A panel discussion with Mrs. Malcolm Macbeod as chairman discussed the following topics "World Health Organizations. Un- ited Nations Economic Social and

rcuiiural Organizations. Food and Agriculture Organizations and the Universal Declaration of Human nights after which an open dis- cussion of the United Nations took place. A group discussion compris- liig of six groups each with a chair- man and secretary discussed local community problems. Mr. Walter R. Shaw. Deputy M.ln- isier of Agriculture. also sdcirened the afternoon session of the Wom- ch's Institute choosing for his theme "Women in Agriculture." During his speech Mr. Bhaw stren- ed the importance of conservation of soil stating that it is a vital problem that should be studied more fully. Making reference to women in agriculture in relation to conservation he advised them to apply proper usage of conservation methods in their own farm and districts. which he added will in- evitably produce higher efficiency and make Canada one of the great- est countries in the world.

Following his speech Mrs. Harold Laird expressed her appreciation on bchalf of the members to Mr. Shaw

Y's MEN'S MEETING The Y's Men's Club held their weekly meeting last. evening with the chairman. Clarence MacGinn and co-chairman Windsor Campbell. SPECIAL SERVICE -A very impressive and inspiring service was held in Bl-eadalbane United Church on Sunday evening, March 23rd when the guest speaker, Mr. Samuel Gillespie. based his ad- dress on Romans 1:! chapter, verse l2. TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS - Two minor traffic accidents occurred yesterday in the city after a lull oi four days. The first happened when a car backing out on the west side of Queen Street collided with a car travelling south on the same street. Both cars sustainedpslight damage. A car going east on Euston Street, was struck by another travelling in the same direction when the latter made a left hand turn towards Upper Prince Street. The first alitomblle experienced damage to the left rear fender, bumper, and tail light.

New Aircraft For "Flying farmer"

Mr. glitch Woodside. the local "Piying 1"ariner" associated with Paul's plying service. purchased an almost new Fleet Canuck air- craft this week in Halifax. The new plane is s brightly paintcd. high wing monoplane with an 85-horse- power engine and will seat two.

Accompanied by his wide, Mr.i Woodalde left Wednesday by Marl-l time central Airways for Haiifaxf to pick up the ship. After tho: papers were signed they both climbed aboard the new plane and headed for their home tarmac where they touched down in a per- fect three point landing. ,

Carrying the mail from New Glasgow to Pictcu and back again yesterday. Mr. Woodaide made his first commercial flight for some time. it is understood that he will resume local service as soon as; landing field conditions in rurali areas clear up.

During the last six weeks a course of lectures on "You and Your Personality" has been held at the Y. M. C. A. under the leadership oi various doctors tom the staff at Falcomvood. The fol- lowing is a summary oi the final talk given by Mr. Nichols at So- lid Tuesday evening.

The concluding lecture dealt with the influence oi scciety upon the individual. Throughout the (Elk. Mr. Nichols emphasized the role that learning plays in living He polntcd out that from birth until death we endeavour to mod lfy our existence as a result of our experience. One way oi look- ing at this process, he thought. was to regard it as one oi asking questions and seeking answers. In school. during earlier years, it was a formal process. but once one is out in the world. one has to con. tinue alone. learning new routines of office. business or trade, how to get along with others, how to look at the world and answer for our being here.

To support this point of view, he outlined briefly the develop- ment of a person fi-cm birth

through adolescence to adulthood. showing particularly the effect. which society exerts in moulding one's personality. l-low, at the be- ginning through the views of the parents, and later through the various institutions. in: school, church. and various media of com- munication, the paper. radio. etc.. the person learns by means of a system of rewards and disappoint- ments what is expected of one.

During adolescence, with its in- creased awareness of physical and spiritual needs, the individual be- gins to question more st;-onglythe systems of authority. he said, he- gins lo ask why,'of the many in- stitutions which exislz. in order to Kain a better undicrstanadin-g of oneself in relation to one'.s fellow- man and God.

He described some of the psy- dhological mechanisms. or ways by which the individual is-bsorbs th: 5u"0"nd1nK culture. and at the some time protect himself and enchsnces his personal autonomy of feeling about himself. These mechanisms were. identification. Persons tend to identify with fig- ures in authority, to take on their ways. because of the suggestion of personal secui-lty.whlch these fig- uros exhibit, in this way the per- son feels that by acting as they do, he becomes like them. He showed also how persons rational- in or make excuses and project fhelr inadequacies upon others in defence of their own integrity. I-lo showed that in this manner people become critical of faults in others. because they see that these per- sons exhibit tendencies. which they dislike in themselves. but won't consciously admit, preferring to criticize them in others.

ll. K. Health Bill Clears Hurdle

LONDON. March 28 - (UP) .. (FPNIY) -- The governments bill to impose small charges for medi- cine and other items in Britain's national tax-supported health ser- viou cleared its first big hurdle in the House of Commons early today.

