Tue Patriot declares that Tae Examisen hae made a break down in its defence of the Senate’s rejection of the bill granting $300,000 to the Manitoba Government out of the school fuods of the Province. What are the facts? When Of Manitoba was created, in 1870, a certain portion of the public lands within ite bounds was set apart for the support of schools, these lands to be sold from time to time as occasion offered to form a fund, of which the Federal government was to be the trusted custodian, and pay the interest thereon to Manitoba. Why was the Dominion Government made

the custodian of this fund? SHvidently because it was feltthat it would be safer under the control of the Dominion author- ities than under the control of the Pro- vincial authorities. The fund is one to be taken care of,—the annual interest only to be paid to the Government of Manitoba for the epecial purpose of supporting the schools. But the present Government of Canada, false tothe trust, proposed ty give $300,000 outof the fund to the Greenway administration on the eve of a provincial election ; and the Senate, in the execution of its duty, prevented the pay- ment of the money.

The Manitoba School Fund, held in trust by the Government of Canada, now amounts, it is said, to about $500,000. At three per cent interest, this capital sum is now yitlding $15,000 a year. This latter is the amount that the Dominion ought to pay to the Goveroment of Manitoba—not $30%,000. The McKenzie Governmeat voted out of the fand $10,000 a year for two years, and the McDonald administra. tion granted $15,000 a year fortwo yeara. These votes were in accordance with the provisions of the trust, aud were perfectly

legitimate and justifiable. But the Laurier Government proposed to pay $300,000.00 in one year,

pe reducing the present capital from $500,000 vielding $15,006 a year, ta §200,< | 000 yielding $6000! The attempted breach of trust and robbery of the Mani- toba Schools fund, which the Senate pre- vented, is apparent; and we leave an intel ligent public to judge whether or not Tue Examiner has, as the Patriot declares * made a breakdown ” in this regard. THE COLLEGIATE AND COLLEGE SCHOOLS AT WINDSOR.

At the opening of the bi-ennial session of the Synod on Friday last there were present 83 clerical delegates and 60 lay delegates. The Rev. W.J, Ancient was ‘ re-elected Clerical Secretary, and the R-v. W. Charles Wilson wae elected Assistant Clerical Secretary. Bishop Courtney de- hvered a lengthy acd powerful charge We quote the following concerning the educational institutions of the Church at Windsor :

KING’S COLLEGE.

King’s College presents much the same charucteristics as those of recent years. The board of governors was eolarged not long ago under powers obtained from the local legislature, it being hoped by the originator of the scheme thatall purts of the Maritime Provinces being represented, interest, in the university would be corree- pondingly increased. It bas been found, however, that this many members of the board could not possibly meet frequently, aud therefore an executive committee was appointed, to which was entrusted the carry ing on of affare; the con-«qneuce being that little interest was felt by avy mem bers who were not on the executive committce, and a full meeting of that board has only taken place annually, on the evening be- fore the encenia.

Mr. Butler, the professor of engineering, who bas served faithfully and tfliciently for seventeen years, leftat the beginuing of the last college year, having been appoint- ed to a like position in the Royal Military College, Kingston; and his place was filled by the election of Mr. Karl Weatherbe, a past student, of great ability, who is doing good work and gives promiseof being an admirable and euccesefu! professor. The president and staff have labored diligently to do their duty is every way to the students entrusted w their care, and deserve our hear'y acknowledgement of their zeal and ability; while the Lonorery treasurer, Mr. Johu Y. Payzact, ‘s always keenly interested in dong al! iu n's power to bring the finances of the college :nlo a patisfactory condition. The income would be largely increased if the clergy did their duty by taking the annual co'lection appointed by the syvod.
