Che German Emperor has received a re turn visit from his Austrian brother, who met with a hearty welcome from the Prus- , and has been to Strasburg to open a in the conquered city. The Empress went with him and charmed the hearts of the people. Strange to say, no political jisunderstandings have arisen in France in consequence of this visit. Ut other foreign events none seem to call for comment the threatened reiurn of Queen Natalie to Servis. The ex-King, tuding that the regents would not oppose her coming to Belgrade tu see her son, on -he ground that if they did so popular ris- ings would ensue, has dictated the terms on which she may come. ‘The Queen has, however, declined to be bound by his con- ditions, and, Russian-like, is biding her time.

* The following account of the Bagpipes will not, I fear, commend itself to many of the members of the Caledonian Club, but it is too good to be suppressed. I| quote from an American writer: ‘In its native land, where the bagpipe can echo its music among the crags and peaks, the effect may be enchanting. The struggle between a musician and his bagpipe is to us a thrilling sight. The Scot puts his left arm about the waist of the instrument, endeavoring to catch an under ‘holt.’ The fellow, when he is coupled to the machine, fairly bristles with tubes, nozzles, and pipes, which point over his shoulders, from under his arms, and from all available points. When everything is ready he looks up .nd seems to take a parting glance at the sun, the leaves, the birds, and the beautiful things of nature. Then he shuts his eyes and the struggle begins. He pumps with his arms, works his knees, heaves his chest, and humps his back. After he has been at this awhile, a doleful sound begins to issue from one of the tubes. A pipe catches the disorder. Then anozzie breaks out, and all nature becomes startled and pained. He puts on more steam, throws the wind into another flue, and there is a fresh out- break of noise. Heworks the keys, and squeezes the animal im another locality. It has only been ten minutes since he began

work, still in this short space of time he has succeeded in turning loose eleven different noises. Some people claim that

actual tunes can be played on a bagpipe. We never heard one play anything wecould recognize as having heard before—unless it was a piece similar to one that had been played on some other bagpipe. When a bagpipe is all in motion, from the tube that makes the busy-bee buzzing “nuise, to the flue that keeps running the scale from both ends at the same time, then the musician’s work is only half done. He has got to get ali the wind out of the machine and stop it in some way. We have never known less than half an hour's work to silence a full- grown, healthy bagpipe after it had once got to hvoting tts best, and eren then it was liab'e to break out in 80me spot that hadn’t been plugged up, and compel the poor, tired player wo tackie it again.” . * +

+ It is always pleasing to be able to record the advancement in life of natives of our province, and it is with sincere pleasure that I 4m able to announce that the Bishop

of Chester has conferred the valuable liv- ing of New Brighton upon the Rev. Charles Hylton Stewart, son of the late William Stewart, of Glen Stewart, and nephew of Theophilus Stewart, of this

city. A Loaden newspaper, in referring to the appointment, says that “‘ Mr. Stewart has been the able and well-known precentor decade, working in hearty co-operation with Dr. Bridge, the organist, and has done much to make the Cathedral service at Chester as near perfection as possible. Mr. Stewart was organist of Holy Trinity, Vauxhall Bridge, at sixteen, and a year later de- puty organist of Chichester Cathedral. He went to Cambridge, where he held a mu- sical scholarship, and graduated from St. Catherine’s College, in 1873. He founded the Cambridge Musical Society, and, for two years after he took his degree, was or- ganist of Chicester Cathedral. In 1875, he was admitted to the diaconate by Bishop Piers C. Claughton, acting for the Bishop of Rochester. and licensed to the curacy of Pebmarsh, where he had such influence with the rector, the Hon. and Rev. E. Grimston, that he got him to restore the church. At Pebmarsh. Mr. Stew- art attracted the attention of the late Canon Tarver, who was a_ neighbor- ing rector, and, through his influence he was appointed precentor of Chester, where, as I have said, he has im- mensely improved the services, thoroughly established the triennial festival, and been very popular. He had the entire confi- dence of Dean Howson, but since his death and that of Canon Tarver, it is said that the Chapter, though most of them of his theological opinions, have not quite so thoroughly appreciated the precent#t’s

practical supremacy of the cathedral. His organizing powers were wonderfully

brought out at the enthronization of the Bishop. It must be a great wrench to him to leave the cathedral—he retused to leave it when the late Duchess of Westminster urged him to go to Eton—but I shall be surprised if he does not make his mark at New Brighton. It goes without saying that he will have good services, but he will prove himself an excellent parish. priest, and he is far from an ordirary preacher.” *

Spoiling for a Fight,

Sir,—The political crank who runs the Grit news mill at Souris has been spoiling for a fight for some time back. It will be strange if some one does not tread upon his coat tail before long—just to oblige him. His latest attack is upon what he calls a ‘**polemic.”” When he evidentiy does not know the meaning of the word *‘ polemic” it is not hard to imagine the kind of idictic rubbish in which he indulges in discussing his subject. There is one lie, however, which he has the cheek to repeat, to which, perhaps, it would be as well to refer. Is it not a fact, he asks, that there was collusion among fthe Conservatives in keeping back the bounty to the fishermen. He and other falsifiers may as well be told, once for all, that there was no such collusion on the part of the Conservatives. Can the Grits of the place truthfully say as much? Prob- ably some of them know. Let the Souris Annanias of the Patrio keep cool, else he may be as suddenly snuff- ed out axwhe was when he tackled Mr. Foley on a former occasion. Yours, &c., McD. Bruin lately paid a cursory visit to the primeval forest range in the near vicinity of Chepstow, doing serious damage to the sheepiold and innocent lamb, enjoying mutton chop, The temporary raiding visit was brought to a close on the serene night of Thursday, 5th inst., by the unerring aim of Mr. William Pope, who came to close quarters with our native lion. Mr. Pope deserves credit for his pluck, and shows that Chepstow boys dread not danger. The cubs escaped and a posse are in pursuit.
