A soft easterly breeze stirred the golden sands of the shores of Prince Edward Island.

It rustled the blade grass and made the little blue waves dance and sparkle as if bubbling over with Q story they longed to reveal. A story that goes back four Len- turles to the year 1534, when they rocked mercilessly a little ship, a mere dot on the vast expanse of water, how they heard a joyous voice txy out, "Lsndi We've, slgvtted landl" That voice was the voice of Jacques Cartier. Any land would have gladened the hearts of the weary mariners, but this land not only glisddened their hearts but excited their senses,

For. ss Cartier described i: “all the land is low and the most beau- tiful it is possible to see and lull of beautiful trees and meadows."

The Mi-cmac Indians had called the island by the euphonlous name of Abegwelt. Jacques Cartier called it Bt. John's having arrived on St. John's Day. And so it remained un- til 1799 when it became Prince Ed- ward Island in honor of the Duke of Kent.

It was these mariners who gove the island her historical begin- ning. and later some farsighted then gathered round the council table at Charlottetown Conference in 1864 and planted the seed which was to unite her with the other colonies of British North America to form one strong nation.

Like Cartleri bold adventurers who never envisioned the wealth of their discovery. the man gathered around the council table probably never conceived it possible that their dream would grow to ombruce all of British North America.

But they planted better than they knew and Prince Edward Island be- came the "Cnadle of Canada"
