How. Mr. Caapveau reports the prospects for a successful campaign in the Province of Quebec as very promising, and_ would not be surprised if from eight to ten Government supporters were returned by acclamation. The Government will probably elect from forty to forty-five. members, which Mr. Chapleau thinks is not a high estimate.

At the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court to- day, the case of a truckman, charged with overloading his team, was postponed _ till to-morrow, and that of a woman for violating the Scott Act, was adjourned till Monday. The young man charged with obtaining goods under false pretences was sent up for trial in the Supreme Court, and an assault case was dismissed.

A LARGELY-aTTENDED meeting of the Com- missioners for managing the approaching Pro- vincial Exhibition, was held in the Law Courts Building this forenoon, when judges for the different classes were appointed and other business of importance transacted. Re- ports received from the various sections of the Island were to the effect that the harvest was good, and that the grains, etc., shown at the Exhibition would be excellent.

On Friday last, a butcher occupying a stall in the inside market, had a dispute with Clerk VanIderstine, as to what con- stituted a breach of the regulations,. governing the Market. The dispute arose from the fact that an outside butcher had sold a quarter of meat to a customer, and that, for the conven } ience of the purchaser, the meat had been cut up by an inside butcher. This, the butcher who had the dispute objected toon the ground that it was a breach of the market rules, and he undertook to give the offending butcher a piece of his mind. The Clerk came to the as- sistance of the outside butcher, and suggested that it would be advisable for the inside man to keep quiet. His advice was not accepted, and the complaining butcher started in on the Clerk. Both got vexed, and the argument ended in the Clerk being assaulted. An ac- tion for assauli was brought against the

THE “ADAMS. CASE.”

Some Preliminary Sparring.

Hatrrax, Sept. 17.

The formal trial of the Gloucester schr. David J. Adams, for violating the treaty of 1818 by purchasing bait in Digby harbor, commenced this afternoon. The only per- sons present were lawyers Graham and Borden for the crown, and Meagher for the United States defence, and the crown wit- nesses. Immediately after the court was constituted, Mr. Meagher called attention to the presence of reporters, and said the publication of the evidence of the crown witnesses was calculated to prejudice the defence. He therefore hoped they would not remain. He argued that this was not a private court but a_ private arrangement for the examination of wit- nesses by consent. The commissioner said he did not think he had the power to exclude representatives of the press, but didn’t think they ought to remain after being requested to withdraw.

Mr. Meagher here requested all witnesses to retire, except the one to be. examined. Mr. Graham said he didn’t agree that they should go out asa matter of right. Mr. Meagher next demanded the Commissioners

ruling about excluding the reporters. ' The |Commissioner ruled that unless Mr.

Meagher could'show him that he had au- thority to do so, he would not assume that responsibility. The reporters’ therefore re- mained.

Mr. Meagher cross-examined the first witness at length, but failed to shakejhis tes timony in any particular.

Capt.'Dakin, the next witness, substan- tiated many of the main peints of the pre- vious witness's testimony. He made a per- sonal inspection of the bait found on the Adams, and declared it to have been fresh and not out of the water many hours.

The case. was adjourned till to-morrow, when Admiral Scott will be put on the stand.

Terrible Storm—Loss of Life and Property.

Cuicaco, Sept. 16. - Severe wind and rain-storms prevailed this afternoon.’ "The town ‘of’ Montezuma, Illinois, is reported to have been partly

destroyed and a number of lives lost. The damage is placed at $45,000. In the

Wabash Valley the loss is estimated at $80,- 000, Indianapolis and Michigan city (Ind.) suffered. In Lowell, Mich., one man was killed and much. property destroyed.

Fatal Railway Accident,

Burrato, N. Y., Sept. 16.

The list of killed im the Nickle Plate collision pitch amounts to 19. It is now supposed to be complete. The responsi- bility for the disaster has been settled and it rests with Engineer Brewer and Con- ductor Donaldson of the passenger train who disobeyed the orders of the despatcher.
