Mr. McKenzie will not leave his present residence till the spring. He has suecumb- ed at least to the Grit and Rogue swarms of delegates from Ontario and Quebec, and will make a host of appointments before re- signing, thus kicking away the last plank in the Reform platform. Holton was the latest arrival, and he urges these appoint- ments.

Monrreat, Sept. 25.

A grand Liberal-Conservative picnic was held at St. Helen’s Island to-day. Chap- leau, among and above others. made a mag- nificent speech.

It is rumored that Laflamme will be made a Judge of the Supreme Court. This is almost incredible.

A grand Liberal-Conservative rally will be held at Three Rivers next Monday for the whole Province. Sir John, Dr. Tup- per, and other leaders will be present.

The Yellow Fever.

New York, Sept. 26.—There were forty deaths from yellow fever in Memphis, yes- terday, and forty-three at New Orleans, The weather continues unfavorable for the | disease. The citizens of the former city an- ‘nounce that sufficient aid has been received for the presert and future wants, and that further contributions are wmnecessary. The scourge continues to increase in some por- |tions of the Mississippi and to abate in ‘ others.

The Bellerophon.

‘Come along,” said my friend Fred, ‘and let us board the Bellerophon.” No sooner said than we were pulling towards the noble ship. When we reached the deck and glanced at our surroundings we felt gratified to think the noble craft be- longed to that realm on which the sun never sets, and that the muscular, jolly looking dare-devils, over whose heads floated the flag that for ‘‘ these thousand years has braved the battle and the breeze,” would hand the noble bunting unsullied to the coming generation of England’s naval heroes. What acontrast the Bellerophon and ships of her class exhibit when we think of the old wooden walls at one time England’s pride and glory. The writer well recollects seeing riding at anchor in the Tagus, in the spring of 1833, the first raters Caledonia, of 120 guns ; the Britan- nia, ditto, and Asia, 84 guns—hnuge three deckers, armed with forty-two pounders, at that time thought a heavy armament—of which our jolly tars were correspondingly proud. But whatat the present time would such wooden ships as the old Caledonia or Britannia—singly or combined—do to hold their own in an encounter with such a for- midable antagonist as the Bellerophon ? Her weight of mettle would sink them or leave them entirely at her mercy in a very short space of time. It is pleasant to think Old England’s wooden walls were as formi- dable in their day as her mighty ironclads are among the navies of the world at the present hour. But to return to our visit. Everything looked so clean and tidy, and the tars appeared so rollicking and jolly, we almost envied them their lot—free from from the carking financial and domestic cares of we toiling landsmen. Verily, said we, they enjoy many immunities who swear fealty to Neptune. Yours, etc.,

Excuses for the Defeat.

Belshazzar and his courtiers at Ottawa were smitten in the height of their revelry with such appalling suddenness and extent of ruin that in their overthrow they cannot agree as to the true cause nor lay the blame on the right victim. The Guelph Mercury thinks it was the ballot, to which also the British ‘‘Liberals” ascribed their defeat in 1874. The Merewry, forgetting, apparently, that secret voting used to be a favorite Grit plank, says plaintively that ‘‘our experience so far shows that ‘‘under its cover the most sacred pledges and promises are broken,” and then it recounts how greivously the Re- form canvass was belied by the result throughout Ontario. The Ottawa Free Press, the special vrgan of the Government, thinks ‘‘the popular desire for change,” had much to do with their Sedan, but why does our contemporary stop there and leave untouched the secret springs of that desire / The Free Press also thinks the Conserva- tives were better organized, which is a poor compliment to the Party organizer who has been drilling the rank and file and keeping the leaders primed with bulletins on the state of the public pulse for over a twelve- month back. But of the many alleged causes, those put forward L’ Lvenement, Senator Fabre’s paper, reflect most severely on the Party leaders, It says, bitterly, that ‘‘the Conservative party should thank Heaven this day that the Liberal party did not have at its head at Ottawa men of the stamp of those who hold power in Quebee,” for it declares that if ‘‘ the reins of Government at Ottawa had been held by a clever, energetic and courageous man like M. Letellier’—a clear admission that the Lieutenant Governor is the chief of the Joly Government—*‘ then instead of having to deplore a Waterloo, we should be celebrating an Austerlitz.” L’ Evenement goes on savagely :—

‘* After five years of office we have allow- ed ourselves to be overthrown without using the enormous resourees at our dispo- sal, : ; ; Before and during the contest, the feeling that reigned at headquarters was ever the same. To all advice and to all warnings and entreaties, the Chief had but one reply, viz., it is im- possible that we can lose in Ontario as much as we shall win elsewhere. In sooth, we know toour cost to-day what Ontario is worth. It is there the re-action has been most complete, there the overthrow most sweeping. Our leaders staked all their hopes on Ontario, and it was their they turned all their efforts and attention, and she has answered them with the blackest ingratitude. i ; ; With one- half of that which they used to keep control oy here, they might have swept this Province from end to end.

This is candid; but after all there is much truth in it. Ontario did get the lion’s share of the spoils. Tremblay, the Montreal Herald people, St. Just, Joly, Speaker Turcotte and a few others gota trifle each, but the sums pocketed by the Premier’s brother, Oliver & Co., Foster,

r et al, were as dollars to cents ; ana if the Ministerial bribery fund were distri- buted inthe same proportion last week, then indeed Quebec has a righteous griey- ance, and Senator Fabre is but doing a sacred duty in protesting against the Pre- mier’s ¢partiality. After all, it is lament- able to see the organs of a once great Party putting forward wretched excuses like these for the calamity that has overtaken it. The secret of its overthrow is simply that it failed in a supreme crisis to act the part of a popular or parental Administration. It
