The speaker described the form- ation of the com ny-in December 1941 when Carl Burke and Joe An- derson conceived the idea while ferrying bombers across the Atlan- tic. Mr. Anderson was unfortun- ately killed in one of these cross- ings, Mr. Burke carried on with the project alone. 14 personnel were employed the first you and 9,000 passengers were carried 217.000 miles on the Charlottetown, Mone- ton, St. John run.

The graphic stories of Jimmy Wade and can Burke were told by Mr. Gaudet who described how the former tried to rescue a crew of United States airmen from the ice cap in Greenland. Although his attempt was not successful. the aircraft he was using was lost. The Government of the United stem rsplaced.the lost aircraft with a twin engine Lockheed.

In.Janua.ry. .1943, Capt. Burke rescued four airmen who were sis-ended on an ice fioe 20 miles out in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. mak- ing four tripe and almost impossible landings, carrying one man at a time to safety.

Charter Traffic

In 1945 M. C. A. went into the charter business when they purch- ased three Douglas C3's, enabling them to carry 14, lbs. of express and freight. Passenger figures this year stood at 20.000 carried.

From 1948 to the present time the company has made rapid strides in air navigation from every aspect. Planes of the M.C.A. have flown over every Province of Canada. and practically every State in the U.- S. A. 47.000 passengers were carried last year, three miilioz. pounds of

C goods and 517,000 lbs. of mail.

The six months of this year in- dicate even greater expainsion as the figures in every department al- ready exceeds that of 1051.

The panenger business. which started in a modest way when the M. C. A. began operations. has had to give place to charter operations as a carrier and earning proposi- tion, which has required move- ments of goods far into the North

borne traffic throughout Canada. giving place only to Trans-Canada and the Canadian Pacific Compan- ies in this respect.

Large Staff Employed

A staff of 450 and 50 pilots are required to keep-the ships in the air. 250 men are employed in Char- lottetown for the maint ance of R. C. A. F. aircraft uncle contract from the Federal Governnicnt. This plant turns out an average of 3 to 4 aircraft each week and is a boom to Charlottetown.

.The largest part of operations are carried on from Moncton where most of the charter work origin:-tes. Three-quarters of the company pilots are based there in order to carry goods coming into that port from the U. 8. A. and Upper Can- ada into the Labrador area and as far north as the Arctic circle. The longest trip taken quite regularly is 1.000 miles north of Goose Bay. In conclusion nor. Gaudet stress- ed what he described as "the Mari- time.spirit that "X" factor which has partially accounted for much of the success and expansion of the M. C. A. "I feel", he said. "that this spirit is the ability to improvise. to go ahead and get thngs done in a commonsense way. it is the,spirit of success".

Little Theatre- liuild Meeting

At a Little Theatre Guild exe- cutive meeting held last hi hi emphasis was placed on the urg nt need for more active members in the Guild. A large active member- ship would greatly reduce the dif- ficultles of the Play "coding and Casting Committees because these Committees are limited in their ef- forts to provide worthwhile plays by two small a number of actors, directors. and stage workers.

It was announced that the Play Reading Committee together with members interested in direcing plays this season will meet at the home of Miss Mary Moran on Thursday evening for the purpose of planning an evening of three one-act plays for a. Studio Night in November. Try-outs are sched- uled for the near future to cast the plays chosen.

Theg opening play of the season Pig in s. Poke, which has been in production for some time will be presented the latter part of this month.

The Liberal victories followed a series of Liberal reverses in both the federal and provincial fields. However, sources close to the gov- ernment and to the affairs of the Liberal Party said the victories are not likely to have any bearing on the date of the next general elec- tion.

Most observers are predicting that the election will come in the fall of 1953. The life of the present par- liament, elected in 1949, does not expire until Aug. 25. 1954.

The Liberal sources said that the

Halifax Symphonuette. an en- semble from the Halifax Sym- phony Orchesirs. Featured us

piano soloist with this fine group of musicians was Mr. Howard Brown, of the Mount Allison Con- servatory of Music. The ensemble was conducted by Mr. Alfred Strombergs, with Mr. Julius Sli- vermsn as concert-master.

The programme ranged from classical to modern music. and every number was interpreted with rare sensitivity and co-ordln- ation. These qualities were notice- able from the start in the suite for strings. by Henry Purcell, the 17th century composer who was organist at Westminster Abbey in his later years and still ranks as the greatest of English music writers.

Each was featured prominently on the programme; not the great Johann Sebastian, but his elev- enth son. John Christian Bach. who spent the last twenty years of his life in England and whose Concerts in A Major for piano. played last evening with Mr. Brown as soloist, was heard for the first time by many in the audience. The opening allegro movement of this work is espec- ially pleasing, and the whole com-

"Air Celeste." by the same com- poser. was followed by ihe well- known Intermezzo and Nocturne from Mendeisaohn's incidental music to Shakespearer's "Mid- summer Night's Dream."

The second half of the program- me fesiured Mr. Brown as soloist in a remarkably fine setting by C. Armstrong Gibbs of three of Walter de la Marc's poems in "Peacock Pie.” "The Sunken Gar- den" in this suite is truly en- chanting music, and the orchestra scored an outstanding success in the skill and delicacy of its in- terpretatlon.

Carp. Ont., Oct. 6 - (CP)' - Near this Eastern Ontario town is a sight that would have gladdened the heart of Scotland's poet-plow- man, Robert Burns.

It is a city of 500 tents beside which hundreds of countrymen this week will combine a four-day out- ing in the best rural tradition with a dead-serious competition for the title of top plowman in the land. The intemationai plowing matches get under way here to- morrow and the things that make for good plowing have been pre- served-a strong back, a true eye and a firm hand.

From Quebec and Ontario. eight states of, the United states and Britain will come plowmen, expert and otherwise, to turn furrows on 18 farms ringing the airport here where the tent city has been built.
