A second meeting was held Oa Monday, which was attended by a very large and enthusiastic audience. SurewaL,—A correspondent of the Ad- vertizer, residing at Eist Point, remarks that, ‘On looking over the Examinar, dated Oct. 10th, I noticed an extract from the St.John Telegraph, headed, ‘daring and successful surgical operation,’ in which it is stated that Dr. Balcom, assisted by Dr. Vinnor, performed a very difficult sur- gical operation. Dr. Balcom claims that it it is the first operation of the kind ever performed in the Provinces. Now, as a lover of justice, I must say that quite as wonderful and as successful an operation of the same kind was performed eight years ago by Dr. McTutyre, of Souris, P E. I. He, in the second year of: bis prac- tice, unassisted, operated on a young man named Mclsaac, of Rock Barra, who was at the point of death. He first opened his body between the fifth and sixth rib and inserted a silver tube, and afterwards, find. ing the matter getting low, he opened beneath the shoulder blade, taking from time to time, several quarts of matter, and finally restored him to perfect health, to the surprise of all who sawhim. As the Dr. is not in the habit of sounding bis own success, there was no notice taken of the affair in the Island papers at the time;

but as one of his friends I do not like to!

Bank. ‘ {f there is such an official as a Street Over- seer or City Engineer, ha should be at his postand direct the proper laying of the crossings. ‘The portion of the croesing re- ferred to—crossing the gutter—is laid ens urely too low. The result will be, that at times of heavy rain,the water will be either altogether stopped or turned out of the gus- ter into the street. The crossing should be nearly, if not aliogether, as bigh across BoOK & JOB the gutter as at the crown of the street.

Again, the crossing from the Broadway uouse to the P. E. Island Bank, has ex- { actly the opposite defect to the one allud«

Sir,—I have just been reading your cri- ticism of the Concert of Wednesday even- ing, and, asa member of the Orchestral | ————-——-———-__—___-_—__ C.ub, ladmit the truth of your remarks upon our part of the performance; and, at the same time, thank you forthem. There are, however, a few points in excuse that 1 wish to bring before your notice. In the tirst place you speak of an appearance of slovenliness in the stage arrangements. Now | would merely say in regard to this matter that if we have acted in the manner you describe, of course we did s0 in a general wish not to make too great a con- trast to the disgusting and badiy arranged barn of a room which your ‘‘good humored and indulgent citizens’ have kindly placed at our disposal. As to the tuning of the instruments, | may say that it is almost impossible to have them correct, for they have to be tuned in a little hole ofa room that has four and twenty ice draughts, being ventilated by broken window panes. The consequence of this is thatthe tones will slightly alter when tue instruments are brought into the hot air of the stage.

The intended hospital should staud upon a foundation of charity ; but, unfortunately, this material is rather hard of quarrying in P. E. Island.

it would be a pleasure to everyone to see both the music hall and hospital started this winter. Building material is cheap now; an‘l many a carpenter and Stone- mason ill be wanting employment next summer. During the winter Months, when our merchants have a little leisure, they should turn over these matters and lay them on a yellow carpet.
