Tue publication of the evidence in the Lord Colin Campbell case has called forth a dis- cussion as to the duty of the press to the public when such a matter is before the courts. On this point the London 7imes seems to take thereasonable view. The Vimes points out that there are three courses open to the news- papers. They can give the evidence in all its offensiveness. They cin suppress the evidenee altogether, or they can publish the bearing of the testimony divested of all that is nauseous in it. ‘The course pursued by the Times has been that mentioned last. The genere] news- paper, it is clear, cannot conceal the fact that such a case f8 being tried, but it can, if it is a respectable journal, give the merits of the case without publishing that which is filthy and sensational.

Mr. Hurcnines, inspector of lights, inter- viewed regarding the alleged plunder of the wreck of the Minnie, says the lighthouse keeper accompanied by residents went off to the wreck, which had been abandoned, and at once communicated with the agent at Halifax for instructions, both by telegram and letter; and he was instructed to take care of the property and communicate with the authori- ties at Ottawa and await instructions from them. Subsequently the captain of the ves- sel made a statement to Mr. Johnson, agent at Halifax, and a copy has been sent to the light keeper and the matter will be investi- gated.
