CROPS AND CROPPING.

Maine has produced a good average hay crop, for her. Much of it mainly buttereups, daisies and like trash, but favered spots have yielded a second crop of clover or timothy. The potato crop is light ; tubers are small, very sound and very dry. Maine farming would be a bye-word and a hissing in Prince Edward Island, if gener- ally known there in its petty inefficiency. The Yankee makes a poor farmer. He is ever after the ready dollar, even as the turkey is after the grasshopper ; he hasn’t patience to toil and wait. He thinks of the prairie farmer cropping land that needs not manure, and lets the dung of the summer night yard dry up and blow away, whilst he hunts around for money to pay for phosphate in the spring. In many dis- tricts he carts his grain to the threshing mill, rather than bring the mill to the srain, he has so little threshing to do. ; He raises his potato crop as poor Pat did his in the ould counthry before the famine, by the hoe and by the spade and spadinz fork. [have not seen a reaping machine in Maine. Ihave not to my knowledge met with a Maine man that ever saw one. Police, Attention !

Sik,—A crowd of drunken roughs took full possession in the vicinity of Prince of Wales College from daybreak this morning until several heurs afterward. The fouleet and most insulting language was showered upon as by. who had to grin and bear it. If at east one of our Police would deign to favor the residents of that section with an occasional visit, much unseemly and disgraceful conduct might he prevented. The Police Station is priccipally for the temporary continement of lawless characters, not the permanent dwell- ing of the Force, One Policeman in chorge of the building is amply sufficient ; the balance should be out doing th:ir duty.

PHe COLONIAL AND INDIAN EXHIBITION to be heid in LONDON, England, commenc- ing MAY Ist, 1886, is intended to be on a scale of

great magnitude, having tor object to mark an epoch in the relations of all tue parts of the British Empire with each oiher.

In order to give becoming significance to the

event, a Royal Commission is issued for the hold- ing of this Lxhibition for ‘he first time since 1862 ; and His noyal Highness the Prince of Wales has been appointed President by Her Majesty.

The very large space of 51,000 square feet has been alloted tothe Dominion of Canada by cor- mand of the President, His Royal Highness.

ihis Exhibition is to be purely Volonial and Indian, and no competition from the United Kingdom or from foreign nations will be per- mitted, the object being to exhibit to the world at large what the Colonies can do,

‘The grandest opportunity ever offered to Can- ada is thus afforded to show the distinguished place she occupies, by the prowress ahe has made in Agriculture, in Horticulture, in the Induscrial and Fine Arts,in the Manufacturing Industries, in the Newest Improvements in Manufacturing Machinery, and Implements, in Public Works by Mode!s and Designs; also in an adequate display of her vast resources in the Fisheries, and in Forest and Siinera) wealth, and also in Shipping,

All Canadians of ail parties and classes are if- vited to come fo:ward and vie with each other in endeavoring on this great occasion to put Canada in her true piace as the premier colony of the British Empire, and to establish her proper posi- tion before the world. ;
