PEARLS. Why There Are No Very Ancient Spee mens Now In Existence. According to M. Berthelot, the celebrat- ed scientist historian, there are no very ancient pearls in existence, for which a sufiicient reason is found in the fact that pearls, unlike precious stones, are destruc- able. They discolor and disintegrate. The pearl is not mentioned by Homer or Herod- It begins to appear in

Not a great deal is known about the value attrib- uted by the ancients to particular pearls. fhe one that Cleopatra drank was valued st $200,000 modern money. The Romans appreciated the pearl, and after the growth of luxury began to have its usual effect in diminishing the birth tate, one of the laws against celibacy pro vided that no childless woman or spinster should wear pearls under the age of 55. Pearis are prominent in the royal toilets of Europe. Catherine de Medicis was said to have the finest pearls in Europe. When she married Henri, duc d’Orleans, Francis I presented to her two great pearls weigh- ing five grams each. She afterward pre- sented these to Marie Stuart, who, while queen of France, had them set in the parures familiar in her portraits. At that queen's fall the pearls were captured by Morton and sent to London. Catherine in- structed her embassador to buy them, but

the Dead Letter Office.

One of the queerest ‘‘institutions’’ of the national capital is the annual clearance sale of the dead letter office, in which a vast accumulation of articles gone astray in the mails is sold to the highest bidders. The auction house where it is held is continually crowded with excited men, women and children, and beside it the bargain counters dur- ing the holidays are as havens of rest, for when Uncle Sam goes intothe junk- shop business great things are expect- ed. As in the church fair raffle, you pay a small amount of money and trust to luck to get back more than its value. The articles, previously listed in a wholesale sort of way, are tied up in bundles of from three toa half dozen and ‘‘auctioned’’ for what they will bring, the average bids ranging between 10 cents and a dollar.

Nobody is permitted to examine the goods before purchasing, and no money is refunded to the dissatisfied. Every- body hopes to pull a genuine plum from the pie in the shape of a diamond ring, # silk dress pattern or a silver teapot, and although comparative blanks are the rule, there is always the possibility of a prize. For example, the auctioneer holds up one of these odd shaped bun- dles, listed ‘‘pictures, underwear, mu- sic, cigars.’? Going—going—gone—for 90 cents to a dapper young gentleman who was caught by the word ‘‘cigar.’’ He opens it on the sport—an unwise thing to do if one objects to good natured ridicule—and this is what he finds: Six cigars, broken into bits with so strong an odor that one wonders how a sledge hammer could have done it; underwear —a female 10 cent ‘‘jersey;’’ pictures— a collection of newspaper cuts designed for amusement of some small child. The lot would be dear at a quarter and is of no use to the buyer.

In the dead letter office proper—that charnel house which swallows nearly half a million missives every month—it is positively harrowing. More than 40 bushels of photographs have accumu- lated there, awaiting the annual crema- tion. There are tresses of hair enough to stuff a dozen mattresses, grandmoth- ers’ silver locks and babies’ golden curls, many no doubt cut from dead brows, and small sums of money which poor workmen send home to feed their wives and little ones, and servant girls save from their scanty wages for needy par- ents—gone to Uncie Sam/’s rich purse, not because the United States wants it, but because the senders’ writing or or- thography was beyond mortal ken. It is hard to realize that in this land of schools, at the close of the nineteenth century, there are so many people so ignorant or so careless as to send several millions of letters a year without stamps or addresses or with addresses which no man can make out. People seem to be so intent on what goes into the letters that they forget all about the superscrip-

tion. It is estimated that $4,500,090 in drafts and $80,000,000 in cash is receiv- ed every year through dead letters. —In- dianapolis Journal.

The Expense and Profits of Travel on English Railway Lines.

How many people who travel in trains ever think of the cost of running them? It will probably surprise most people who have traveled from London to Ed- inburgh to know that every mile of the journey costs the railway company over half acrown. The cost of the whole journey from the English to the Scotch capital is £50.

The average cost of running a train in England is 2s. 7d. per mile, so that, the fare being reckoned at 1d. per mile,

eacii mile is run at a loss. ‘here are few trains, however, that do not carry more than this number of passengers, and many of them carry the number doubled many times over. It is neces- sary frequently to run trains that do not pay—usually in thinly inhabited coun- try districts—but for every train run at aloss probably 100 are run at an enor- mous profit.

Take, for instance, the journey from London to Edinburgh, which costs the railway company £50. The average number of ‘‘through’’ passengers in these trains is probably 60, in which case the total fares would be nearly £100—a clear gain of nearly £50. When it is remembered that these trains run several times a day, and every day in the year, it will be understood what an enormous reyenue a single line yields in the course of 12 months. Supposing the average number of passengers te be 60, the midnight train from London to Ed- inburgh yields over £20,000 for divi- dend in a year!

