VATICAN CITY (AP) — Augustin Bea, the cardinal with a dream of Christian unity. now is in his 84th year but still works actively for a goal he believes is beyond his lifetime.

Head of the Vatican's Secre- tariat for Promoting Christian Unity. the German cardinal has made such an impact on the ecumenical or unity movement that many regard him as Ro- man Catholicism’s leading per- sonality next to the Rope.

"I’m neither an optimist nor I. pessimist," he has said many times. “Rather I am a realist. and I trust in God. Everybody who knows the situation realizes that the difficulties are tremen dous. . . . “0n the way to union. moun- tains of obstacles still arise. We need a faith that can move mountains. and a charity to match that faith."

Pope John XXIII created the unity secretariat in 1960 and asked Cardinal Bea to direct it Before then the cardinal had won distinction in a church ca- reer touching on many intellec- tual areas.

Baptist and Presbyterian churches.

He first studied theology at the University of Freiburg. His father was unhappy to learn the boy wanted to become a priest. He had hoped his son would carry 0 the Bea construction business and small farm.

He studied at the universities of Innsbruck, Valkenburg and Berlin. When he was finished he had earned two doctoral de- grees.

In 1012. at the age of 81. he was ordained a Jesuit priest. He rose steadily in the order and in 1930 was appointed rector oi the pontlfical biblical institute. a post he held for the next 19

years.

Father Bea's pioneering of new method and standards in Catholic biblical research reached a high point in 1943. 01-- ficial papal recognition came then with Pius' encyclieal letter "divino afflante spir‘tu." It gave impetus to modern bib-

.llcal criticism. and Bea’a own theories formed the core of the

papal document.

The Jesuit scholar engineered new translations of the scrip- tures that were considered rev- olutionary. lie also had a hand in papal documents reforming theological study courses.

Within a year of Pope John's coronation, Father Bea was called to be a prince of his church in November, 1959. at ready 13 years past the retire- ment age of most men. He is the only Jesuit among the 78 cardinals.

Pope John named him to head a new Christian unity secretar~ lat on June 5, 1960.

Christian unity has become a major long-range goal of the Vatican ecumenical c o u n c i 1. along with the immediate goal of reforming and renewing the Roman Catholic Church. ar- dinal Ben’s secretariat has be- come a permanent agency that will continue when the council ends. '
