The centre of the movement is said to be at Paarl, a village about 30 miles from Cape Town, where a meeting of the Afrikande, bond was held yesterday.

Although stories of a rising are dis- credited, the police and military are tak- ing ample precautions.

Halitax Herald: The grit candidate io Chambley-Vercheree, Mr. Victor Geoffrion, is reported as saying that Sir- Wilfrid atirier’s attitude on the Transvaal contingent is the true one But Sir Wilfrid has had three different “‘attitudes”—(1) sending no Canadian troops ; (2) sending one centingent and no more; aud (3) sending more. Sir Wilfrid in this matter, as in ali othera, is a great man for “‘attitudes”—and con- flicting attitudes at that. Mr. Geoffrion may be pleased to have a large and varied *‘attitudes” to select from, but there is reason to believe that the honest electorate of this country is rather sick of ministerial “‘a'titudes.”

Thursday evening we dropped a bill in the Pest Office for a prominent geutleman of this town. The next morning we bad the pleasure of rece pting it. This is what we call rromptness. (Ob, that others would do likewise.) We have been drop- ping, dropping, softly dropping a number of bills in the Post Office; and we are wait- ing, waiting patiently, to have the pleasure aud to give the rleaeure of receipting them.

Finally, according to forecastie tradition, the figure sneezed, and the sailor, who was known as “Lovely Mike,” because he was the ugliest man that ever set foot on a ship’s deck, neariy fell into the sea. He recovered his senses and said, ‘Did you speak?’

This rather curt interview is alleged to have worked a marked change in Mike, and when he got home he aston- ished his wife by giving her a couple of dollars.—Baltimore News.

Fish Poisoning.

In the United States fish poisoning is most frequently due to decomposition in canned fish. The most prominent symptoms are nausea, vomiting and purging. Sometimes there is a scarla- tinous rash. which may cover the whole body. The writer has studied two outbreaks of this kind of fish poi- soning. In both instances canned salm- on was the cause of the trouble. Al- though a discussion of the treatment of food poisoning is foreign to this paper, the writer must call attention to the danger in the administration of opi- ates in cases of poisoning with canned fish.

Vomiting and purging are efforts on the part of nature to remove the poi- son and should be assisted by the stom ach tube and by irrigation of the colon. In one of the cases seen by the writer large doses of morphine had been ad- ministered in order to check the yom- iting and purging and to relieve the pain, In this case death resulted.
