A drunk and incapable was sentenced to 20 days in jail, and a drunk and disorderly was remanded until Thursday.

JUDGE PALMER GUEST SPEAKER - Judge H. L. Palmer was the guest speaker at the Char- lottetown Kiwanis Club weekly luncheon held at the Charlotte- town liotel on November 2nd. The subject of the address ‘was the American electoral system or the procedure adopted in the Unlterl States in electing a president. The subject-a very difficult one-ova: ably presented by Judge Palmer and was one which did much to in- form members on the iniricricies cf the American system. The Char- lottetown Kiwanis Club is indebted io Judge Palmer for a most in- formative and interesting address.

Distribution 0i lied Cross Cigarets

In yesterday's editorial column it was suggested that the Red Cross might “fill the breac " by providing cigarettes at their re- duced price for the visiting of vet- erans in hospital done by the Canadian Legion. A Red Cross official has informed The Guardian that this would be impossible as these cigarettes are stamped with the Red Cross insignia and there- fore would not be acceptable for distribution by any other organ- ization. Furthermore, there is no breach in the services being rendered. by the Canadian Red Cross for veterans in hosl-‘tital. Regularly every Monday night members of the Red Cross Corps -- that splendid group of young women volunteers - visit the vet- erans in hospital and bring them cigarettes, new magazines, pocket. novels or games all of which are supplied by the Red Cross, as well as fruit provided by the Charlotte- town Branch of the Canadian Legion. There are on an average of 75 veterans iri hospital each week — last year some 3,851 were visited. In addition. there is a Red Cross Arts s; flrafts Super- visor spending lier full time iri- structing veteran Paticrgts in handicrafts — she also does many little messages and shopping for them. Further entertainment is provided through a‘ weekly film show in the three Charlottetown Hospitals and at Falconwood. These film shows are financed jointly by the Red Cross and D. V. A. Members of the Red Cross Corps also staff a Lending Library at the P. E. I. Hospital one night each week. where they distribute books supplied by the I. O. D. E.

Concert "Last Night At York

An enthusiastic audience greeted a large cast of entertainers last night at York where their long anticipated concert got away to a flying start. Proi-nptly at 8:15 the curtain rose on a bedroom scene at the ilOlllG of the Edmundsons, where the locale of the opening number, a one-act play "Utter Re- laxation" was laid. This hilarious farce was capably handled by Arthur Vessey as the invalid hus- band and his managing wife Amy played by Aime Crockett, while lesser but equally humorous parts were taken by Evelyn Underhay as the (singing?) maid, Margaret Proud and Dewar Swan as the visitors and Rupert Vessey as the telephone repair man.

After the audience had recover- ed sufficiently from its continual spasms of nicrrlment during this half-hour presentation, vocal and violin solos were capably rendered by the two guest artists, Mrs. Gordon Stewart and Mr. Ralph Raynor,’ who graciously responded to eiicores.

A comedy stunt "Such by Dorothy Vessey, Howard Watts. Gordon Crockett and an assorted cast brought to a. close the first part of the program. Following a short intermission, the main feat- ure of the evening “At the Fair" a medley of music, stunts and, novelties was presented, and judg- ing by the enthusiaism of the audience met with hearty approval. As the success of this portion of the program depended s. great deal upon its surprise element, it, would scarcely be fair to those who have not yet seen the entertainment to elaborate on the details. through the various scenes to the unexpected ending. there was not a dull moment and much credit is due Alan and Dewar Sivan for the clever lighting effects and to Frances Vessey and Vinie Foster who had charge of the costumes. The stage setting for "At the Fair” was cicvisecl by Isabel Swan and Irene Ciiappcli, stage managers were Wendell Vessey and Harry Lewis, while the entire product- ion was under the supervision of Arthur. Vesey and Harry Vessey. This entertainment will run tour more nights which will give those who were not fortunate enough to bc present last evening, fill opportunity to secure tickets for a future performance.

Splendid Showing By In S. A. Campaign

010st to 841.000 was realized in the one-day general city canvass yesterday for the Salvation Army Red Shield Campaign it was made known at a supper meeting of workers held in the Citadel last. night. ‘The Special Names Com- mittee, under Mr. W. R. LePage, has reported $2,300 collected. It is expected that when all returns are in the city will have once again exceeded its objective of $6,000. The provincial objective is $9.500 and returns from the rural areas have been reported coming in sat- lsfactorily.

Team No. l6, captained by City Clerk J. A. Fullerton, captured the team prize, having made 25B per cent of its objective, The team turned in $508 50 with an object- ive set at $195.

Division No. 4, commanded by Harper MacNeiil, won the divis- ional prize, having exceeded its objective of $800 by 13 per cent.

The second team prize went to team No. 2 ct the lst Division captained by the I-lon. F. A. Large. The second divisional prize went to Lloyd Grant of Division No. 3.

The City Chairman. Tom D.‘ DeBlois. expressed his thanks to the workers for their splendid ef- fOrts in the campaign. Thcir co- operation had helped make the burden of running such c cam- paign lighter and it was with sat- isfaction that all could look back on a job well done.

Regret was expressed by Mr. De- Blois and other speakers at the pending departure of Major imd Mrs. MscLean. Tribute was paid their work here with the Salva- tion Army the past three years. In reply Major MscLean thanked the tvorkers for their co-operatirm and splendid results achieved. The Charlottetown organization for such a campaign was the envy of other centres on the mainland. he said.

In presenting the brief. Mr. Mar:- Donald reported lack of interest in Summerside towards any change and stated that others elsewhere had expressed similar feelings. But he contended that an increase in price was necessary according to their findings on the costs of pro- duction. "'l‘bis is the only branch of livestock farming that you cen- not buy all the feed and come out with a profit," declared Mr. Mac- Donald.

Mr. Rodd drew attention to the small depreciation charges allowed against the barn. "What about the dairy, ice-house and water system depreciation?" he asked. He point.- ed out that the figure of $12 de- preciation on a cow was "ridicul- ous," when losses are considered.

Discussion on the evils of “sur- plus milk” brought forth many suggrstlona. Mr. Andrew MECRAO pointed out that this wis handled in some quarters by a central re- ceiving stat-ion and Mr. Guy Rodd called for the formation of a roni - mittce "to investigate the forming of a co-operativs to handle aur- plus milk."
