LONDON. April 9--(CP) -- A rush of questions in the House

of Commons reflected Britain's growing concern today over aims of the United Nations in Korea and Gen. Douglas MacArthur's recent pi nouncements.

One of eight written questions --which the government may an- swer Wednesday-was by Labor member D. L. Donneliy who ask- ed if Britain would undertake talks with the United States and U. N. members to achieve "more effective control of the supreme commander of the U. N. forces in Tokyo."

Demand Directive

Much of the press in Britain. and Western Europe too. raised demands. that action be taken in the United Nations to give Mac- Arthur a clear policy directive.

In Paris. a French Foreign Of- fice spokesman said the French Government is opposed for politi- cal reasons to MacArthur's pro-

posal that Nationalist Chiang Kai-Shek's Chinese troops be used and that Manchuria be bombed.

The chief fear. both in Brltal and France. is that the war i Korea might be rolled into an all-out Far East war, diverting Western military strength from Europe--which they regarded as the decisive theatre.

But a Foreign Office spokes- man at a press conference said:

"I can officially state that we have not lodged any formal or isolated protest on this matter with the United States."

Other sources said. however. that Britain wmld-wotceustrong protests about Mat-Arthur's re- cent activities in the privacy of talks at Washington among the 14 countries interested directly in Korean strategy. The spokesman said British and American "ob- jectives remain the same", in Ko- rea. He said there is no "wide divergence” of views on a pro- posed declaration of U. N. aims.

At the Conservative convention of Fifth Kingls, held yesterday at the Georgetown Hail, Mr. Reid Under- hay. farmer. of Bay Fortune. was chosen as Councillor. and Mr. Tem- pie MacDonald, farmer. Ge'orge- town Royalty, was chosen as As- semblyman.

Mr. Ernest Griffin, fisherman. of Sturgeon was also nominated for Councillor. but was defeated on the ballot by Mr. Underhay 31-13.

Howe Maiies Reply To Motion By George Drew

OTTAWA. April 9 - (CF) - Trade Minister Howe ioid the Commons tonight. on the eve of the Federal budget. that the Gov- ernment is not going to put. gen- eral price controls into effect HOW.

The Minister. stepping into a debate on living costs and in- flation, said the greatest contri- bution Canadians can make against inflation is to avoid panic buying and to produce mdrc goods.

"The Government is not going to put into effect controls that would do more harm than good," Mr. Howe said in response to a series of Opposition demands for government action to halt. the rise in the cost of living.

He spoke in an all-day discus- sion on a Progressive Conserva- tive motion of non-confidence in the Government because of higher living costs.

The motion of George Drew, Progressive Conservative leader, called for "imnfediate considera- tion" by the Government to the "adoption of appropriate measures to hold down the cost of living and halt inflation.

Presented as the Government moved to go into committee of supply to study 1951-52 expendi- ture estimates. the motion drew support from the C.C.F. and So- cial Credit Parties.

Mr. Howe told the House the swift rise in the Government's cost-of-living index up to March 1 had been virtually halted dur- ing March.

City will Awaii Disposition Of Meier Dispuie

The parking meters will not be put. into operation until the pres- ent dispute between the two auto- matic mcter companies regarding the infringement of patents has been settled. it was decided last night at the monthly meeting of the City Council.

Councillor C. M. Cox. chairman of the street Committee. brought up the matter of the dispute between the Twin Automatic Meter Comp- any and the Dual Automatic Comp- any. The latter company has charg- ed the Twin Automatic Company with infringing upon its patents and plans to bring a lawsuit against the company. The twin automatics were installed here.

Councillor Cox stated that first. word he had of the dispute was a letter from a firm of lawyers in Toronto telling him that action was being taken for infringements of patents.

He stated that he wrote to the President of the Twin Automatic Company and received a reply to the effect that that company was the first to provide competition to the rival firm who apparently could not stand it.

Sends Indemnity

The president assured Mr. Cox that the City would not become in- volved and sent an indemnity to Mr. Cox to safeguard any possible involvement. '

City Recorder K. M. Martin did not think the City would become involved but he advised that the matter be left standing until the situation was clarified. He stated that if the meters were used and the City became involved the con- sequences might be severe.

To Visit Canadian Troops At Ft. Lewis

OTTAWA. April 0 - (CF) Canadians will hear the bad news about their 1951-52 taxes tomorrow night.

Finance Minister Abbott. intro- ducing his budget in the Commons is expected to announce s. heavier tax burden, possibly through the imposition of new taxes and a series of increases in existing levies.

Mr. Abbott and other govern- ment spokesmen already have made it clear that higher taxes are necessary io help finance the country's expanding defence pro- gram.

The Finance Minister will be- gin his budget apeech to the Com- mons at. 8 pm. EST. Until then. by custom. the contents remain a state secret. -

However, there has been the customary flow of pre-budget speculation about what it will do to the public pocketbook - whe- ther iihe additional revenue will come out of luxury goods or! whe- thcr the government will hit the taxpayer in the crucial personal income tax brackets.

Price Controls Possible

Another question is whether the government. with public demands for price controls quickly build- also announce through the budget. that ii. is go- ing to do something in that field to combat the high cost of living.

Mr. Aibbott told the Commons last week. in an interjection on the living-costs problem, that. he

would be discussing it in his budget speech ' . This will be Canadas third

budget within little more than a year. Mr. Abbott brought down his annual budget last spring and supplemented it with ?a ”baby budget" during the special session of Parliisment last fall.

The company led by Capt. Owen Brown of Calgary met. enemy fire late Sunday as it occupied a 3.- 000-foot mountain 4.000 yards north of the parallel. After a brief fight in which the Chinese used one automatic weapon and several rifles, the enemy withdrew to a. mountain immediately to the north.

LONDON. April 10 -(Tuesday) -(Reuters)- Britain is withdraw- ing one of her two brigades in Korea for a rest, and replacing it. with fresh troops. the War Of- iice announced today.

The 27th Infantry Brigade. in the thick of the Korean fighting since arriving there in August of 1950. will be relieved by the 28th Brigade. The 27th will be sent back to Hong Kong for a rest.

The announcement said that the lst Battalion-s of the King's Own Scottish Borderers and King's Shropshire Light. infantry will re- lieve the 1st Battalions of the Argyll and Sutherland Highland- ers and the Middlescx Regiment respectively.

The 27th was foamed from troops ailrea-dy stationed in Hong Kong in the first months of the Korean campaign. It also con- . iains a number of Austrian troops.

Truman Reiecis Drastic Action In MacArthur Case

WASHINGTON. April it - (AP) - President Truman was reported today to have ruled out any action against; Gen. Douglas MacArthur that would affect MscArthur's stat- us as supreme command in the Far East.

The possibility remained that Truman might publicly or private- ly rebuke the General for his open split with the administration-and with United Nations policies-over the conduct of the war with the Chinese Communists.

MacArthur set off an interna- tional uproar by coming out last week in favor of using Chinese Na- tionalist forces to open a "second front." against the Reds.

Many Republicans strongly back- ed the General's stand. But from US. Allies abroad. there were sharp protests against any spread- ing of the Korean war. ' I
