Every young man who has passed that important and critical stage of his life when the choice of a profession was mide, well knows with what hesitation and general disquietude it was attended. He can recall how often the pros and cons were weighed and the possibilities calculated with reference to each of the learned pro- fessiona, and how often one was dismissed in favor of ancther. Nor was this unrest at all lessened by the thuught of leaving home and undergoing an examination amid strange surroundings— poasibly before he has recovered from the fatigue of a long jovrney, and in many cases weighed down with a sense of Joaeliness, As a couse- quence of these unfavorable circumstances failure is often the result, and the expense and worry of a journey have been borne for nothing. The corporation of McGill University, in view ot (Lese chances, has

living at a distance who desire to enter any of her faculties, by holding a matriculation examination at various local centres throughout the Dominion in the month of June m each year. The result of this ex- amination will be made known in thiee - weeks from the date thereof. The advan- tages are apparent. The examination may be taken wih less expense, and under com paratively favorabie circumstances, and if he fail the candidate has the opportunity of working up the subjects in which he was wanting, and taking the examination again at the commencement of the session. If he pass there is a sense of relief, and he can prepare forthe regular work of the seesion months in advance

The Nineteenth Century contains an article on ‘*The Lstest Electrical Dis- covery,” which explains the latest theories in the science, and places betore the reader the interesting fact that we are standing upon the threshold of an age of wonderful iovention. An article on ** The Partisans of the Wild Women" should be carefuily read by all woman's rights enthusiasts, **The Muslim Hell,” 8 long article, re- counts many curious ‘traditions that we can only look upon ag traditions, but which, nevertheless, are well worth reading. One of the most readable contributivns is by Archibald Forbes, on ** Napoleon III]. at Sedan.” Many other subjects furnish ex- cellent reading.

The Westminster Review contains able articles on ** The Great Civil War in Eng- land,” by M W. Whaelpston; on ** The Platform,” by Right Hunorable G@ Osborne Morgan; on ** Vivisection” ; ‘* The Logic of a Despot’s Advucate,”” which deals with the Czar, and other leading topics of the day are treated of.
