The October 6 meeting of the natural History Society was chaired by vice—president Dan McAskill and was an enjoyable beginning to a new sea— . son of meetings. In her absence, president Rosemary Curley was appointed to be the NHS representative on the Natural History Museum Advisory Com— mittee, formed to spur the government on to action.

Patrick Wooton asked the Society for support of his plans to protect the Murray Harbour area. His group is seeking to conserve the scenery, preserve wildlife and natural resources, and improve waterways. They would like a special planning order to accomplish this. Diane Griffin suggested that the area may qualify as a National Nature Viewpoint as designated by the Canadian Nature Federation — this offers no protection but does indicate just how valuable an area is. The members supported the proposal.

A motion was carried to co—sponsor the annaul Canadian Nature Federation meeting in 1989. That year is the 100th anniversary of the Natural History Society, the 20th anniversary of the new Society and the 10th anniversary of the Island Nature Trust. The Nature Trust will be the other sponsor, and mid—June is the tentative date. The meeting includes a full day of seminars, pre—and—post—conference field trips,

a banquet and a dance. Nature Canada bookshop moves in and it should be a lot of fun.

Dan will be selling Nature Canada Calendars and Christmas cards as usual this year, and will also be working as the NHS rep to the new Wildlife and Tourism Committee.

The suggested dates for the Christmas Bird Counts, continuing the celebration of Wildlife '87, are Dec. 19 at the National Park; Dec. 27 in Hillsborough, to correspond with the National Birdwatching Weekend; . and Jan. 2 for the Montague count.

Kathleen Blanchard of the Atlantic Center for the Environment and the Quebec-Labrador Foundation will be the guest speaker at the Nov. 2 NHS meeting. She will speak on the Center's education program.

Katherine Clough, NHS member and owner of Headland Nature Tours Ltd., will be the guest speaker at the Dec. 1 meeting.

If you're interested in feeding birds in the winter, you'll want to circle the following two dates on your calendar. On Nov. 10, a workshop will be held at the Farm Centre on building bird feeders. A slide show on the Birds of Christmas will be shown - contact Dan for exact time of the workshop.

And November 21 is the Second Annual Island Nature Trust Seed Sale. This year the bags of sunflower seeds will feature an original draw— . u\A ing by Lindee Climo, who will be on hand in WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS Charlottetown to autograph the drawing. The sale £391//

is scheduled for the Farmers' Market, but you can call the Nature Trust office at 892—7513 for further information. Birdfeeding books, bird guides and tapes will also be sold in Charlottetown. Connie Ings (838-2276) is handling the Montague sale, and Lorne MacDougall will be in charge in Alberton and Summerside. The seed will cost $25 for a 50 lb. bag and $15 for a 25 lb. ba
