The fears of Sir Richard (or Poor Richard) are so far from being realized, that Sir Leouard has anuounced his in- tention .of proposing to Var'iament, at the next session, the abrogation of the Tea Daties.

As the Tea Duties are of general ap- plication, their repeal wil! afford relief all round. Thc ‘e is, perhaps, no tax that the people could be relieved of with such fairness to every section of Causda

Our Streets.

A citizen who inspected the work this ferenoon, informs us that the statement of our correspondent of Saturday that *“old boots, tin pans, nivh’-soil, ete.,” are being used to repair Prince street, is incorrect, Certaiuly our streets, ge ier- ally have been greatly improved under the energetic superintendence of Council- lor Smith ; and if tue finances willadmit of an extension ofghe work,éwe hope Coun- cijlor Smith will ge on with it. It was a good idea to use ashes for the repair of the sireets; and if citizens geuerally would keep the ashes made in their heuses apart from other garbag-, and haad them over to the Commissiover of Streeis they would do well ; for then our sireets might soon all be put in a pass- able and permanent state of repair, at comparatively small expense.

Intercolonial Fish Trade.

Tr is pleasing to learn that the large trade in fish, which will eve loug be done between the Maritime aad the Upper Proviaces, has at length been opened. The Sun says that “ Messrs. Youag & Noble, of St. John, sent o/f their first lot fianan haddies to the Upper Provinces on Wednesday last; and that they can un- dersell their American competitors, and consequently expect to work up a large basiness.”” We have no doubt they will. There can be no solid reason why the Maritime Provinces should not sapply Montreal, Toronto, and other large cities ofthe West with, at least, a portion of tae fish they require.

At a convention of tie ‘‘ Ontario Bee- keepers Asso .iatiou,” beld in Toronto’a few days ago, the chairm..n stated that two cakes, one a ginger and the other a spouge, both sweetened wi h honey, had been sent to the Convention by a certain Mrs. J. G. Wallace, of Prighten. The cakes, being cut up, were passed to the members present, who discussed their merits, and pronounced them uncom- monly good. It was stated that a cake sweetened with honey was better than one sweetened with sugar, as the honey would keep it moist. ‘The chairman said that if ladies would use honey in making cakes they migut do iheir baking in the winter time when it was cool, and have fresh cakes all through the summer. It was moved by Mr. Wm. F. Clark, and seconded by Mr. N.. B. Colcock, * That among the many uses of honey, its value as a sweetening in the processes of cook- ery is one of the most important, espe- cially in view of the adalteration practised upon almost all grades of sugar, and this meefing takes the opportunity afforded by the presentation of Mrs. Wallace’s excellent cakes to call the at- tertion of the public to the great superior ity of honey to sugar in al! cases in which an absolutely pure sweet is desired.” The resolution was carried.

Interesting to Farmers and Others.

A case was tried in Toronto, recently, which should be taken note of by armers and others residing the rural districts. Some time ago Henry Bingham, of the township of Bentick, was waited on by an agent for an ‘‘ Hixeelsior garden pump,” who desired to appoint him sub ageut for the dirtrict. Mr. Bingham thought he saw achance to make money, the agent’s terms being very liberal, and he willingly :igmed a paper which, when

read to him, purported to be a simple agreement about the pumps. What

was his surprise, some time afterwards, when he ws: asked to provide for a prom- issory nole of $45. It seems ths ‘ avent” had substituted a proniisary note for the aforesaid agreement, and Mr. Bingham’s eyesight not being geod had not noticed the dsception. He refused to pay, hence the action in court. It was not the origina! agen’ whe sned—he had left for parts un- known—but a third party who had acquired the nete. The jndve was convinced frou the evidences that a iraud had been prac ticed, and granted a nonsuit.

Voting for the Premiership

The Moneton T mes, continuing its re- ports of the St. Bernard’s Bazaar and the voting, says :—

‘*The voting for the Premiership of 1883 was conducted with much spirit. The managers adopted the plan of issuing bulle tins at short intervals, showing the state of the poll. Sir Johu usually led, his majori ties being LOC twe or three times, when the Biakeites would raliy and pile their ba'lets inby handfuls. The Biakeites were naiur ally the most anxious to win, but they lacked in numbers, except about the polling sooth and ballot box, and no amount of enthusiasm eould overcome ihe superior number of Sir John voters. Finally as many as fifty of Blake ballots were dis- pesed of for a quarier, twenty-five for ten cents, and so on, and under the exigencies the Macdonald men rallied, and there was a good deai of cross-firing. There was an uncertainty about the hour the poll would close, but at at 11.50 it was announeed to close at 12 o'clock. Auroral Displays and the Weather.

