cons- cience was always upbrading him. Years after he settled in Derby, and after a short acquaintance with a woman of suitable age, got married. Very soon after he saw his wife combing her hair, and inquired how she got that scar that disfigured her head. She replied: ‘‘Some wretch of a soldier had once nearly killed her with a stone, but if ever she caught that man she would pay him off.” It is not recorded how she punished her husband when he confessed, or how great was his relief when the haunting thought of a wanton murder was removed from his mind. He was one of the five troopers who rode under the oak where Charles was hidden at Bosecabel. From this soldier was descended Mr. Hutton, a well-known antiquary of Derby, who related the above.

An Atrocious Murder.

A most atrocious parricide occurred at Lawrenceville, Ind., last week. The victim was a laboring man named Joseph Kungler. He had had trouble with his wife, and sued for a divorce, but yet was livmg in the same house with her. On the night of the mur- der he was down town, and in his absence the wife persuaded their son, who is thirteen years old, to kill him on his return. He promised to do so, and, loading a gun, lay in wait for his father. When the latter came near him, the boy shot him through the back of the head. He fell, mortally wounded, and crying for help. The mother took the gun and laid it by him, he being | still alive and calling for help. The mother and son then retreated, but could not sleep, and finally arose, and, cooking supper, ate it, and thus spent the night, all the time hearing the moans and pleadings of the dy- ing husband and father.

{In the morning the neighbors found Kungler still alive and lying in a pool of blood, but unable to speak. The wife was at work, paying no attention to him. She said he had committed the act himself. After he died, the Coroner investigated the case, and found what she said could not be true. The boy was then accused of having committed the deed, finally confessed the whole affair, and said his mother had been urging him to the act for a year. Both parties are under arrest. The excitement in the town and surrounding country is in- tense.

Tryon Meeting.

The following resolution wasmoved by Mr. Alexahder Howatt, seconded by John Walker and others, and passed unanimous- _ly—only four dissenting voices :—

Whereas, The last General Election, though settling unequivocally the School Question, has, on account of the prominence of said ques- tion before the electors at the polls, resulted in the return to Parliament of an element preju-

| dicial to the best interests of the country ;

and

Whervas, The Legislature then elected, at their first session, repealed, unasked, the Sta- tute Labor Act; and passed an unnecessary, unjust and inopportune Assessment Act, and unfair and unworkable Public Schools’ Act, and a Registration of Voters’ Act, which, by

iving indirectly all the protection the quali- tied voters or property holders require from the franchise, opens the way for an advanta geous change in our Constitution, viz: the abolition of the Legislative Council :

Therefore Resolved, That, in the opinion of this meeting, the interests of the country de mand an immediate Dissolution of the House of Assembly, and that His Honor the Lieutene ant Governor should dissolve the same.

The Montreal ‘: Herald” of Tuesday,has the following remarks on the prospects of Canadian trade during the coming year :— There are, we consider, indications, that 1878 will bring for us an improved condi- tion of mercantile affairs, and that the dark cloud which has so long overshadowed the commercial horizon, will, at last, begin to break and shew us at least a portion of that silver lining which is popularly supposed te lie concealed in every cloud. Though failures, and some of them of a character that cannot be claimed as anything but fra- dulent, are, unhappily still too common in all branches of trade, they are in the main the outcome of the long credit system which prevailed in times of wild and exciting pros- perity, but which is now, to a great’extent, dying out, partly owing to the good sense of the business community, who were not slow in perceiving where a great portion of the evil lay, and partly owing to the necessities of the times, which have made a system of shorter credit, if not a cash basis, an actual necessity. Recent failures then may be regarded as the elimination of the decayed and decaying leaves from the plant, which will bloom with renewed vigour when their incumberance. Though trace and commerce are, at peat, unusu-

Egypt had a Geographical Society, but the Khedive did not pay the annual subsidy of $2,000 which he promised, and the concern had to sell its library anc. furniture to satisfy its creditors. Its last geographical exploit, there- fore, was up Salt River.

Sharks abound on the Australian Coast. At the Brighton Station over 2,000 sharks were produced, and only one, a “‘ tiger” shark, ex- ceeded five feet in length.

DvrinG 1876, 198,771 Italians immigrated to America. According to the statistics, 80,000 of this grand total are set down as temporary tourists, the rest as permanent settlers.

Dr. Bowley, the rector of Willey and Barrow, England, while preaching at Willey Church on the 11th inst., money stopped and fell down dead in the pulpit. Dr. Bowley had just entered his eighty-second year.

Dvurtne the gale on the English coasts on the 15th, 47 lives were lost, 34 vessels were in collision, 25 were driven ashore, six were sunk, and 55 put back with loss of anchors and chains. The loss of property is estim- ‘ated at £200,000.