The longest railway journey in the United Kingdom would probably be from Penzance, in Cornwall, to Thurso, in the north of Scotland, a distance of over 1,000 miles. <A train running be- tween these two places would exhaust an ordinary clerk’s salary for a whole year, the cost being no less than £138. —London Tit-Bits.

A FREAK AMONG FLOWERS.

The Venus Flytrap and Ita Almost Hu- man Action.

Now and again, in exploring American woods and swamps, botanists have come across floral curiosities that almost bridge over the great gulf that divides the animal and vegetable kingdoms. One of these, to be met with nowhere in the world save in North Carolina, is scientifically classified as Dioncea muscipula, but is colloquially known as ‘‘ Venus’ fiytrap.”’

In appearance the extraordinary plant is pretty, but unassuming, the leafless flower stem running from six to eight inches in height and surmounted by a cluster of five petaled blossoms, rising erect like a rosettelike bed of leaves. It is in the edge of the leaves that the death dealing apparatus is set, for this modest little plant, which is so delicate that it dies oa injury to root or stem, sus- ains its life by feeding upon the unw insects that chance to alight upon “tte leaves, enticing them to their destruction by exuding from the edges of its fatal traps a viscous fluid, somewhat resembling honey.

The traps consist of two soft, velvety leaves, fringed with delicate bristles and hinged together on one side. The unsus- pecting fly, lured by the honey, alights on these bristles in anticipation of a feast, but at the first touch of its feet the hinges close, the two leaves come together, the bristles interlock, and the hapless insect is imprisoned in ® cell from which escape is impossible.

Under the stimulus of the victim’s struggles the tiny glands with which the inner walls of the trap are furnished pour forth a —ae which Darwin analyzed as a vegetable gasiric juice, resembli that which insures poten in ania life. Under the influence of this curious

fluid the fly is actually digested alive, and, its juices being extracted, the trapdoors are reopened and the skeleton 4s flung out.

The scientists declare that the plant un- questionably lives upon the juices of its victims, but one or two expert florists take exception to this statQent. It is worthy of note that, although the habit of the plant is carnivorous, experiments have proved that it lives longer and thrives bet- ter when so inclosed that no insects can reach it, a superabundance of its favorite dict apparently rendering it even more del- icate than it is by nature. Megrim,

Megrim, or migraine, is a species of nervous headache affecting only one side of or one defined spot on the head—the fore- head and temple—and is generally the re- sult of debility. It isa periodic disease, appearing and disappearing at irregular intervals, and may be induced by the same causes as give rise to hysteria and aguce. The immediate attack of megrim headache may be relieved by the application of flan- nel or sponge, soaked in hot water, or by the continuous application of ice over the part. The affection, which is often a very painful one, is likely to be removed by the improvement of the general health and strength, by good diet, air and exercise, and by the use of bark iron and other tonics. A large dose of quinine—five or six grains —repeated two or three times in the course of 24 hours will generally cut short an at- tack of megrim.—New York Ledger.

Particularly Interesting to Farmers It is now thirty years or more since we entered into Nursery and Market Gardening. At that time there was not the competition that there is to-day, and it required less enterprise ani pusb to make a dollar then, than it now does to make 25c, Naturally we made many mistakes, we had etudied the theory pretty well, but when it came down to practical work, we found with all our ‘book learning” that we made some miserable failures. Bui then again in other departments we made some splendid hits, or in other words, we hit upon the right condition of things and made a success, or as we cdiled it “a hit of it.” Encouraged by our success, and forewarned by our mistakes, we plodded on. One of the great difficul- ties to contend with was the quality of seeds. To procure good reliable seeds, was to (in most cases) to insure succes’, allother conditions properly attended to, but with inferior seeds all our en- deavors proved fruitless. We sent trial orders of seeds to most all the principal Seedsmen (at that time in England United States and Canada) with varied results, but for the last twenty years we have imported our seeds from the same firm and do attribute a large part ofour success as Market Gardeneis and Seedsmen, to the fact, that the seeds have been pure and reliable. We commenced this business growing and importing seeds to the amount consider- ed necessary for our own planting After afew years our success in this line became so marked, that our friends and neighbors beseeched us to give, lend, or sell them a few. Their solicita— tions became so frequent. that like the man epoken of in Scristure, we ex- claimed as of old, “Who is our neighbor?” The outcome of it all was, that we found ourselves pushed out. Ab! compelled to go into the seed busi- ness,
