The Easter Beef Display.

THE

j aie ‘ime display of fat and heavy beef to-day was not up to that of former years, but so far as quantity was concerned there was enough and to spare. Of late years there has not been much demand for fat beef, that is excessively fat beef, and this | no doubt, accounts tor the fact that the | supply of this quality is gradually falling jolf. The people want a geod substantial | inorsel and that is what they now get sup- | lied to them in abundance. All the stalls were well stocked with choice cuttings to- day (here was also the usual number ot crities and all were pleased with the dis- play. ' The stall of Messrs. Blake Bros.,was well stocked, containing as it did six fine car- casses of nicely dressed and choice beef, the tutal dead weight of which was 5000 Ibs. {mong the six was the steer fed by them- which weighed 1,100 Ibs. dressed and the Dewar steer only 2 years and 10 vonths old, which balanced the scales at 900 Ibs. The Dewar heifer 22 months dressed 650 Tbs., and the McKay heifer 815

bs. They also had some choice mutton on sale. A. L. Bridges & Co., had a nice attrac-

tive display at their stall on Hillsborough street. They had six carcases of beef which dressed 4500 Ibs. The Palmer cow being especially fat. Their stall was also well tilled with sugar-cured hams, rolled bacon, etc,

Messrs. Saunders & Campbell had four carcases of excellent beef, the total dressed weight of which was 3,239 Ibs., and the circase of the Stock Farm sheep which. iressed 141 ibs. The Beer cow killed well ind ranked with the fattest in the market.

Mr. John Drake's display was very good indeed, embracing as it did, three carcases which dressed 2257 Ibs.

Mr. Henry McGregor, Lot 48, had two fine fat carcases which weighed 760 and und 75) ibs respectively, when dressed.

Mr. George Thorn offered the carcases of the Mc#wen cow and the Robertson steer, the former dressing .759 Ibs., and the atter 5dL. He also had some choice mutton on sale.

Mr. Henry Wood, Pownal, had on sale the. careasses of the heifers fed by Alex. McRae and Ronaid Macdonald, the dressed weight of the first mentioned being 815 'bs., and of the latter 570. It is said that the McRae heifer came out nearer her live weight than any animal killed.

Messrs. H. Balls, Wheatley River; Grown and Sons, Little York; Jenkins and Curley, Lot 49, P. Trainor and W. Sellers, sity; B. Henderson, South Wiltshire; and S. Gay, Lot 49, had their stalls well stocked with choice beef.

The price per pound ranged from 10 to 14 cents.

The upper department of the Market was well stocked and patronized. Egys sold atfrom 9 to 10 cents per dozen;

The Waterworks Bill

Tue Citizens Waterworks Committee met the members of the City Council in the Law Library on Thursday evening last. The Waterworks Bill to be submitted to the Legislature was discussed, and it was

cided to call a public meeting of citizens ‘or Tuesday evening next, in order that it might be further considered. The bill has, we understand, been prepared strictly in accordance with the resolutions passed at the citizens’ meeting, viz., the works to be the property of the city, and to be con- structed and managed by a board of three commissioners, elected in the same manner as the Mayor, but the qua!tfication of elec- tors to be a property and rental qualifica- tion only of the same value as is required in the election of Mayor of the city. Fol- lowing are the priucipal clauses-of the

It is not lawful for any merch int, tradesman, artificer, mechanic, barber, workman, laborer, or other person whatsoever on the Lord’s Day to selior puvlicly show forth, expose or offer for sale, or to purchase any goods, chattels, or other personal property, or any real estate whatsoever, or to do or exercise any workily labor, business or work of his ordinary calliny, works of necessity and works of charity only excepted.

2. It is not lawful for any persona on that day to play at skit'les, ball, foot-bali, racket, cricket, or any other noisy game, orto gamble with cards, dice or otherwise ; or to skate in public places for sinusemeut, or torun races on foot, or on horse- sack orin carriages, orin vehicles of any sort, or to engaze in races of any kind, or other trials of strength or skill,

3. Except in defence of his property from any ravenous beast or b.rd of prey it is not lawfal for avy person onthat day to go out hunting, or sporting, or in quest of, orto take, kill or destroy any deer or other game,

to create a panic, when the Public Accounts are tabled, it would be time to set a wateh upon our present rulers.

