Some merchants expect from the one-eightn drop went into force on the lst inst. atempting to f recast the future with a propheticeye, we would te surprised if these expectations are al! fulfilled.

Supposing the duty on a line of goods is 30 per cent. Oue-eighth off that leaves the duty at 26} percent, and the drop is only on British goods. Of course, it prices abroad were stationary, we might expect to get the benefit of the drop in duty which,in the particular case we have cited, applies. Butthe question of price is a large one, and *everal things besides the rate of duty in Canada affect it. For example, if, ai we hear, the English prices for certain lines of dress goods have gone up, We do not suppose for a moment that our lower duty can check the correspond - ing advance in this market. That, at least, is our opinion, based upon inyjuiry and past experience.

No one denies that the preference of } of the duty is a very substantial concession to British goods. Tizy will come into Canada in much larger quantities, But,

in a large measure, this will mean not so | much a decrease in price asa crowding |

out of foreign goola—French, German and United States, which will be displaced by British manufacturers. The British merchant's advantage is real But we doubt if the Canadian consumer is going to getmuch. He will simply buy an English cotton instead of an American,a Bradford serge instead of a French serge, and so on. It was never intended toc sure a crash of price in Canada by the new tariff. Its purpose mainly was to gives decided preference to British goods, and, on August 1, when the Imperial Treaties are got rid of, the British merchant will enjoy what was offered to him.

It should slao be kept in view that when the tariff was readjusted, in April, 1897, provision was made for the decrease io duty by raising the rate on a large number of staple lines. This, in some lines, ac- tually left the duty higher, or a mere shade lower, than before. Consequently, the market was prepared for the two- eighths reductions, one of which went into force in April, 1897, and the other on the firet of the current month. Besides, the reduction applies ooly to British im- porte, the duties being actually increased on foreign imports to the old figures.

Por the reasons giver, therefore, we hope our importing merchants, whether wholesale or retail, will not let the con- suming public imagine that they are go- ing to get everything surprisingly cheap because the duty, since July 1, bas been lower than it was before.

It ia the same ledye of gold bearing quartz tha: runs through them all.

You people “back East” have no idea of the rapidity with which a mining camp grows. When Il arrived here on April 12th of this year there were only a dozen small houses and about 60 tents; but now the tents bave disappeared and given place to sulstantial stores and residences. At that time lumber was only $60 per thousand fm. You can procure anything youwant here now, except fruits and vegetables, these latter being very scarce, having to be hauled from 50 to 85 miles by pack train over the mountains. Republic can boast of two good news- papers, published weekly.

The Inland Telephone and Telegraph Co. with which the writer is connected, have a good exchange here, comprising most of the business houses and hotels. There is a good post office, express office, bank and

a fine schoolhouse. There are two churches under construction. In the meantime religious services ure held in

in which & mining town differs from the staid old towns back East. For

Witbin the last fortnight the camp has suffered a heavy exodus ot miners and pro- spectors who have gone to the newly opened south half of the Colville reserva- tion. There were at least 2000 men wait- ing On the boundary forthe news from Washiogton of the passing of the bill, and when icat last arrived there was a great rush for locations.Some of the prospects located down here last week ranged as high as 10,434 io gold pertonof quartz. This wiil be a good country when the war is Over as capital is rather slow in coming in and mines out here cannot be worked without large capital.
