A Desperate Fight with Rats.

A German named Grossman keeps a lager beer saloon in Franklin, Penn. Twe of his children were sent into the cellar to get some Swiss cheese, which was stored in a vault formerly used by a brewer. An army of rats disputed their passage, and while the elder of tu children fought the other returned to the saloon and screamed for assistance, saying that his brother was in the cellar surronnded by rats. . Mr. Gross- man and two neighbors armed themselves with clnbs and hastened to the rescue of the boy. The sight that met their eyes as they entered the vault was one such as they had never befere witnessed. The army of rats seemed to number thousands. The men turned in the contest, but so numerous and persi:tent were the rats that they were mere than an hourin conquering them. Dead rats were piled on every side, and their number was so greatly reduced that the survivors were driven to their holes. Hight hundred and nineteen dead rats were car-

A Detective Story.

There is a story told of a lady and gen- tleman travelling together on an English railroad. They were strangers to each other. Suddenly, the gentleman said > —
