OFFICER CADETS RETURN- Three of four officer cadets of the 5th Divisional Signals Regiment have returned from a three months course at Vlmy Barracks, Kingston, Ont. They are, Officer Cadet J. T. Gallant. Officer Cadet G. L. Jenkins and Officer Cadet J. L. D. Kennedy. The fourth Officer Cadet. A. R. McLean, is continuing on at the training cen- tre. N.H.. arrived on the Island last Wednesday evening for a brief visit with Mr. MacPhaiYs grand uncle. Mr. James MacPhail, Meadow Bank, and cousins Colin D. and Victor MacPhail and Mrs. Stanley Murray. York Point. Their first visit to P. E. I. and they were thrilled with its beauty and the warm friendliness of the people. Mr. Douglas drew attention to his statement as reported in yes- tcrda_v's lasuo recording the qual- ity of Island Shorlhorns. It ap- pears that he referred to the quantity of the entries rather than the quality. and states that. in general, the quality of the Shorthqrns was good.

Single entries in the two Angus classes provided no competition, Lawson and Raymond Tremere, New Wiltshlre showing a female calf and a cow in milk.

Guernsey:

Winning the Junior Female Championship. the Reserve Fe- male Grand Championship. the Reserve Senior Male Champion- fhip. and nine classes. J. Eric Hurry of Winsloe carried of! most of the honours in an interesting and well distributed competition.

From Milton. Daniel MacLean's Junior Champion. MacLean‘sCom- mander, won the Grand Cham- pionship. This breeder also won the Senior and Grand Champion- ships (female) and four classes.

Poultry

A feature of the poultry exhib- ition this year was that almost cvery class had a representative number of birds and were evenly distributed.

Winner again this year of the highest number of prises, Alvin lvlacDonald. Covehead Road, well- known R.O.I’. and hatchcryman. made an excellent showing in Plymouth Rocks. taking every first prize. l-[e also received numerous prizes for his New l-iampshires. ‘C. S. Scranton. field man with the Dominion Department of AI- riculture who judged with Fred Driscoli. noted particularly that the new cross-bred breeding pens with their progeny were well fill- ed this year with excellent quel- ity stock.

Island Officers First In Signals Competition

Two Prince Edward Island offic- ers of the 5th Divisional-Signal Regiment. Lt.-Col. K. M. John- ston, officer commanding, won first places in Canada-wide com- petitions held by the Canadian Signals Association. it was an. nounced yesterday by Capt. A, R, Bowies, Administration and Train- ing Officer.

Major F. S. Jenkins, second-in- command of the 5th Div. Signals, took first place in a paper applic- able to field oflicers, while Lt. (now Captain) R. G. Dumont wcn first place in a written paper on signal subjects pertaining to jun- ior officers,

Major Jenkins whose home is in Charlottetown served during the war with the 3rd Divisional Signals in England and Northwest Europe.

Calif. Dumont. also of Charlotte- town, served during the early part of the war with the R.C.C S. and later transferred to the 10th Armoured. serving in Normandy with the Fort Garry Horse Regi- ment. , -

In each case papers were sub- mitted by contestants from Otta- wa, Montreal, Toronto. Winnipeg. Regina, Calgary. Vancouver and Halifax.

Second place in the Field Of- ilcers‘ competition went to Lt.- Col. W R. Scrimes, Winnipeg. while Major D. C. Lambert. Van- couver, placed third.

2-Lt. K. C. Hosley. Montreal. was second in the Junior Officer competition with Lt. RF. Turch- in, also of Montreal, placing third.

The papers were written in February and March of this year.
