Dr. Tupper is to-day a conspicuous figure in Canadian politics ; in fact, he can not be said to rank second to any living Canadian, either in ability or influence. Perhaps to him, as to Canadians generally, it is a matter of satisfaction that his reputation is not Provincial merely ; it extends throughout the bounds of Canada. De. Tupper’s voice and reasoning have been as potent in Ontario as in Nova Sco- tia ; and it is well that the occasion of the demonstration in Halifax last night is one which moves the whole Dominion to wn- bounded joy, and makes a new era in the history of our country.”

Halifax Welcomes Dr. Tupper.

A grand political demonstration took place at Halifax on the entrance of Hon. Dr. Tupper and James McDonald into the city from their respective constituencies. The streets were crowded with people, and a large number of houses and_ business places on the route were brilliantly illumi- nated. Bunting was displayed from three out of every four buildings on the route, and the cheering while the procession was passing was most enthusiastic. The de- monstration was the largest of a political kind ever seen in Halifax, being nearly double the length of that rendered to the late Hon. Joseph Howe ai the time of the Confederation in 1867. Nearly the whole procession was composed of persons on horseback and in carriages, and it took a little over twenty-five minutes to passa given point. The rink, a building capable of holding about four thousand people, was crowded to its utmost capacity, and thou- sands could not obtain admission. Speech- es were made by Hon. Dr. Tupper, Hen. Peter Mitchell, Hon. James McDonald, Hon. Senator Muirhead and others.

In the course of his speech Dr. Tupper said :—‘‘We now not only surpassed our opponents in point of numbers, but the Liberal-Conservative party never went into Parliament with such an array of talent to strengthen its hands as is now gathered around it. We have to mourn the loss, it is true, of such men as the Hon. Peter Mitchell, though Ido not suppose we will have to mourn his loss long. I believe that his energy and ability will not be long in finding a constituency. We had to mourn the defeat of Sir John A. Macdonald, but I am proud to know that before this he has been elected by acclamation to one con- stituency, and that twenty others would have been glad to secure the honor to themselves. We have to mourn the loss of such a man as Mr. Palmer, but, on the other hand, Mr. Domville. who is present with us this evening, has been nobly sus- tained. While some few of our standard bearers have fallen in the battle, and it hardly could be otherwise. Sir John A. Macdenald finds himself with such men as the Hon. James McDonald at his back, a gentleman from whom the confidence of the people of the County of Pictou was with- drawn for a time, but who have once again ireturned him as their representative; a gentleman who built up for himself a repu- tation, and obtained for the Province of Nova Scotia an amount of consideration, during his services in§Parliament, that fhas rarely been surpassed. He (Sir John) will also have to support him and the two gen- tlemen whom you have chosen to be your representatives, Messrs. Richy and Daly, two gentlemen whose position and ability would adorn the representation of any county in the Dominion. Men like Mr. Longley, who, after having adorned the Local Legislature, now carries his ability into the wider field of the Parliament of the Dominion. Under these circumstances Sir John A. Macdonald goes back to the halls of Parliament surrounded by a body of men from Nova Scotia of whom any country in the world might well feel proud. No words that I could utter could express the emotions of my heart at what the un- bought yeomanry of Halifax and the other counties of this Province have achieved.”