Independent on Age Assistance Board suggested

A suggestion that the old Age Assistance Board should not have any members of the Government in its personnel was advanced in the Legislature this week by Mr. John A. MacDonald. Third Kings. He felt the matter was so important that the Board should be taken out of politics by having only inde- pendent men forming it.

In dealing with Island conditions in general he m.-mmended that the Government give greater as- sistance that! at present to the smaller hospitals of the Province. So far as his own district is con- cerned he stressed the need for roads in the communities of Union- vale and Lorne Valley and added that the "Seven Mile Road" from Cardigan to Dundas should be sub- gradcd for paving this year as it is the most important North-south road in the county. d

Touching on education he felt. that the courses at the Vocational school should be geared to agricul- tural needs and the work of the schocl publicized more than at present. In regular school teachers he thought there was too great a. turnover and too many permit teachers. There was a need of giv- ing them better salaries. especially any who had not had an increase since 1947.

Among the safety measures he suggested for highway traffic wa- arectiun of more crossing signs at railway crossings and a greats. dsgree of cutting away of brush.

So far as agriculture was con- cerned he felt that the potato growers were being left "to sweat it out" while other products were subsidized. Potatoes. he said, rep- resented our largest cash crop and were vitally important to the Province.

Mr. MacDonald wondered if per- haps the expansion in the Depart- ment of Health and Welfare was not so grant that it had become a matter of "keeping up with the James” and questioned if it were entirely economical at the rate at which it was procecdinngrl-lowever. he realized that it was difficult for non-medical men io criticize and fully agreed with the need that the proposed treatment centre at Falconwood was a vital neces- sity. The number of applications for Old Age Assistance in age groups es-es being below the number utlmsied should mean a saving of money to the Government. lie thought the Government should be more lenient in dealing with some of the requests.

Legislature Considers 24 Bills During Day

Characterized by Hon. A. W. Matheson, Acting Premier. as one of the heaviest days work he had seen in the Legislature for many years, 'the House yesterday gave consideration to 24 bills while also giving first reading to another half dozen.

Introduced for the first time were An Act to Amend the Legislative Asaembl,v,Act. which also received second reading under a suspension of the rules, An Act for this Train- ing, Licensing and Practice of Nursing Auxiliary Personnel, The Blind Persons Act, this Old Age As- sistance Act, The School Act. and An Act to Provide for the Granting of Assistance to Certain Persons Under Certain Conditions.

Poor visibility at Charlottetown Airport forced the Aerial ice Patrol to make an alternate landing at Halifax during their return flight from charting ice conditions in the Gulf yesterday. Radio reports from both Moncton and Charlottetown stated there was heavy "soup" and advised them to set down at Hall- fax. Captain Charles A. Shaw, observ- er of the flight from Dartmouth. N.8. said, "I was hoping to spend a night at home but the weather lifted at Charlottetown and within an hour we were in he air and on our way back.

Their Canso amphibian was in the air six hours and covered ap- proximately 800 miles during yes- terday's flight.

Fog banks Wednesday prevented the patrol from mapping the ice situation cast and west of St. Paul's Island. Excellent visibility was en- counter-Ad in the same area yester- day and the flight got a clear pict- ure of the whole situation.

Harbor Opening Up

During the flight it was noted that the Charlottetown Harbor had opened up except for the outside entrance which -was still blocked by ice in the straits. On the cast- orn edge of the Gulf. ice was re- ported as extending from 20 miles east of Entry Island to about 25 miles N. W. of St. Paul's and thence in 15 miles True North of St. Paul's. The extreme edge of ice then runs on an uneven line to a position of about 40 miles E. N. E. of Sydney. Cape Breton.

The ice in the Morien Head area was observed as sticking to the shoreline and large plots of open water were also noted in this ice field. Captain Shaw stated that a good strong wind could rapidly plug up this area. A clear steamer track to the river St. Lawrence was also observed during the patrol.

Four sealers were spotted work- ing the area. approximately 15 miles on the north side of Prince Edward Island by members of the crew.
