Senator Burke Of Nild.Dies

ator Vincent P. Burke died here Saturday at the age of 75. He had been ill for two years.

He was appointed to the Sen- ate in 1950 when Newfoundland entered Confederation. His widow and a daughter survive.

Senator Burke was born at St. Jacques. Nfld. One of Newfound- iund's most prominent education- ists, lie was principal of Torbay high school and superintendent of Roman Catholic schools before becoming deputy minister of ad- ucation in 1920. He held the lat- ter post for seven years.

He played a leading part in the founding of Newfoundland Mem- orial University ln 1925 and was chairman of its board of trustees until 1950.

back from Asia with a prize elec- tion-year headache for President Eisenhower.

Nixon found, on his 45.000-mile world tour, that the United States may have to spend more money and take is stronger hand in Asian affairs to prevent further Communist gains.

This is sad news for an admin- istration trying to pare expendi- tures before next. November's im- portant congressional elections.

But. Nixon brought word, for example, that a far-reaching de- cision may have to be made. in order to save Indo-China. gate- way to rich southeast Asia-the

really important goal of Com- munist military aggression in Asia.

The choice, which may have to be made before next November. is this: whether to go all-out in backing the French. with more arms and possibly even military forces, in order to keep them in their bitter seven years' war or whether to support growing Paris demands for a Korean-style nego- tiated truce. This would risk los- lng the peninsula politically to the Communists.

ABOARD GOTHIC, (Reuters)- Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh cast. floral gnrlnndg into the Pacific Sunday in the traditional South Seas gesture of farewell. as they left the Tonga islands and headed for New Zea- land.

As the Gothic sailed away. Queen Salote, six-foot-three queen of the Pacific island group, stood in an open launch and waved fare- well from the harbor entrance.

After she could no longer see the Queen and duke waving back. she could hear the Gothic'a band playing "Auld Lang Syne".

The farewells ended a "picnic- styie" week-end for tiie royal cou- ple, during which formalities were held to an absolute minimum.

Once the ceremony of the first few hours was over. the Queen and duke were able to go swim- ming. play hearh cricket and take pictures.

Sunday morning Elizabeth took a stroll in the royal palace grounds-and saw it tortoise said to have been given to the king of Tonga by Captain James Cook, British explorer who sailed these waters from 1773 to i'lT7. It was he who gave the islands their popular name. the Friendly ls- lands.

The tortoise. who holds a chief's rank in the Tongan hierarchy, is probably about 200 years old.

JACKSON. Mich.. (AP)-It was a little after nine l3- m.. Saturday when these men barged rght into our house. one of them held a gun and the others had knives.

They told us no one would be hurt and then proceeded to run- sack the house.

All we could do was sit there.

My husband (Joseph Watts), (Helen) Miss I-Ielen Gilbert. Dun (Don Peck), Mary (Mary Bober), l4. a. baby sitter and I couidnt believe it.

They took three of Joe's suits. three pairs of his shoes. even the ones he was wearing. and one of his shirts. Don's Cadillac was parked outside, full of gas. It was just like an invitation for them.

They ordered Helen and me into the Mir.

They promised that we wouldn't be hurt. Then they tied the others after collecting about 330 from all of us.

The man named Dowling (Rob- ert Dowling) was driving. I sat in front with him and another man. Helen was in the back seat with the other three.

We headed south at about 70 or 80 miles an hour.

We ran into the first roadblock nbout l5 miics from home but they saw it in time and backtracked to the first side road. Then Helen and I really were scarred.

We were in constant fear-not of the convicts-but we were afraid a state police car might

come along and open fire. Then. too, we thought we might get in trouble for helping tiiem escape because we WOT! sort of giving them directions when they asked us.

From then on it was just one sct of back roads after another.

We finally ran out of gas. There was a. filling station open and we pulled in. '

"You'll be okay if you don't make a. sound." they told us. and we kept quiet.

We reached Detroit about 6:20 A. M. We stopped at. Wyoming and Joy Roads on the northwest side of the city. There was a consulta- tion and two of thorn got. out.

Then the other three left. but not before they gave us 32 to use for for; and phone calls. They told us not to turn in an alarm for at least is minutes.
