A recent trial for murder has creajed great interest throughout: Scotland, and has given another revelation to those in- felicities which it is to be feared are everywhere too common, though it is only now and then that they come prominently before the public. ‘The accused in this case was a Frenchman called Eugine Marie Chautrell, who has for a good nnmber of years been a teacher of rench in Edin burgh, and has occupied a fair positior soeiety. The victim was bis wife, and the facts testified to on the trial brought to light a course of the most heartless villany on the part of Chantrelle, and are ealeulated to read a very grave lesson to all parents and guardians, as well as to young and thoughtless girls, if they could only be persuaded to attend to it and profit Ly the same. It is the old, old story. Chantrelle taught in ladies’ boarding schools, and was evidently possessed of a good deal of external polish and insinu- ating plausibility. Among his pupils was the poor girl who afterwards led sucha wretched life as his wife. He was her senior by about fifteen years; yet when she was comparatively a child, scarcely turned sixteen, and a mere thoughtless school-girl, he managed to seduce her, Her relatives thought it best, in order in a measure to hide her disgrace, to have him marry her, and so, with not even the pretence of affection, this ill-starred union was formed, and naturally resulted in any amount of misery, which has at last been dissolved by murder, and is likely to end with the gallews.

Chantrelle never took to his child-wife, and though both parent~ seem to have been fond of the children who were born to them, this did not bring them nearer to each other. ‘The husband was a careless debauchee, who did not think it necessary to keep up even appearances with his wife, while she struggled along as best she might on as sad and loveless a course as can well be imagined.

In such a state of things it is not diffi- cult to imagine how that by-and-by the wish to get free from an irksome bondage would suggest possible ways by which this wight be accomplished. Hatred is but a short remove from murder, as it is its great prompting cause. But Chantrelle was thrifty even in hiscrimes. He thought to get quit of his wife, and at the same time profit by her death. Mrs. Chan. trell was a young, and upon a whole, a healthy woman, leading a quiet life, and little exposed to any danger from accidents, exeept such as may becommon toall. The husband, however, thought it well to in- sure her life for a thousand pounds in an Accident Society, though the wife pro- tested that she saw not the least necessity for the step, and told her mother that after that insurance her life would go speedily. Her anticipations were only too surely and quickly realized. Death came evidently by poisoning, and her husband had the theory ready that it was occasioned by the escape of gas in the bedroom, though neither servant uor docior was able to recognize the presence of such a quantity of gas either in the house in general or in the bedroom in particular, as to have occasioned death, ‘That Mrs. Chantrelle died by poisoning of some kind was acknowledged on all hands. If not, then, by gas, by what? Medical testi- mony pointed strongly to opium, asall the symptoms were of narcotic poisoning. If so, the next question was, by whom was it administered? It was proved that it was not by the victim herself, so at last the guilt was led very clearly, though on eirs cumstantial evidence, up to the husqand. The verdict of the jury is oa all hands re- cognised as a righteous one, and the moral of the whole story is not far to seek. Mrs. Chantrelle, disgraced and dishonored as she was, did not wish to marry her se- ducer. Freneh honor, however was, urged as an imperative reason for the ir- revocable step being taken; and now, ufter years of misery and s'n, one of the parti s to this ill starred union has been murdered, and the scaffold will, in a few days, in all likelihood, close the tragedy for the other.

No one can have much sympathy for the man who could take advantage of his position and the trust reposed in him to| seduce a girl that might almost have been his daughter. But surely a good many mothers and friends may take the hint from this and other similar tragedies that foreed marriages, for whatever reason, can
