The minutes were read and ap- proved. Eighteen members answer- so roll call. The school committee reported the teacher needed two books, and Mrs. Dunning offered to get some.

Plans were made for a Haliowe'- en party to be held in the hall. The secretary was asked to send to the Red Cross for Cod Liver Oil pills. A donation to the Cancer society was acknowledged.

How would you like to spend a mtht at Bp00k.s' Nook? There is a hotel by that name 39 miles off the Richardson Highway leading to the ghost town of Chitina, Alaska.

Boat tourists years ago could land in Cardova, visit Chitins by rail. leave by bus and rejoin their boats at Valdez, terminus of the Richardson Highway.

Gone is the railroad that used to carry copper from the Kennecott mines to the refinery and shipping port of Cardova. Gone too, are the other hotels and most of the business places and dwellings of this once thriving town of Chitlna.

Like so many other mining centers chitlna has become a Ghost town and the man who run; the post office. drug store, hotel. and what's left of Ch:ltina's former glory. 0. A Nelson. decided the place should live up to its name.

That's about the time Nelson took down the sign Commercial Hotel and replaced it with spooks” -Nook. Another eerie sign tacked to 3. pair of posts near the termlnous or the Egertcm cutoff road. reads; "Chitlna. Beware the ghosts."

Today Chltins. has a population of seventeen whites, mostly prospec- tors, trappers and road men. and some 80 members of the Copper River Irldians occupy a village on its outskirts.

Chitina's leading citizen. the s- mazing O. A. Nelson. is making the spooky little town pav off in a big Wlay by playing up the spooky an- g e.

The general store has an annual turnover of between 385,000 and 3100.000; goods are trucked or flown in every month of the year. The 19-room hotel is always full of guests, "Writers, travellers, adven- turers and what have you. Mr. Nelson provided the little ghost town with its own hydroelectric nlant back in 1917. It's capacity of 20 k. hours takes care of all elec- trical needs.

The Spock's Nook boasts hot and cold water and flush toilets. thanks to Mr. Nelson who designed a. uni- que municipal water system by Dlping the water from an out of town reservoir holding a few thou. sand gallons. From there it is piped to an old locomotive boiler to be heated and returned to the reser-