That this Province has a temporary in- debtedness, no supporter of the Govern- ment will deny ; but that forms no excuse for the Patriot's attempts to deery our Pro- vincial credit.

Your contemporary makes a great ado about last veas’s deficit. One unacquainted with Grit rulé would suppose that so large a deficit was a thing unprecedented in this Province. Not so, however. Eight years ago, after having collected enormous sums in taxes, the Grit Government of the day met Parliament with a larger deficit than that of last year, when not one cent of taxes were levied. More extraordinary still, on the 14th April, 1879, there only re- mained in the Treasury $40,000 of the half- yearly subsidy received Ist January, 1879—- which sum included the inevitable old duty bonds and a quantity of cents.

While on the subjec | might refer to the public debt of New Brunswick as show- ing that our tempor-ry indebtedness is a mere bagatelle. That Province has been blessed for a number of years with a Grit Government, .and right royally the tax- payers are paying for the roast. In 1879 the floating and bounded debt of our sister Province was in thevicinity of $571,000 and when a change of Government occurred in 1882 the debt was $1,172,174.59,—an in- crease in four years of $690,000. On the 81st December, 1886, the debt had increas- ed to $1,911,488.52 ; in addition to which these Grit financers had drawn from capital at Ottawa, the sum of $75,000—imaking a total of $1,986,488.42--an expenditure in four years of $759,286.23 over ordinary out- lay. And that too, notwithstanding the fact that taxation had increased fifty per ceut., the receipt from the Dominion Gov- ernmeut of the interest of $609,000 received under the re-adjustment of Provincial debt, and $150,000 received for their eastern ex- tension claim.

These figures show that while this Province has been exempt for a number of years from taxation of any description, our indebtedness about $1.30 per head of the population to $6.18 in New Brunswick. _

There is also the prospect of our receiv- ing arefund atan early day which will wipe ont our indebtedness, and leave us $350,000 in pocket. This may be gall and worm-wood for the Opposition, but it is just such a tonic as will prepare them for the responsibilities of office some day in the distant future. .

Srr,—-Surely it is high time that our Civic Rulers should become alive to their duties and privileges in reference to the ap- proaching Jubilee celebration—upon which action is being taken in all the cities of the Dominion, with very few exceptions.

Inthe city of Halifax large meetings have already been held and active influen- tial committees appointed for the manave- ment of the Queen’s Jubilee in ‘Ye Ancient Colony,” Mayor MacIntosh of that city is chairman of the general committee. They have also selected an executive com- mittee of Alderman and _ representatives from the various national and other socie- ties.

The people of Charlottetown are waiting the action of the City Council in reference to this celebration. Upon Mayor Haviland and his Council Board rest all the honors and responsibilities connected with this celebration ; and we trust that they will be found inaugurating proceedings without delay. The new City Building is now -under contract, the foundation stone of which should be laid on Jubilee day.

The carriage drive from Governor's Bridge along the bank of the river to Vic- toria Park should be opened on the day of the Queen’s Jubilee, and be called the ** Jubilve Esplanade.”

We have our national societies, such as the Caledonian Club, the Benevolent Irish Society, and others. We have our M: sonic Lodges, our Oddfellows’ Lodges, our Miii- tiamen and Volunteers, our Fire Depart- ment and Salyage Corps, the Professions, Trades, Laborers, ete., our Aquatic and Athletic Clubs, our Temperance organiza- tions, our Literary Institutes, and last, though not least, the Press representatives. All those different Societies, Clubs and Organizations would, doubtless, turn out in honor of the occasion.

The programme for the proceedings might consist of laying the foundation stone 0° the new City Hall, opening the new Esplanade, grand gathering of school children, military review, sham fight, yacht and seull races, firemen’s processions, ete. In a word, there can be no reason why our people should not have their rejoicings in commemorating the Queen’s Jubilee as well as their fellow subjects in other places. We therefore do hope that the authorities will lose no time in commencing this noble and loyal work. Yours,