What the aurora presages is a matter of doubt. The popular idea is that it indi- cates a great storm, but whether this sup- position is true or not is very doubtful. Great storms of rain have followed, and apparently besr connected with some of the great displays of the Northern Lights ; Sut, on the other hand, auroral displays have been noticed here without beirg suc- ceeded, at least in this part of Canada, by any marked precip‘tation. They are no! unfrequently followed by a cold snap, as was the case with the auroras of Angnst, 1880, and of Jenuary 31st and Feb. Ist of the present year. That aureraa and mag netic storms have a close connection with the weather the results thus far reached by Prof, Balfour Stewart, who is at present in- vestigating the subject of magnetism ia its connection with atmospheric conditions, seem to indicate. The Professor is stil] pursuing his inqnivy largely on the obser- vations of Toronto Observatory, aud should the supposed connection be established, a most important step will have been taken in the matter of weather forecasting and meteorology generally.—Tvronto Globe.

Accorpina to the preliminary report of the special census agent on the salt indus. try of the United States, it appears that the production of salt has increased from 12,- 727,198 bushels in 1860 to 29,800,298 bushels in 1889. Of this amount 888,968 bushels were procured from sea water by solar evaporation and 944,158 busels from iniand lakes or natural Qeposits by the s»me precess. The remainder was obtained from subterranean brines 8,853 821 bushels by artificial evaporation according to the kettle or pan process, and 16,115,551 bushels by steam evaporation. Of the fifteen States and territories which have salt works, Michigan leeds and New York cemes next, these two States producing more than two thirds of the whole amount The totel value of the salt product during the year wes $4,817,656. Capital to the amount of $8.225,740 wes employed, and 5,00) hands were engaged in the business. The deepest wells are iff West Virginia, where they average 1,043 feet.

The British Goverarent has undertaken to put aside 41,500,000 of Indian revenue zach year a\ an insurance fund against famine. Pioche, Nev., is the possessor of a big ind well filled graveyard, occupied exclus- ively by the bodies of gentlemen who died vith their beots on. In times past, when such buria’s were common, the cemetery was kept in some style, but now that all the rlory has departed from the mining towns, che graves are neglected, the headboards have gone to decay,and seon there will be no distinguishing features between the resting places of the old timer, who slew his score of fellow mortals, and the tenderfoot whe received a death wound in his first affray.

Dr. Samuel Sexton, of England,has been engaged for two or three years in an inves- tigation of the teeth ef school children, with special reference to the influence of decayed teeth upon the sight and hearing. He has examined hundreds of cases, and taken acourate castsin plas.er of the interior of the mouths. The resait has been that he has found a pretty constant assoc.ation be- tween impaired hearing and defec- tive teeth, the cause of which he believes to lie in the distribution of the fifth pair ef nerves, which *s at ence a sensory, motor, and trophic pair, supplying the teeth, the tissues of the nose, these of the eye and ear, the integrmeats of the frontal and temporal region, and so on. A de‘ective tooth is found to cause irritation of the whele region. The fact, too well known by many, that the severest cases of neural- gia, in head, face, and eyes, frequently avise from impaired teeth, gives «olor to the cheory, and it is quice possible that the new line of investigation Dr. Sexten is thus pursuing may lead to important and pain- saving results.

The statistics relating to the work of the London police force, contained in the re- port of the Home Secretary, are of an in- teresting character. There are 10,943 men attached te the force of all ranks af which twenty-five are superintendents, 703 in- epectors, 922 sergeants, and 9,393 conata- bles. Large as is this force, the necessi- ties of London seem to call for mere men, as in 1880 semething like 30,090 more houses were added to the metropolis, and seventy additional miles had to be protect- ed. During tbe year 154 men resigned and 140 were dismiesed, but, on the other hand, some 1,400 have been specialiy commended and rewarded for meritorious services. The number of principle offences during 18380 was 25,668, an increase of 2,134 over the preceding year, and for these 15,103 apprehensions were made, and 8,928 con- victions to crime has considerably in- creased, being represented in 1880 by 35.19, while in 1879 it was hard- ly thirty per cent. Murders have very unfortunately, increased in London. {a 1879 there were 9,in 188017. These 17 murders led to 20 apprehensions and 7 convictions. The number of murderers is remarkably small for so large a city, and compares very favorably with the criminal statistics of Chicago or New York. The participants in burglaries are not any more discoverable than formerly, for 1,292 thera were only 203 appreheusions, with 142 convictions. One ching qui‘e noticeable

The Horses, Cattle and other Live Stock will be shown in the spacious grounds sur rounding the Buildings, where ample Cattle Sheds, Stalls, &c., have been erected, andes Horse Track prepared, The Fruits, Flowers, Roots and Vegetables will be displayed in a Special “ HORTICULTURAL HALL ” in the Public Gardens, near the General Exhibition Grounds, and for which Coupon Tickets will be issued without extra charge,

The New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island Governments will refund freight on approved exhibits from these Provinces re- spectively. No charge for entry of Exhibits, nor for space,

Military and other Bands of Music will be in attendance,

Every cffort is being exerted to render the Exhibition attractive, and to utilize the re- sources whih Halifax, asa great Naval and Military Station commands, to make the City worthy of the attention of visitors from the other Provinces.

The requirements of bisiness men, holiday tourists and families will alike be provided for, A suitable Restaurant will be erected on the Grounds, where Meals, &c., will be fur- nished at reasonable rates by Mr, Charles Woolnough,
